Laced Up Cabaret

Last Friday evening I attended Sweet Carousel Corsetry’s Laced Up Cabaret – an evening of decadent fashion and jaw dropping burlesque shows. I love any opportunity to get extra dolled up so as soon as I saw this event I knew I simply must go! Plus one of my besties was modeling!

1935544_10156540345220417_6571701509619404285_nThe acts of the evening were just spectacular. Special guest included Kira Von Sutra, Amber Ray, Raven Virginia, and Dangrrr Doll – my goodness these gals where fantastic. They way they moved, their costumes, and the acts themselves were beautiful!

Local talent were also present and included the likes of the stunning, Violette Coquette (one of my favorite – her costumes were so creative!), boylesque sensation Beau Creep, adorable and funny Cherry Monroe, Le Tabby Lexington who was cute as a button, and redheaded vixen Holly Von Sin.

I spent a lot of time figuring out what to wear….nothing was fitting me quite right and I really didn’t want to buy something new. I was beginning to worry….that is until I saw a fabulous vintage hat at Swish Vintage that I used for inspiration. From there everything fell into place.

20160513_201145

I ended up wearing my Oblong Box Shop pink tiki circle skirt,  HellBunny crinoline, black Fables by Barrie Bustier, Laura Byrnes shrug, Chelsea Crew mary jane heels, a vintage purse, vintage brooch, and that gorgeous vintage hat from Swish Vintage. The hat really encouraged the whole outfit – I don’t know what I would have done if I had not found it!

20160513_201136It was a lovely evening as well…summer has arrived early in Edmonton. No jacket was required for the night so I was able to display my outfit in full force.

A closer look at my outfit and my stunning gal pal who is wearing the design her wore in the Sweet Carousal show. All of the pieces were to die for and if money grew on trees, I would have them all!

20160513_214741My date and I stopped for a snack before the show and of course I had to snap photos, because well, we just looked so darling eating hot dogs!

20160513_194256isnt my friend a knockout?

20160513_194225Thanks again to Swish Vintage for the delish hat! Be sure to head over to their facebook page and stop in the shop to find some treasures for yourself!

Plus keep an eye out on The Oblong Box shop – she has some very fun new designs coming out soon, along with the very pretty ones released last summer, like the one I am wearing

Dark Knits Boutique Returns to RAW

I am so excited to have invited back to model for Dark Knits Boutique’s showcase at RAW this summer! Nikki, of Dark Knits, has cooked up one hell of a collection to show, entitled Divinity Anthology

12688278_10156536034145385_5060343704236566278_nThe new collection will feature stunning and intricate designs, spikes and straps, golden tones, and beautiful girls in divine corsets.

The event will include a ton of local talent – design, musical, artisans, painters, and more. This is a great event to support, as it directly supports local art. We need to nourish our community and support local artists and this is a great way to do it.

Tickets are only $20 for the evening of entertainment. Grab a few friends, make a night of it, and celebrate some of Edmonton’s local talent. July 14th, spend the evening with myself and a bundle of other babes outfitted in divine, custom built and sculpted designs

Last year’s look…

Get ready for Diner En Blanc with Danger De Lux & Swish Vintage

Diner en Blanc Edmonton  is right around  the corner, coming up on September  3rd. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, follow this link (https://www.facebook.com/DinerEnBlanc.Edmonton?fref=ts&__nodl), then come right back here. The main component or aspect  of  this fancy outdoor  dinner  party is that  all guests must wear white…from head to toe. For someone  who stears clear of white at all times this dinner party is both  a  challenge and the perfect opportunity  to actually  wear white with no inhibitions.

The instructions  were very clear that all items of clothing must be white…not ivory or cream, not off white or egg shell…white. This too can be a challenge…finding something purely white. Well, Danger De Lux to the rescue! I’ve picked out all of the beautiful  white things Swish Vintage has that you could wear to Diner En Blanc. For those who don’t  know, Swish  Vintage  is my favorite vintage  boutique and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown, in Manulife Place

aviary_1440531418953Swish has tons of white accessories to complete  your outfit. Necklaces, clip on earrings, bangles, and brooches all in crisp, clean white. When you have such a stark canvas, like a white dress, accessories play a  big part in making your outfit even more interesting. While dressing head to toe in white makes a big statement, layering necklaces and bangles help to make that statement scream.

No post involving  Swish would be complete without a few vintage hats. And of course  Swish has white hats perfect for a dinner party. Not only are hats way too much fun, you also don’t have to  do as much with your hair!

20150825_121827Sadly our summer nights are getting chilly, which means you should probably bring a cardigan or shawl with you, especially to an outdoor  dinner party. Plus you get extra elegance points when you have a gorgeous shawl draped over your shoulders. Swish has just a few white ones and at excellent price points.

20150825_121554

Don’t forget about a small, quaint evening bag to hold your lipstick and phone, cause you  know  you’re  going to want to document this night. I didn’t find any in the mall (like, duh) so where better to look  than an antique shop?!

20150825_121143I’ve put together  a few lovely white outfits for those last minute to the game. Swish has just a few white dresses and separates but they are beautiful and perfect  for the  occasion.

This stunning white party dress would have been my outfit if only it had fit. My goodness it is beautiful. It even has a built  in  crinoline and gorgeous structure. This is what white dress dreams are made of.

20150825_122645

20150825_122535For a more dramatic look, this 20s-esque beaded frock is ideal. It is simply divine and grande and elegant. It is quite delicate so this one may be best worn for a drink or two rather than worn late partying  into the night…but then again, when in Rome…

20150825_123230

20150825_123237Swish has in store a bridal crinoline in white, which I’ve paired four different tops and accessories to show some of the  different looks you can achieve with one staple piece. This crinoline  can easily be worn as an external piece and manipulated to convey different styles.

Dark Knits Boutique at Raw Edmonton

The other week I go to be a part of the Dark Knits Boutique fashion show at Raw Edmonton – an independent arts organization, run by artists, for artists. Dark Knits Boutique is an independently owned Edmonton custom corset designer.

10991319_10155713620810385_6188967335649114344_n

For the last show I was in for Dark Knits I was a lizard (you can read about it here). This time I got to be a beetle… an oh so majestic beetle. My amazing makeup, done by Corinne of Vampire Nomad Palette, was insane…I felt completely transformed!

11391366_722192884556513_4120843292000975869_nAll of the outfits, were fantastic! The makeup and hair was amazing! And this time around, Dark Knits made some insane head pieces for a few of the outfits.

Dark Knits Boutique had  models done up in different creatures, who modeled on platforms all night and mingled with the guests. We also did a fashion show to showcase all of the amazing corsets!

11392991_722193064556495_952832699430325784_nI absolutely love modelling for Dark Knits Boutique! It is always so much fun and I love being transformed into a magical creature!

Dark Knits Boutique Creature Couture Fashion Show

Dark Knits Boutique is a small, independent corset maker/company out of Edmonton, Alberta. All the corsets are lovingly made by one very talented lady, who learned the trade from her grandmother. I was so very excited when she asked me if I would like to be in her upcoming fashion show. Without hesitation I told her I would love to!

My creature was the lizard, which was based off of the Argentine Tegu, which is black and white; when born, it has an emerald strip from its snout down its chest, which eventually fades away to black.

The corset I was wearing was snakeskin pvc, paired with a snakeskin pvc collar, and white skirt. My hair was in a beautiful braid, done by Bettie Buxom. And my fantasy makeup by Corrinne of Vampire Nomad. Its always amazing to under go this sort of transformation, where when you look in the mirror, you no longer recognize yourself

11164049_10155470626325008_3724205904765908440_nAll of the makeup, hair, and corsets were just magical! There was everything from a unicorn (above) to a lion and a snake to a raven and everything in between. The corsets were all flawless and beautiful. All the guys and gals rocked their creature with confidence and pride knowing how much hard work went in to everything.

20150318_174125She came in the shop for a few hours to chat, meet some fans, sign autographs, and take photos. Cherry wanted to meet her as well, she came out to the meet and greet too 😉

why shopping local matters

As I grow older, I think more consciously about my purchases- do i really need this? can I afford it? is it cruelty- free? is is organic or natural? could i find this somewhere local? I live in a bustling neighborhood- the hot spot of the city, if you will. Because of my locale it makes it easier to buy local and support independent business. Almost every thing  I need I can find in my community.

LOCO_Buy-Local_Infographic1-e1368214478188

There are three groceries stores in a 10 block radius- two of them being organic. I buy the majority of my clothing at the store I work at, which is an independently owned and run shop. I buy all my toiletries at the pharmacy in my neighborhood. I go to the yoga studio and gym near by. I buy all my book at the book stores a few blocks away or go to the library literally 2 blocks from my apartment. You get the idea.

When I see something in the mall I know I could also get at an independent retailer, I will usually wait to buy it. While I do occasionally shop at box stores, I prefer not to. Sometimes it will cost more to shop at a small business, but think about how your money is helping them and the neighborhood they are in thrive. Shopping local helps build the community, creates jobs, fuels the economy, and keeps small businesses open. When I buy produce at the Farmers Market I am giving my money to a person and not a corporation, I am helping to ensure they can keep growing the vegetables they do, I am eating seasonally ( which is so good for our bodies), I know I am buying quality products, and I supporting the endeavors of others in my community.

abe05290652e90c79e4ad716f8d67277As I mentioned, I work at a small, independent store, which sells rockabilly, pin-up, and vintage reproduction. I have heard many times, customers say they just want to try an item on so they can go buy it online or they saw it cheaper on line, so they refuse to buy it at the store. Blank stare. You’re kidding right? When people shop online they are NOT supporting their own community and in the long run, they are contributing to putting independent companies out of business. Yah, sometimes you can find something cheaper on line, but after the shipping and the possible duties, you don’t save much. Not only is it important to shop local, but if you do shop online, shop Canadian.

keep-it-local-logo-conceptsI can’t say I shop local 100% of the time or I buy from Canadian websites all of the time, but I do make the effort to do so. I think we all should. Why wouldn’t you want to support your own economy- the one you are directly effected by. I know that money sometimes is the issue…it is cheaper to shop at Walmart or a big box store than a small grocer or independent pet store, etc. Do some comparison shopping, sign up for newsletters, watch for sales, and get a ‘reward’ card.

I plan to compile a more complete list of Canadian companies and local, for Edmonton, companies, but here is a small start:

Barefoot Venus- made in Kelowna, British Columbia

Rowena and Retroglam.com– Edmonton, Alberta

Wild Prairie Natural Skin Care– Canadian made natural soap and other body care

Lux Beauty Bar–  boutique selling cosmetics and other beauty products in Edmonton, AB

Keep an eye out for a more complete list and feel free to comment with some Canadian companies you love!
