Danger De Lux: all work and no play…

I wanted to write a little post since it has been so quite around here lately…a tumble weed just passed by!! I have so darn busy with work I haven’t had a moment to think! I have been working 9+ hours almost every day and then have to hit the gym after, so you could imagine, I have no energy left for creativity.

BUT! I have a few exciting blog posts in the works! This morning Hello June Photography and I got together for a 60s inspired photo shoot with some gorgeous frocks I borrowed from Swish Vintage, paired with a few pieces of my own.

Hello June shared one of the photos already and I am over the moon! I can not wait to see the rest!

12043049_1734264473477217_5012634156019698588_n

I need to make more time to do the things I truly enjoy doing…getting dolled up, organizing photo shoots, hunting for antiques, being creative, spend time with my gal pals… Right now, Im really just working and going to the gym; I love going to the gym, so no complaints there, but this work thing! haha

I know I have said this before, I am going to make more of an effort to post, even if they are short and sweet. So, stay tuned for some posts coming soon!

Friday Finds: Thrift Store Vintage

Every now and again I find amazing vintage at thrift stores…and not 80s or 90s vintage, but real vintage gold! I was at a small thrift shop about a month ago, not expecting to find much, but my eye caught something glittering among the h&m tunic dresses and beer box t-shirts. It was a gorgeous handmade shift dress…and would you believe it fit me perfectly?! I could not believe my luck! Whomever gave this frock away had no idea the joy it would bring one vintage loving pinup.

_DSC6576e (2)I was even more excited about the price I paid for this lovely dress… $3.50!! Can you believe it?! Goodwill colour codes their items and each week switches which colour is 50% off and it was just my luck that this one was on sale that day.

_DSC6575eHow did I know it was vintage and handmade? First of all, it had a metal zipper, which is a big giveaway. It also did not have a label indicating is was probably handmade. And it had a lot of extra fabric on the inside, to allow for it to be let out if need be; this is something that stopped as mass production become more and more popular. You will never see this kind of extra fabric in clothing nowadays.

_DSC6579e_DSC6578e (2)

Doesn’t it look like it was made for me? It is rare to find a vintage piece that fits so pristine.

I also found a little dress jacket at the vintage shop next to Rowena, called Decadence. And can we check out those amazing Bakelite bangles! Aren’t they divine?!

_DSC6584eIm sure this jacket had a matching dress back in its hay day. Now, its a nice, light, and lovely jacket to pair with an evening dress.

_DSC6581eI feel like a total catalog model in these shots! I love it! So cheesy. But hey, this jacket is just so cute! I paid $12 for this gem and can’t wait to find the perfect occasion to debut it.

_DSC6582eI have more Friday Finds in the works for you lovelies, so stay tuned!!

What was your best vintage dress find?

Laura Byrnes Delia- Your new little black dress

The moment I saw the Delia dress from Laura Byrnes black label, I knew this dress would be divine on and it absolutely did not disappoint.

In my experience lace sleeves can be hard to wear, especially if you have any meat or muscle on your arms. I relieved a sign of joy, when I noticed the lace sleeves on the Delia dress were stretchy! This was even more important when I had to size down from a medium to a small- usually in this case the sleeves simply would not fit and I was slightly resistant that despite the stretch it still would not fit…but to my excitement, the small fit and it fit beautifully.

The Delia is simply stunning. It has all the elements to make it your new favorite little black dress. The rouching on the sides make this bengaline wiggle dress highly flattering, hiding or camouflaging any trouble spots. The Delia also has the coveted sweet heart neckline, which gives this saucy number a touch of sweetness. This dress also has the slightest hint of a princess sleeve, further adding to its elegance.

The fun continues onto the backside, with a keyhole on the upper back and a beautiful kick pleat which is something Pinup Girl is coming known for – no need for a simple slit when you can really punch up a wiggle with gorgeous pleats. The kick pleat is a beautiful selling point when I shown gals these dresses – we have, for some silly reason, come to expect a simple, boring slit, but why should we accept the bland, when we can have so much more thanks to Pinup Girl Clothing.

11001083_901327443220727_243687294_o (2)

The Delia comes in two other colour ways aside from black; it also comes in a cherry red with black lace, and a deep purple with black lace. All three equally as elegant.

As mentioned, I sized down in the Delia to a small. My measurements are: 37-30-41 ( they have changed a touch in the last few months). A small fit me perfect, so be sure to check the size chart before ordering. I have seen a few other gals try the Delia on and they had to size down as well.

At $145 the Delia is worth every nickle! This is sure to be my new go to, party dress.

Retroglam.com has all three colours to order online and Rowena has them in store. Don’t let this number slip by, as it truly is a timeless piece. I felt beautiful, stunning even, in it and that is a sure sign that one should own such a dress!

Rowena & The Junque Cellar

The other weekend I got to take part in a fabulous corroboration between Rowena and another local business, The Junque Cellar. The Junque Cellar has been around since I can remember and houses beautiful antique treasures! They are the only shop right on Whyte Ave that sells vintage furniture and housewares. On my walk home from work I often stop in and drool after all the beautiful pieces – they always have the best vintage couch sets! It’s a wonder why Rowena and The Junque Cellar didn’t collaborate sooner!

_DSC4467e

The shoot we did had more of a 60’s feel to it show casing some gorgeous Heart of Haute dresses and the always appropriate and timeless Erin from Pinup Girl Clothing! This shoot was extra cute because it involved a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead! The other two models are just adorable gals, who looked amazing in their dresses… like they were made for them!

_DSC4452e

Heart of Haute is easily becoming one of my favorite brands. The cuts are so flattering on so many body types and the patterns are always beautiful. They are also simple cotton dresses, so they are comfortable to wear and are so easy to dress up or wear casually.

The Monique is a very simple, a line dress, but it is a lovely fit and I am absolutely giddy over the harlequin print it just came in, in both pink and blue!

_DSC4436e

Heart of Haute also did the Beverly in black, which I am over the moon about. Finally, a simple, black swing dress! I imagine myself wearing it all the time – you do not know how  often I search through my closet for a simple black swing dress, always to be reminded that I do not have one! Kristen is wearing it below and doesn’t it just look amazing on her?

Heart of Haute is known for its classic 50’s & 60s silhouettes and patterns, which are very wearable. Everything they make is in cotton and made in the USA, which means they are built to last.

The amazing Hello June Photography was pumped to get to shoot at The Junque Cellar, where we were able to use the pieces they have for sale as props, to give this shot a great 60’s feel.

You can get all of the dresses seen above at Rowena in Edmonton or at RetroGlam.com.

I’ve had a look at the the new spring collection from Heart of Haute and there are some great patterns coming! Florals are back again, but there are some great 60’s cuts and tropical prints too. This upcoming spring/summer season seems to be promisising for a lot of the brands Rowena carries – looks like Im going to have to get a 2nd job 😉

Dont forget to follow Hello June Photography to take advantage of contests she runs or find out how to book a session.

And follow The Junque Cellar too, especially if you are like me and like to be teased by amazing vintage house wares!

Meet Hello June Photography

Finally, I get to properly introduce you to the women has been overly generous in photographing me in the past year. Without her, I would not have the beautiful images I do to keep with me as I age and to share with all of you now. Hello June Photography has given me the most beautiful photos of myself I have ever seen – and I don’t even care if that sounds vain. This women has a natural born talent to take photos and make you look amazing 100% of the time. She has also coached me on posing and built up my self-esteem by mounds!

1. Does Hello June Photography have a philosophy on photography?
Hm, it’s pretty hard to try and pinpoint a philosophy (also I feel more than certain I’m going to misinterpret this so lets just run with it!). I suppose it could be to use my camera as a tool to allow the subject to see how others view them. Not to try and sound pompous (as most do when quoting one of the “greats” in photography) but Ansel Adams said “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer”. I capture images specifically for the subject to be the viewer and I want them to see themselves through my eyes. Everyone is their own worst critique and I think to be able to see how someone else may view yourself may cause one to step back and see themselves in a new, hopefully more positive, light. If that happens, then I have succeeded at what I set out to do. And, you know, pretty pictures.
2. What kind of photography do you focus on and what is your favorite to shoot?I’m 100% portraiture. I have tried to photograph other things, but I never felt passion for it the same way as when I have a human subject. Give me anything retro inspired and I’m completely done. These days my focus is on pinup but it took a few years of dabbling and trying to be someone I wasn’t creatively to come to this point.
10423878_1557847161118950_3908505371244710877_n  3. Can you tell us a bit about the gal behind the lens?
Oh, you mean me? Well aren’t you just a doll to be interested! I guess the basics would be that I’m a mother of 2 living in the wonderful city of Edmonton with an obsession for antiques and spontaneous trips. I have an affinity for colourful hair, terrible jokes, and my personal style ranges from beer box t-shirts to over the top pinup. I’ve been shooting as my “main gig” so to say since 2010 but dabbled much before that (lets be honest it was mostly self portraits but it did teach me a lot).
4. Where and who have you worked with? Anyone we might know?Ah, time to name drop! I jest, but while in the past I have mostly done client work with those not in the industry I have gotten to work with some pretty cool people! I’ve had the honour of working with international pinup model Ruby Roxx in Vancouver recently which was a pretty amazing experience. Looking more locally I worked with Calgary designer Maark Abeenir of Averynthe back when his company was called Pretty Hipster as well as Katarina Zwierink who models and they are both doing pretty amazing things these days. Working with Rowena has allowed me to work with some locally known lovelies like Lucky L’amour, Maila Mustang, and yourself! Mostly though, I’m pretty new to working with those in the industry so I look forward to being able to work with more amazing designers, models, stylists and the like in the future!

5. What makes you and your style unique? What makes you stand out?
My colourful images and shining personality? Really though, it’s so hard to pinpoint what about my work, my style, is different from that created by others who photograph pinup. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere on shoots that allow my subject to be relaxed as well. Often this means lots of my terribly punny jokes, a dash of too much honesty, and letting my subjects know when they are really nailing a look (the amount of times I tell someone they are gorgeous on a shoot should be counted, I’m sure it would be in the double digits!). But with all this I think it allows images that are highly posed and directed to not look stiff or robotic. To get the look and style of a 50’s pinup, on the modern woman – the modern pinup. That, with my own love and obsession for what pinup is, mixed with influence from the great pinup artists Vargas and Elvgren and photographers Bunny Yeager and Viva Van Story, creates the imagery and style that is Hello June Photography.

6. Is there someone or somewhere you would just love to shoot?

Gah, how can a photographer limit their list of “want to photograph” down to a reasonable rate for a blog post?! Location wise I honestly have a short attention span and love shooting in the great outdoors. To be able to go back to Europe and shoot in Lausanne (or pretty much any other European city) would be a dream but give me even a prairie field and I’m over the moon elated. Like I said before, there are some honestly amazing pinup models in Vancouver like Elly Mayday, Kerosene Delux, and Jen Kaboom but I would be lying if I didn’t admit I would probably fan girl way too hard if I ever got the chance to photograph the lovely Mosh.

I highly recommend Hello June Photography for your next photo shoot. I especially recommend her for a pinup shoot and if you have not done any pinup modelling before, she will guide you in posing to make sure you end up with amazing photos. Not only does she capture beautiful images, Hello June Photography has fun with her shoots, making you feel at ease, relaxed, and like a total bombshell – its true, I should count how many times she tells me I’m gorgeous next time we shoot!
