the end of a decade

At the end of the month I’m turning….30! Good golly! I have no idea where the time went! I am planning a mega fun and kitchy party to celebrate…I am hoping I remember to take photos to share! I am throwing a 60s mod party, complete with fondue, and punch, and silly games!

7153437_f520I was having trouble deciding just what to do. Originally i was hoping to head down to Vegas, but it is really not feasible with this silly economy of ours! So I hoed and hummed over just what to do… And I finally decided that something fun and colourful and bright. I always dress in 50s style clothing and wanted to stick to something close to what I usually wear, but more playful and less constricting. Plus my apartment is more comfy than classy, so sassy cocktail dresses just didn’t seem right

tumblr_lxmnl8g5sL1qhfsodo1_1280A friend of mine, who is a designer, is going to make me a little mod dress…but that deserves a whole post for its self, so no more on that until later!

I am a little sad to be leaving my 20s behind, especially since I didn’t quite get everything done that I was hoping to by now, but I am looking forward to the year, in which I plan to do many- a great things!

I am so looking forward to a weekend off work full of frivolities, pretty dresses, cocktails, cake, and giggles!

danger de lux: where i’ve been

I’m sure you have noticed the crickets chirping around here lately, perhaps you’ve seen a tumbleweed or two? I would love to say I’ve been off having the time of my life and thus just have not had time to write, but that’s not why it’s been so quite around here. The truth is I’ve changed jobs….AGAIN! And this time around, I have been busy with work…I am always busy with work, but its different this time. I work 6 days a week and sometimes pick up extra shifts at ol’ Rowena if I can, which means, working 14-16 days in a row, which is fine, it’s what I am use to. My new job however is in the corporate retail world…don’t judge…and it is draining! Plus I am struggling with the fact that I am back in the mall….right where I started 12 years ago.

The company I work far is great thus far…it’s a small big box store, which means, you are not just a number. But alas, I do not get to dress nice at work….something I have been missing since the summer. It is a casual clothing store, which means leggings, hoodies, converse, etc. This is fine every now and again, but I am back to where I was at the gym….just not feeling myself.

safe_image.php

My lack of personal identity and the draining, soul sucking environment that is retail, in the mall, at the holidays, has gotten me feeling blue. Stick on top of that my moral hate for the mall and over consumption of fast fashion goods, and you best believe  I have been feeling unmotivated to blog. But, it pays the bills…and that is what is important, right….? If you could see me right now, you would notice I am shaking my head “no” as I write.

8048da528c90a09ed8e7976dcff0fea6But every morning, I pull on my big girl pants and make the best of it, because everything is temporary and I know there is a lot I can learn from  my new job, which may come in handy one day, if I ever get around to opening my own store ( a very far fetched dream)

I hope to make more time to blog and have some post ideas ready to go, so here’s to the new year, full of new experiences and new opportunities! This year I am hoping to do more photoshoots ( photographers, Im looking at you), take some time to relax ( vegas, anyone?), reach my fitness goals ( buns of steel, here I come), and really grow my blog into what I know it can be!

Don’t stray too far cats and kittens, because I promise ( i mean it this time) I have more posts coming up real soon!

xoxo

Saying Goodbye…

I’m sure most of you know that for the past three years I have  been working at one of the top rockabilly and pinup shops in Canada (and arguably  North America) and for the last 2 of those years I have been the manager, putting my heart and soul into Rowena. If you follow my Facebook  page you would have seen  my posts about how I was leaving and to come say goodbye. After three long years, it was time to move on. So with a lot of excitement and a little sadness, I am saying goodbye to Rowena, my home for the past three years. I graduated from school about a year ago and have found a potentially amazing job in my field. I’ve traded in my novelty print skirts, leopard print, and tight, low cut tops for running shoes, yoga pants, sports bras, and racer back tops. I am now the studio manager at a fitness studio, where I will also do private training and instruct group fitness  classes. It’s  a very different world from the pinup, rockabilly life I lead, but health and fitness are my passion in life. I am excited to start a new chapter in life but wanted to say goodbye to what has been my life for the past three years. While I knew I wouldn’t work at Rowena forever and there was very little growing left for me to do there, it was still sad to say  I was leaving. If you’ve been to the brick and mortar shop you know that it has gone through a lot of visual changes, which I worked very hard on. I’ve also met some amazing people there and made a few friends out of my favorite customers  (you know who you are ).

Not only do I love helping pretty gals find pretty dresses, I love helping myself  find pretty dresses 😉 I will definitely miss trying on all the fun new dresses and being the first to see it all. I’ll miss having the first pick, having an amazing wardrobe and the killer discount.

Ill miss my lovely coworkers who made the slow days and tedious tasks fun and silly.

10930941_10153044938117790_576738279206358002_nI’ve had some really great times at Rowena…and of course, there has been drama, we are just a bunch of girls after all 😉 There has been fun times, annoying customer times, tearful times, creepy dude and stalker times, and absolutely everything in between.

I’ve done a lot of growing while at Rowena. Ive loved being recognized as the girl who works at Rowena. Ive loved helping young girls find an outfit that makes them feel like a beautiful princess. I’ve loved playing dress-up with gals and having fun and giggling and making friends with them.

It was a fun job where I was able to develop a lot of my retail and merchandising skills but it was time to move on. I’ll miss making fun window displays; Ill miss dressing the mannequins; Ill miss making fun store displays; Ill miss putting together fun outfit; Ill miss impromptu cupcakes, photo shoots, and weekend re-caps. Thank you Rowena and associates for the lovely three years. Its been a blast!! I’ll be seeing you around!

Danger De Lux goes all natural

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have noticed lately I have been posting about natural cosmetics…face wash, feminine products, shampoo, toothpaste, perfume…. It is all because I read a book I had heard about years ago. I saw it in the Library last month and figured I may as well read it ( I love to read, btw). The book that has changed every thing for me was There is Lead in Your Lipstick by Gillian Deacon… Now I know it sounds silly to say one book has changed my whole perspective on makeup and toiletries, but it completely opened my eyes to how much chemicals are in our beauty products and how most companies are lying to us about the ingredients they are using.

lipstick-coverCompanies are allowed to say they are all natural or use natural ingredients even if they arn’t or don’t. Cosmetic companies are allowed to use ingredients that cause cancer and illness and sometimes don’t even list this ingredients. There is some special loop hole that a product with a scent can simply list perfume or fragrance, as it is the brands ” secret scent”….one which is usually laden with chemicals. It’s a shame because so many people believe companies when they say they are natural or organic, when most of the time its a lie, or perhaps one or two ingredients are natural. I think it is important to know what you are putting on your body and essentially in your body as your skin absorbs all those chemicals.

cosmetics-inline-5Some of the most common chemicals in cosmetics include SLS, parabens, phthalates, tar, formaldehyde, and well, I could go on. In the very basic form of it, these toxins cause cancer, hormone disruption, damage to vital organs such as the liver, etc. It’s really scary when you think about it… How many chemicals are you using every day? Gillian Deacon states that the average women uses/applies 126 chemicals before leaving the house each day. I am not okay with this and that is why I am changing my entire beauty and body care regime. I poured out most of my old chemical filled products and have replaced them with homemade ones or truly 100% natural, chemical free ones.

dangers_of_lipstick_heavy_metalsThe cosmetics industry is not required to prove an ingredient is safe for human health before it is used in a consumer producthttp://www.gilldeacon.ca/projects-lipstick.php

I have switched about half or more of my products over to 100% natural, and while yes, some are more expensive ( like deodorant and toothpaste)  I have found some great deals and quality products at great prices. Thus far I have been shopping at Planet Organic ( my local organic grocery store) and Well.ca. Planet Organic carries essential oils and all the ingredients to make my own products- and they often have products on sale or offer 10% customer appreciation days. Well.ca offers free shipping on orders over $25 and are always having sales. I have found great products at both of these places without breaking the bank. All the products are also Cruelty Free, which is something I think is very important- no animals should have to suffer for our vanity…ever!

lead-in-lipstickI highly recommend you all read There’s Lead in Your Lipstick by G. Deacon and really think about what you are putting on and in your body. Keep an eye out for more posts on specific products and beauty rituals- shampoo and hair washing. nail polish. feminine products. getting a pinup look with all natural makeup. perfume…oh goodness how I love perfume!

November Detox

Inspired from other gals Ive seen have month long goals or no-no lists, Ive decided to make November my month to detox. My detox includes my diet, my wallet, and physical activity. I have a trip to Vegas planned in December and it’s Christmas ( which also means boxing day!); November will be my prep month to save money and create more healthy habits.

DETOXMy November Detox looks like this

Say No To:

  • soda – i love myself a can of coke every once and while but this  month I hope to kick the habit all together
    • sweets and processed junk- when I am not prepared for the day or need to get groceries, I find myself making bad choices, but not this month!
    • energy drinks- boy do I love energy drinks, but they are burning a hole in my pocket and probably in my organs too!
    • frivolous spending- I’ve set a budget for myself and plan to stick to it. I work at the mecca of all pinup and rockabilly clothing, so there was no reasonable way I could not spend any money, so a budget will help keep my spending in check

CocaColaPostermars_3spoonsSay Yes To:

  • getting up early and going to bed early- I usually do, but iD like to get up even early to increase productivity
  • going to yoga- 1-2 per week. yoga clears my find and makes my body feel oh so good
  • save money- crossing my fingers I can save at least $500
  • workout- okay, I already workout quite a bit, but I want to make a more regular schedule.
  • work more- I’m hoping to find a second job asap!

fb0a85382aad0961192a7aee2f8dbd06Well, that’s it! My November Detox list. I have high hopes I will stick to my detox and have a healthy happy month…and maybe be a little richer at the end of it!

If you want to do the detox with me, head over to my facebook page and tell me your detox list

whats in your makeup bag: danger de lux

I have a fun new series for all you Kittens- whats in your makeup bag?! Well, it is exactly what it sounds like, featuring the gals from Rowena, fellow bloggers, and, fingers crossed, some of your favorite pin-ups.

To start things off, I’m going to share my makeup bag and my most favorite products. I have recently switched out a few products and am working on switching out more, as I am trying my darnedest to only use cruelty free products.

This is me in my every day makeup, with my best friend, Cherry ( she doesn’t need any makeup, she’s a natural beauty)

And here is what is in my makeup bag

MAKEUP KIT 010Makeup Bag by Fluff

Too Faced Chocolate Bar eye shadow palette

Sephora In the Heat Moonshadow baked palette,

Makeup Forever Brow Seal

Anastasia Eye Brow Pencil and Brow Powder Duo in Auburn

Gosh Velvet Touch Eyeliner in Black Ink

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper

Sephora Illuminator in Light Beam

Bare Essentials Foundation

Eco Tools Kabuki Brush

lipstick 001And my favorite red lipsticks

Mac Ruby Woo

Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hour Lipstick in Continuous Cranberry

Beseme in Red Velvet

Makeup Forever Aqua Lipliner in 8C

These are all the products I use on a daily basis, as well as if I do a photo shoot ( I just spend a lot more time and detail on my makeup if it is for something other than every day). I use two eyeliners to do my wing tip- the gosh pencil for across my lid, and the Kat Von D liquid liner for the ‘flick’; I’ve found this works best for me to get the look I like. I usually use a variety of shades of brown, as I find brown goes best with my skin tone, eyes, and hair colour. I didn’t show a mascara as I don’t have a favorite- I often use something from Maybelline, or try something new from Sephora when I run out of what I am using. Maybe if you have a favorite mascara, you can leave it in the comments for me to try out. I just switched my eyebrow products from MAC to Anastasia, as MAC now tests on animals, which makes me sad, but Anastasia is cruelty free. I also use a bronzer every day, because I love how it looks with my freckles – I didnt show it, because I need a new one right now, but I usually use one from Rimmel; you have to use caution with bronzer though, as its not for everyone.

I hope you enjoyed seeing what is in my makeup bag and enjoy the rest to come!

Before I turn 30: a list, revisited

I just recently found a list I had made in 2011 of some  things to do before I turned 30. At that time I was 25, I am now 28. Its not an extensive list and some of things are quite ambitious….lets see what Ive gotten done so far.

Here is the list

1. Get another tattoo
2. Go to Japan
3. Go to Greece
4. Go back to school
5. Ride a Ferris Wheel ( really, I haven’t, Im terrified of heights)
6. Pay of my credit card
7. Run a half marathon ( which may eventually turn into a whole marathon)
8. Get published
9. Learn to swing dance ( now, if only I had a partner)
10. Buy an expensive, gorgeous pair of shoes

In the three years since I made this list I have: gotten 2 more tattoos, rode a ferries wheel ( in February at Disneyland), went back to school ( and am 1.5 months away from graduating), paid off my credit card ( and racked it up again)…and thats it. 4 out of 10 things, with 2 years to go! I think this list could use a revision, as I don’t really care about getting published anymore, and I am certain I could add a few things on, like start my own company and move into a new house or apartment. Anyway I thought I’d share this list and see if anyone of you had similar lists.

Also here is me in 2011283504_10150237125735872_6087690_n163115_482323650871_3603314_n

And here is me now, in 2014
