All Natural Pinup: My Favorite Mascara

For the last 8 months or so, I have been switching over all my cosmetics and toiletries to all natural, chemical and cruelty free versions (read more about it here). I have converted almost all of my makeup now to the natural version of what I once used. While some of it is quite different ( the lipsticks), some of it is very much the same (eye shadow). One of my favorite conversions so far so been the mascara.

Pure Anada is my favorite all natural cosmetics company- they have everything you need to make the switch, plus are Canadian and budget friendly ( read more about them here). Today I want to dedicate a whole post to their mascara…oh boy, do I love their mascara.

10987314_875939745806055_7817043415040917192_nSince I was a teenager,  I have been constantly looking for the perfect mascara. Something that will give me volume, without clumping. Something that will give me length and will stay on. And of course, it had to be the blackest black.

I bought Pure Anada’s mascara without reading any reviews or even knowing if it would be good. All I knew was that Pure Anada was a chemical free company and was on Jill Deacons list of good cosmetic companies to buy.  I bought it off of well.ca, where I get most of my natural cosmetics. It was only $14 so I didn’t think it was too much of an investment if it didn’t work out.

690ada796e8418d70e7ed33925561466_ra,w403,h403_pa,w403,h403It did work out. And it was amazing. Just think, you can get drug store brand mascaras for the same price ( sometimes more) and those ones are filled with cancer causing chemicals. Pure Anadas mascara is paraban, mercury, and gluten free. Instead it is made with coconut oil, olive oil, and rice bran wax. It has a small list of ingredients which you can pronounce!

As a pinup gal, your makeup is a huge part of your look. And, for me, the eyes are the most important – a good cat eye, strong, shaped brows, and luscious lashes. A lot of gals wear false eyelashes, and believe me, if I could just master it, I would too. But let’s me honest, I do not have the time and at my new job, they aren’t really appropriate. So, I turn to mascara to give me the lashes I need to complete my look. Pure Anada mascara makes my lashes long and voluminous and oh so black.

11898588_972422856157743_3661863588802776548_nWhile, in the past I always bought water proof eye makeup, this mascara is not waterproof, which is fine. It has great staying power despite not actually being water proof. I can teach a class and get sweaty and still not have raccoon eyes. That being said, it is easy to take off too- I use Green Beaver Makeup Remover.

Well.ca carries almost all of Pure Anadas products, but if you head over to Pure Anadas website you can see actual stores that sell their products. I have tried a bunch of their products and have loved every one…I have yet to have a bad experience with any of their cosmetics – ive tried their eye shadow, concealer, bronzer, eye brow powder, mascara, lipsticks, brushes, and tinted moisturizer and I have loved it all!

11130177_914311358635560_4274429871939484649_nHave you tried any chemical free cosmetics yet? Which are your favorites?

Dark Knits Boutique Creature Couture Fashion Show

Dark Knits Boutique is a small, independent corset maker/company out of Edmonton, Alberta. All the corsets are lovingly made by one very talented lady, who learned the trade from her grandmother. I was so very excited when she asked me if I would like to be in her upcoming fashion show. Without hesitation I told her I would love to!

My creature was the lizard, which was based off of the Argentine Tegu, which is black and white; when born, it has an emerald strip from its snout down its chest, which eventually fades away to black.

The corset I was wearing was snakeskin pvc, paired with a snakeskin pvc collar, and white skirt. My hair was in a beautiful braid, done by Bettie Buxom. And my fantasy makeup by Corrinne of Vampire Nomad. Its always amazing to under go this sort of transformation, where when you look in the mirror, you no longer recognize yourself

11164049_10155470626325008_3724205904765908440_nAll of the makeup, hair, and corsets were just magical! There was everything from a unicorn (above) to a lion and a snake to a raven and everything in between. The corsets were all flawless and beautiful. All the guys and gals rocked their creature with confidence and pride knowing how much hard work went in to everything.

What’s in Your Makeup Bag: Danger De Lux Revisited

I wanted to do another and final “whats in your makeup bag”, featuring my makeup bag again. Since my first post, I have changed most of the makeup I use, as I have been transitioning into a chemical free lifestyle. Its a sad truth that the makeup we use it chalk full of chemicals that are very harmful to our bodies. Its also a sad truth that most of use don’t even think twice before buying and using chemical laden products and cosmetics. I posted not too long ago about a book I read, There’s lead in your Lipstick by Gill Deacon, which opened my eyes to the harm of every day cosmetics. Since then, I have begun replacing all the products I use with ones that are chemical free. I have almost finished replacing all my makeup, which has proven to be the hardest part. I have found some really great, quality, chemical and cruelty free cosmetics that have now become part of my everyday beauty regime. You cannot find these products at the drug store or even Sephora; I’ve purchased them at my local organic grocery store and online at well.ca, which offers a ton of great chemical free options, at great prices ( plus if you spend $25 or more, you get free shipping).

1506989_10152608319530872_1073914276374264163_nI’d say about 90% of the makeup I use every day is chemical free, which means it doesn’t contain any sulphates, parabens, talcs, plastics, fragrance, pthalates, SLS, mercury or lead. By default it is also all natural, usually organic, and always cruelty free. I can feel good knowing I am not putting toxins into my blood stream or harming my organs with the cosmetics I am using. I am still using some of the cosmetics I had before, as I do not want to be wasteful or toss it out to simply harm the environment. The tranisition has been long and it is still continuing. Some items, like eyeliner and eye brow products, which are the most important to me, are harder to find;I need a good quality eyeliner and brown pencil to achieve my look, so I am still on the hunt for those.

Here is all the makeup I currently use

20150215_162252 (2)Pacifica Eyeshadow pallets – still in need of more colours though, especially browns, which is what I usually use

Pure Anada Mascara ( a Canadian Company)- while I usually opt for a water proof mascara, that is something I will probably have to give up. This mascara is really nice; its doesn’t clump, but goes on really smooth and is very black.

Pacifica eye highlighter

Pure Anada Foundation – very light and not cakey at all! I apply mine with a foundation sponge.

Pure Anada mineral bronzer – one of the nicest bronzers I’ve used to date; I know not everyone uses a bronzer, but I feel like with my freckles, its needed and looks nice.

Physcians Formula Mineral Powder – I need to replace this though, as Physicians forumla isn’t actually organic, despite it saying so ( companies are allowed to lie about being organic or all natural)

Annabelle Eyebrow pencil –  I need to replace this as well

Anastasia eyebrow pomade and shawdow- this stuff is great and is cruelty free, just not chemical free.

Pacificia finshing powder

Maybelline cream eyeliner and felt eyeliner – I ran out of mine and needed one quick, so both of these will get replaced when they run out

20150215_162136 (2)

Aubrey Moisturizer – which I love! It has the slightest scent and is one of the best moisturizers I’ve used.

Pacifica CC Cream with spf 17

20150215_162511 (2) 20150215_162549 (2)

20150215_162805 (2)

Beseme Lipsticks in Cherry Red, Red Velvet, and Dusty Rose –  I love beseme but once these are done, I probably wont use them again; they are cruelty free, but not chemical free

Boho Cosmetics in Capucine (light pink) and Groseille; I also have two lip liners from Boho, as this company is all natural. These lipsticks are also quite nice and have good staying power, especially with a liner

Green Beaver lip glosses ( a Canadian company) – these have great colour, are not sticky, and are pretty top notch for lip glosses

20150215_162652 (2)Pacifica Perfume- made with essential oils and not synthetic fragrances, cruelty free, vegan, paraben free, and made with just a handful of ingredients. Look at the ingredients list of your perfume and you will likely not recognize most of the ingredients.

20150207_111348 (2)Snapshot_20150216_6

I’ve heard some people say its hard to buy cruelty free, which would mean chemical free is even harder to buy… it is and it isn’t. Like I mentioned, you will not find this stuff at Sephora or the drug store, so it isn’t convenient to get. But it is worth the extra trip to the organ market to get it. Or order it online like I do, from Well.ca

The brands to look for are: Pure Anada, Green Beaver, Pacifica, Boho, Earth Lab, Gabriel, Sante, Weleda, Audrey, and Dr. Hauschka. Don’t be fooled by brands pretending to be organic or all natural. The regulations for this kind of branding isn’t really protected. Any brand can say they are all natural or organic if they have one, miniscule ingredient which is. Garnier Fructis advertises organic products, which are anything but. Be a smart consumer and know what ingredients are in a product. The chemicals and toxins found in most common cosmetics are known to cause cancer and other ailments; most of these products are also tested on animals, for no good reason.

Danger De Lux goes all natural

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have noticed lately I have been posting about natural cosmetics…face wash, feminine products, shampoo, toothpaste, perfume…. It is all because I read a book I had heard about years ago. I saw it in the Library last month and figured I may as well read it ( I love to read, btw). The book that has changed every thing for me was There is Lead in Your Lipstick by Gillian Deacon… Now I know it sounds silly to say one book has changed my whole perspective on makeup and toiletries, but it completely opened my eyes to how much chemicals are in our beauty products and how most companies are lying to us about the ingredients they are using.

lipstick-coverCompanies are allowed to say they are all natural or use natural ingredients even if they arn’t or don’t. Cosmetic companies are allowed to use ingredients that cause cancer and illness and sometimes don’t even list this ingredients. There is some special loop hole that a product with a scent can simply list perfume or fragrance, as it is the brands ” secret scent”….one which is usually laden with chemicals. It’s a shame because so many people believe companies when they say they are natural or organic, when most of the time its a lie, or perhaps one or two ingredients are natural. I think it is important to know what you are putting on your body and essentially in your body as your skin absorbs all those chemicals.

cosmetics-inline-5Some of the most common chemicals in cosmetics include SLS, parabens, phthalates, tar, formaldehyde, and well, I could go on. In the very basic form of it, these toxins cause cancer, hormone disruption, damage to vital organs such as the liver, etc. It’s really scary when you think about it… How many chemicals are you using every day? Gillian Deacon states that the average women uses/applies 126 chemicals before leaving the house each day. I am not okay with this and that is why I am changing my entire beauty and body care regime. I poured out most of my old chemical filled products and have replaced them with homemade ones or truly 100% natural, chemical free ones.

dangers_of_lipstick_heavy_metalsThe cosmetics industry is not required to prove an ingredient is safe for human health before it is used in a consumer producthttp://www.gilldeacon.ca/projects-lipstick.php

I have switched about half or more of my products over to 100% natural, and while yes, some are more expensive ( like deodorant and toothpaste)  I have found some great deals and quality products at great prices. Thus far I have been shopping at Planet Organic ( my local organic grocery store) and Well.ca. Planet Organic carries essential oils and all the ingredients to make my own products- and they often have products on sale or offer 10% customer appreciation days. Well.ca offers free shipping on orders over $25 and are always having sales. I have found great products at both of these places without breaking the bank. All the products are also Cruelty Free, which is something I think is very important- no animals should have to suffer for our vanity…ever!

lead-in-lipstickI highly recommend you all read There’s Lead in Your Lipstick by G. Deacon and really think about what you are putting on and in your body. Keep an eye out for more posts on specific products and beauty rituals- shampoo and hair washing. nail polish. feminine products. getting a pinup look with all natural makeup. perfume…oh goodness how I love perfume!

What’s in your makeup bag: Kerosene Deluxe

Bombshell Kerosene Deluxe is on the blog today sharing her favorite makeup with us. This mega babe hails from Vancouver, Canada, but is originally from Amsterdam. She is a highly successful plus size model, whose work ranges from pinup to gothic to fetish. Kerosene Deluxe is always looking fabulous and I cannot wait to share with you what makeup she uses – she even studied cosmetology in Amsterdam! Kerosene Deluxe also support body positivity, which in our world, is extremely important- love your body and all bodies equally – it sounds simple, but its not being practiced very well by a lot of people out there.

Here is what Kerosene Deluxe had to say about her look

“I have always had a flair for the dramatic and glamorous but also the dark and macabre. I’d say my ‘look’ tends to walk a line between classic Pin-Up glamor with a dose of Gothic chique.
I strongly believe I’d be a drag queen if I was born a man, haha. I like make-up, a lot…and have never been ashamed to admit that I wear a lot of it. I’ve been intrigued by it since I was a small child. My mother was a very glamorous woman and I used to love watching her getting ready (and rummaging through her cosmetics when she wasn’t home). I started wearing make-up at a young age, much to the dismay of my teachers. For my 8th birthday I received a beauty case filled with make up, I remember being overcome with joy with this treasure! 10 years later I put myself through cosmetology school to become a make-up artist. I do my own photo shoot make-up 99% of the time. I actually enjoy this process and taking my time getting ready, it get’s me into the character I will be portraying in the shoot.
For me make-up has always been more about art rather than vanity. (I feel equally comfortable barefaced as I do dolled up). I love experimenting with colors and avant-garde looks. I don’t believe in ‘trends’, seasonal or age appropriate propaganda…I believe in wearing what you love and doing so with pride. “
KeroseneBijouxJune2013-3004805-Edit (2)Kerosene broke down her look between day and evening for us as well!
Daytime Make-Up:
“I will start off with a smooth and even canvas. A lightweight foundation, concealer under the eyes, a light dusting of setting powder and some soft contouring with bronzer, I’ll pop a bit of a coral blush on my cheeks and a bit of highlighter on my cheekbones, under the brow bone and cupids bow (above the lips)
For the eyes I’ll apply a champagne tone (slight sheen) on the eyelid and a medium beige shade into the crease and lower lash line. I’ll finish it with winged black eyeliner (I tend to wear mine quite thick) and mascara (top lashes only) followed by filling my eyebrows.
My lip color that day depends on mood and what I’m wearing. Bold ruby red’s, vibrant pink’s and soft peachy shades are my go to’s.”
sf (2)Evening and Photo shoot Looks:
“Honestly anything goes for this and I tend to pull out all the stops. I’ll substitute the lightweight foundation for a fuller coverage cream based one (Cover FX total cover cream foundation), amp up the contouring and highlighting and dramatize the eyes by adding shades of black eye shadow (and/or a variety of other fun colors) and further extending the wings and width of my eyeliner.
I will often wear multiple pairs of false eyelashes for special events. Yes at once..I’ll stick and stack a couple on top of each other for extravagant drama. My brows don’t go through a drastic change for an evening look as I enjoy a strong and sharply filled and shaped brow day or night..
I’ll wear whatever lipstick shade suits my fancy; red, black, green..You name it!”
DSC_8401 copyweb (2)Here are Kerosene’s favorite products…are you ready for it?! S
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
This is how it all starts, a good make up needs a smooth canvas. A pea-sized amount of this applied all over the skin will ensure a smooth and even application of your foundation but also increases the longevity of your make up. Smashbox for me, is the king of primer and this one is my all time favorite.
Guerlain Lingerie de Peau foundation
This foundation provides medium coverage and feels like air..Seriously, it feels like you are wearing nothing! It is SO beautiful and has a nice glowy finish. Perfect for a polished daytime look (but would totally work for evening too) I love this stuff..
NYX Stay matte but not flat powder
I love this powder because it’s super versatile (and also suuuper inexpensive!), it can be applied with a brush and make a great light setting powder but when applied by powder puff actually gives you a decent bit of coverage. I has  a nice non chalky finish. Because of that it makes a great little compact..I always have this one me..(car, purse, gym bag or in my husband’s pocket when I don’t feel like carrying a purse)
Smashbox Contouring Palette
So they actually discontinued this a while ago but after much uproar from fellow beauty fiends decided to bring it back. (Thanks goodness, I just couldn’t even….) It has 3 shades inside; a deeper contouring shade (for a dramatic contour), a bronzer shade (for adding warmth, glow or a soft contour) and an ivory shade (which can be used for subtle highlighting) All shades are matte which is perfect. The tones work really well as neutral eye shadows too should you have limited make-up bag space or need a multi-purpose product. It comes with a great little angled contouring brush ❤ I hope they extend the shade range for these in the future so that a variety of people with different skin tones can enjoy them too.

Stila Custom Color Blush ‘Self adjusting Coral’
This is a great blush that gives you a lovely healthy glow..I adore coral shades because they bring such life to the skin and look great on all complexions. You can layer and ‘build’ the pigment of this blush too, to get the desired level of drama an color.
Estee Lauder Double Wear ‘stay in place flawless’ concealer
Concealer would probably be my number 1 ‘must have’ cosmetic item. I have terrible dark circles (no matter how much sleep) under my eyes and your average concealer just doesn’t quite cut it for me. I love this particular one because of it’s great coverage yet complete lack of creasing or settling into lines due to it’s long-wear, no transfer formula. It’s great for vacation too as this concealer is waterproof..Trust me I’ve tried and tested!
542233_10200716211010784_1039784132_n (2)
Smashbox ‘Fade to Black’ eyeshadow palette
Sadly this palette was a limited edition item from Fall 2013 and no longer available, which is sad because it’s a fantastic palette with shades suitable for soft daytime to dramatic evening looks. Due to the depth of pigment this palette lasts pretty long (as you don’t need a lot of product), which is great because I treasure it and don’t want it to run out. This is usually the shadow palette I’ll take with me when I travel, because it’s so versatile and compact in size so easy to fit into a smaller cosmetic bag.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color
I cannot even begin to say how much I love this product. It’s phenomenal. If you like super precise and neat brows this is a great product for you, because it’s liquid eyeliner like brush will give you the cleanest lines ever. You can softly feather in strokes or just go full on dramatic statement brow with this and it’ll all look fab..Best part, it will literally stay alllll day (as the name suggests), it’s sweatproof, waterproof, rubproof…It seriously won’t budge…LOVE
Geisha Ink Liquid Liner
I have a major love affair with eyeliners that don’t smudge or run..This is because I have year-round allergies which often leads to watery eyes. This amazing liner will not disappoint on that front, because once it’s on, it will stay there (until it meets Mr waterproof make-up remover). It’s hard to say what my favorite thing is about this liner because it’s just a total package of awesome. I can safely say I’m an eyeliner aficionado and this one is by far the best liquid liner I’ve ever used. The super precise microfiber brush tip gives an easy and superior application and the liner itself is jet black, so you don’t have to layer it to get that intense black finish. Bonus: Geisha Ink is a Canadian brand:)
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner in ‘Snow’
This is a new product in the Stila range and therefor new to my happy make-up collection. I find myself asking where this has been my whole life, because I’m obsessed with it. What it is is a waterproof white liquid eyeliner. I use it right above my black eyeliner to give it pop. I love the contrast and the 60’s mod-like/vintage barbie look it gives.
Guerlain Cils d’Enfer Maxi Lash Mascara
I was never blessed with full luscious lashes, so good mascara is a big deal to me. This mascara is great because it provides everything I want; A jet black finish, lots of volume, lift and curl.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick ‘Beso’
Another stellar product in Stila’s ‘stay all day’ line. This is my absolute favorite red! It’s super matte and long wearing, the perfect shade and lasts through nibbles and smoochies. Because of it’s lasting formula you don’t even need to use a lip liner with it, as it won’t ‘bleed’ ever…
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Matte in ‘Pagan’
I’ve always been a big fan of OCC’s ‘lip tars’ because they are super awesome glosses with great color and hold. This shade is a new favorite of mine, it’s a black with undertones of purple and super dramatic. I’ll wear it on it’s own if I’m serving up Goth realness or I mix in a drop with my other lipsticks to darken them and create custom shades. It gives a nice fresh feel on the lips too due to the peppermint oil ingredient.
Dior’s Dior Addict Extreme lipstick in Pink Icon
This is my favorite neutral pink shade for a soft shiny daytime pout. It makes my lips feel moisturized and plump.  I love Dior lipsticks…
Rodial Dragon’s Blood Hyaluronic Tonic mist
Last but not least, the one that seals the deal…So this is actually a toner (a great toner) but I use it as a finishing mist. It’s refreshing, smells nice but also set’s my make up. The hyaluronic acid ingredient is great for your skin and provides moisture and plumpness, while the dragons blood (not actual dragon’s blood but a tree sap) is a great skin soother and healer. I always carry this around because aside from a wonderful setting spray it also works great when I have allergic skin flareup’s and redness.
botb (2)
What a great and complete list of products! I am interested in checking out the Stila brow color and Geisha Ink eyeliner (my eyes tend to water a lot as well). I am a huge fan of Canadian or American made products, especially as this means the products are more likely to be cruelty-free. The Geisha Ink website list the stores that carry their brand and there are 9 shops in Edmonton that do ( including Lux Beauty Boutique) and you bet I am going to go pick up an eyeliner! I’ll let you know what I think. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to do this series- to find out about new, amazing products I had no notion of- thanks Kerosene!
unnamedA huge thank you to Kerosene Deluxe for sharing a few of her beauty secrets with us. Not only is she delightfully gorgeous and talented, Kerosene seems like a real down to earth gal – someone I would want to be friends with. I wish all the best and even more success to her!

What’s in your makeup bag: Sheri Bomb

When I first got into blogging, I came across the blog Sheri Bomb– instantly I loved this girl. I loved her blog- the look, the content- and wanted my blog to be just as good as hers ( i don’t know if it is yet, but I’m trying 😉 ). Sheri is a rockabilly bombshell, who lives in Australia ( so jealous).  I have yet to go to Australia and dream oh so bad of going. From the blogs I follow, I believe it is safe to say they have a pretty rockin scene down there. While Edmonton has great shopping for rockabilly and pinup clothing, the scene leaves much to be imagined… it is fairly small. While I’ve noticed other cities have a big scene, who are into not only reproduction clothing, but true vintage, swing dancing, music, cars, furniture, and lifestyle, there are just a few of us here who have a true love for it all. Anyway, let me get back to the reason for this post… Sheri Bomb is sharing with us what is in her makeup bag!

473504_269498526459513_677194970_o

I asked Sheri if she wanted to be a part of this series, because she just a fun, down to earth kinda gal. She has a very clean look- not everyone wants to use a ton of makeup and not every one needs to, and you do not need to use a lot of makeup to get a pinup look either.

Sheri-137-Edit-Edit( Photo by Megan Rizzo Photography)

Sheri is a writer, so she had a lot to say about her look. Here it is:

MY LOOK

For my everyday look, I like to look polished and put together but I also like to be out the door fairly quickly in the morning, but would rather stay in bed than spend too long on my makeup. I try to keep things fairly simple while still proudly rocking my rockabilly look. I make things easy for myself with a BB cream, brow kit and light sweep of blush before spending a bit of time on my winged eyeliner. When it comes to my night time look, I still like to keep things fairly classic and understated (most of the time). I like my makeup to look as natural as possible so apart from a great foundation, slightly bolder cheek colour and some sparkly eye shadow everything is fairly similar, except a more ‘enhanced’ version. I also spend a bit more time and effort on achieving a more dramatic look with my lashes (I rarely wear false lashes) and of course, a good red lipstick to pack a punch.

MAKE UP BAG

10717857_10152411375073733_1156624019_n

Day Look:

Benefit Big Easy BB Cream in Fair

This is a recent addition to my make up bag. I’ve always been a big fan of BB creams for my everyday look as I like the easy coverage and application they provide and the natural looking result, not to mention the benefits for my skin. I used to only use the Garnier Oil-Free BB Cream in Light but I picked up this new Benefit product while I was in the US recently and have been loving it! It really ‘sticks’ to your skin. Although the Garnier product is much cheaper and given I use it everyday, I’ll probably end up going back to this product when the Benefit runs out.

Benefit Brow Zings in Dark

This is the second Brow Zings shade I’ve bought – I also used to have the Medium shade when my hair was a different colour. I swear by this product, it is the best make up for brows I’ve ever used. It’s really easy to apply and the teeny little brushes make it easy to get the perfect shape. I like that the first layer of tinted wax you apply keeps your brows in shape while the finishing layer of powder helps to fill them in and acts as a sealer, preventing smudging.

Classics Eyeliner Pencil in Black

I don’t always use this, but I always like to have it in my make up bag as it’s handy for lining the inner rim of my eyes, particularly up the top if I’m after a more dramatic look. It really helps to fill in the look of your lashes when they need a bit of a help. A simple must have product in any make up bag.

Rimmel Extra Wow Lash Mascara in Extreme Black

A favorite mascara of mine for a long time, I’m a big fan of Rimmel cosmetics in general as they are a great alternative for gals on a budget and for all the makeup basics. This mascara goes on easy with no clumps and offers a great result with only one or two applications. It also goes well with up to four applications if you’re looking for a dramatic result. I usually go two applications during the day and four applications for night time. It’s also great on sensitive eyes, which I have, so no irritation and especially no watering and smudging. Winner!

Stila Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black

Another product I picked up in the US, I’ve always preferred felt tip liners as I don’t have a particularly steady hand and I feel that they offer me more control. This Stila liner is easy to use, glides on like a dream and doesn’t budge without some serious rubbing. Easy to touch up if you make a mistake, the liner has staying power that lasts all day. Love it!

Benefit Cheek Powder in Rockateur

As you can probably tell by now, I’m a big fan of Benefit cosmetics. Aside from their cute packaging, I’ve always found their products to deliver on their promises and they seem to work really well for my skin. This powder blush looks fairly shimmery in the box but offers very subtle illumination when you actually apply it. It has a lovely pinky peachy hue to it that looks fairly natural, however can be built up for a darker shade that contours the cheek for maximum impact. During the day I use a light sweep across my cheeks but come the night time I tend to amp it up a bit more.

Benefit Tinted Lip Balm in Benebalm

Created with their famous Benetint (which was originally created as a nipple stain for a burlesque dancer in the 70s) this tinted lip balm hydrates your lips without stickyness or too much shine – two of my pet hates. The subtle red rosey hue brings your lips to life without making you look too made up. It also has the same pleasant sweet rosey scent that the Benetint has.

Night Look:

When it comes to my night time look, it’s fairly similar to my daytime look but with a little extra to make things more dramatic.

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation in Ivory

I love love LOVE this foundation! It’s the best one I’ve found so far. It provides flawless coverage and brightens your complexion. Another product that really ‘sticks’ to your face, it doesn’t set to a matte finish, but that can quickly be rectified with a light dusting of powder.

Besame Violet Brightening Powder

The perfect way to set your make up and brighten your complexion, this very subtle tinted violet powder gives a smooth matte finish to your skin and is small enough to pop into your handbag to take with you, meaning you’ll never look oily or shiny while out and about. It’s amazing what a difference a light dusting of this stuff makes, although keep in mind it’s more suited to pale skin tones.

Sephora Collection Moonshadow Baked Palette in Nude

A beautiful palette of 10 neutral eye shadows with a charming shimmery finish. Light and dark shades are well balanced in this palette which provides everything you need for a classic light shimmery eye or a more daring smokey eye. Coverage is good, the powder is soft (without breaking apart in the palette) and the shades are easy to build up and/or blend with each other. This always comes in handy for creating a striking look on my eyes, regardless of how bold I want to be.

MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Must Be Red!

This lipstick is my absolute favorite! I have a few different brands and shades that I wear from time to time but this is the one that I always love coming back to time and time again. It goes on smoothly, has serious staying power, doesn’t bleed or feather, doesn’t dry out your lips and best of all, it’s the most perfect pin up shade of red. Reds can be hard to perfect and everyone is different but this shade works fantastically with my skintone. Mwah!

why shopping local matters

As I grow older, I think more consciously about my purchases- do i really need this? can I afford it? is it cruelty- free? is is organic or natural? could i find this somewhere local? I live in a bustling neighborhood- the hot spot of the city, if you will. Because of my locale it makes it easier to buy local and support independent business. Almost every thing  I need I can find in my community.

There are three groceries stores in a 10 block radius- two of them being organic. I buy the majority of my clothing at the store I work at, which is an independently owned and run shop. I buy all my toiletries at the pharmacy in my neighborhood. I go to the yoga studio and gym near by. I buy all my book at the book stores a few blocks away or go to the library literally 2 blocks from my apartment. You get the idea.

When I see something in the mall I know I could also get at an independent retailer, I will usually wait to buy it. While I do occasionally shop at box stores, I prefer not to. Sometimes it will cost more to shop at a small business, but think about how your money is helping them and the neighborhood they are in thrive. Shopping local helps build the community, creates jobs, fuels the economy, and keeps small businesses open. When I buy produce at the Farmers Market I am giving my money to a person and not a corporation, I am helping to ensure they can keep growing the vegetables they do, I am eating seasonally ( which is so good for our bodies), I know I am buying quality products, and I supporting the endeavors of others in my community.

abe05290652e90c79e4ad716f8d67277As I mentioned, I work at a small, independent store, which sells rockabilly, pin-up, and vintage reproduction. I have heard many times, customers say they just want to try an item on so they can go buy it online or they saw it cheaper on line, so they refuse to buy it at the store. Blank stare. You’re kidding right? When people shop online they are NOT supporting their own community and in the long run, they are contributing to putting independent companies out of business. Yah, sometimes you can find something cheaper on line, but after the shipping and the possible duties, you don’t save much. Not only is it important to shop local, but if you do shop online, shop Canadian.

keep-it-local-logo-conceptsI can’t say I shop local 100% of the time or I buy from Canadian websites all of the time, but I do make the effort to do so. I think we all should. Why wouldn’t you want to support your own economy- the one you are directly effected by. I know that money sometimes is the issue…it is cheaper to shop at Walmart or a big box store than a small grocer or independent pet store, etc. Do some comparison shopping, sign up for newsletters, watch for sales, and get a ‘reward’ card.

I plan to compile a more complete list of Canadian companies and local, for Edmonton, companies, but here is a small start:

Barefoot Venus- made in Kelowna, British Columbia

Rowena and Retroglam.com– Edmonton, Alberta

Wild Prairie Natural Skin Care– Canadian made natural soap and other body care

Lux Beauty Bar–  boutique selling cosmetics and other beauty products in Edmonton, AB

Keep an eye out for a more complete list and feel free to comment with some Canadian companies you love!
