Danger De Lux shows you how to: make all natural surf spray

As you may recall I am now trying to use only chemical free products, which means getting to make a handful of the cosmetics I use or want to use. I poured out all my old potions and lotions and kept and cleaned the bottles for future use. One of the products I made was a sea salt surf spray for my hair, which gives your hair a wavy, tousled look, like you just spent the day at the beach or frolicking in the ocean. My hair is kind of naturally wavy, but the bottom layer usually stays straighter because it is heavier. I like to use this surf spray to give my hair some extra wave, that looks natural and fun.

10917863_856250674441629_3090335772021083305_nYou can buy surf sprays from places like Lush and the Body Shop. Most bigger brands have started making them as well. All of these companies add extra chemicals they aren’t needed. The main acting ingredient is salt, that is what is making the waves in your hair. So why not just make your own, which you know is chemical free and costs next to nothing. You can buy a 100ml Sea Spray from Lush for $13 which contains harmful ingredients like PVP, methylparaben, and fragrance. Bumble and Bumble make a surf spray that you can get for $18-$30, which contains:

“Water Magnesium Sulfate, Macrocystis Pyrifera (Kelp) Extract, Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract, Isoceteth-20, Citric Acid, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Citronellol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Linalool, Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Fragrance (Parfum). “

in other words, a ton of chemicals.

So why buy one full of chemicals when you can make your own for less than a dollar and in under 5 minutes?

Here is what you will need

KENDAL + BEACH SPRAY 006

A spray bottle ( I reused an old product bottle)

Sea Salt ( and a grinder),

Any essential oil that you like the scent of ( I used lavender)

Water

Measuring spoons and maybe a funnel

And here is how you make it

surfspray1. pour ground sea salt in the bottle – I used half a teaspoon

2. add water – you can do it right out of the tap or use a funnel like I did

3. add 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil – this will give your hair a slight scent, so make sure you like it

4. Shake it up and try it out!

You can use this on dry or damp hair, in the morning or before bed, anytime really! And you can feel good knowing if its 100% chemical free!

Going chemical and cruelty free really isn’t that hard – you just need to look harder, be more creative, and read the ingredient labels or know the symbols to look for. Or in this case, make it yourself.

I love using this sea spray, especially because my hair doesn’t hold a curl very well and I have only just begun pin curling it. But if I don’t have time or am going to the gym in the morning, Ill use this sea spray for added texture and wave
