the end of a decade

At the end of the month I’m turning….30! Good golly! I have no idea where the time went! I am planning a mega fun and kitchy party to celebrate…I am hoping I remember to take photos to share! I am throwing a 60s mod party, complete with fondue, and punch, and silly games!

7153437_f520I was having trouble deciding just what to do. Originally i was hoping to head down to Vegas, but it is really not feasible with this silly economy of ours! So I hoed and hummed over just what to do… And I finally decided that something fun and colourful and bright. I always dress in 50s style clothing and wanted to stick to something close to what I usually wear, but more playful and less constricting. Plus my apartment is more comfy than classy, so sassy cocktail dresses just didn’t seem right

tumblr_lxmnl8g5sL1qhfsodo1_1280A friend of mine, who is a designer, is going to make me a little mod dress…but that deserves a whole post for its self, so no more on that until later!

I am a little sad to be leaving my 20s behind, especially since I didn’t quite get everything done that I was hoping to by now, but I am looking forward to the year, in which I plan to do many- a great things!

I am so looking forward to a weekend off work full of frivolities, pretty dresses, cocktails, cake, and giggles!

why shopping local matters

As I grow older, I think more consciously about my purchases- do i really need this? can I afford it? is it cruelty- free? is is organic or natural? could i find this somewhere local? I live in a bustling neighborhood- the hot spot of the city, if you will. Because of my locale it makes it easier to buy local and support independent business. Almost every thing  I need I can find in my community.

LOCO_Buy-Local_Infographic1-e1368214478188

There are three groceries stores in a 10 block radius- two of them being organic. I buy the majority of my clothing at the store I work at, which is an independently owned and run shop. I buy all my toiletries at the pharmacy in my neighborhood. I go to the yoga studio and gym near by. I buy all my book at the book stores a few blocks away or go to the library literally 2 blocks from my apartment. You get the idea.

When I see something in the mall I know I could also get at an independent retailer, I will usually wait to buy it. While I do occasionally shop at box stores, I prefer not to. Sometimes it will cost more to shop at a small business, but think about how your money is helping them and the neighborhood they are in thrive. Shopping local helps build the community, creates jobs, fuels the economy, and keeps small businesses open. When I buy produce at the Farmers Market I am giving my money to a person and not a corporation, I am helping to ensure they can keep growing the vegetables they do, I am eating seasonally ( which is so good for our bodies), I know I am buying quality products, and I supporting the endeavors of others in my community.

abe05290652e90c79e4ad716f8d67277As I mentioned, I work at a small, independent store, which sells rockabilly, pin-up, and vintage reproduction. I have heard many times, customers say they just want to try an item on so they can go buy it online or they saw it cheaper on line, so they refuse to buy it at the store. Blank stare. You’re kidding right? When people shop online they are NOT supporting their own community and in the long run, they are contributing to putting independent companies out of business. Yah, sometimes you can find something cheaper on line, but after the shipping and the possible duties, you don’t save much. Not only is it important to shop local, but if you do shop online, shop Canadian.

keep-it-local-logo-conceptsI can’t say I shop local 100% of the time or I buy from Canadian websites all of the time, but I do make the effort to do so. I think we all should. Why wouldn’t you want to support your own economy- the one you are directly effected by. I know that money sometimes is the issue…it is cheaper to shop at Walmart or a big box store than a small grocer or independent pet store, etc. Do some comparison shopping, sign up for newsletters, watch for sales, and get a ‘reward’ card.

I plan to compile a more complete list of Canadian companies and local, for Edmonton, companies, but here is a small start:

Barefoot Venus- made in Kelowna, British Columbia

Rowena and Retroglam.com– Edmonton, Alberta

Wild Prairie Natural Skin Care– Canadian made natural soap and other body care

Lux Beauty Bar–  boutique selling cosmetics and other beauty products in Edmonton, AB

Keep an eye out for a more complete list and feel free to comment with some Canadian companies you love!

Barefoot Venus: making your skin silky smooth, the natural way

I first fell for Barefoot Venus a few years ago, when a good friend gifted me some of their luxurious lotion for my birthday. I am a sucker for anything natural, organic, or cruelty free…In fact, I tcruelty-free-beauty-300x336hink every one should be. I don’t believe animals should suffer so we can wear pretty lipsticks and eyeshadow, wash our hair and face, or indulge in body lotions. We can do all of those things with products that are cruelty free, by companies who have a conscious and are able to provide outstanding products without harming animal.

Barefoot Venus makes a wide variety of products: body lotion, facial cleansers, body wash, bubble bath and salts, lip balms, hand and foot lotions, and more. Their products are made without parabens, sulfates, synthetic colours, propylene glycol, all those unnecessary unnatural ingredients. Instead, Barefoot Venus uses shea and cocoa butter, natural fruit and herb oils and extracts, green tea, and all the yummy, natural things. You can feel the difference when using this product. Their body lotions are so rich and actually moisturizing; when using a drugstore lotion, they feel sparse and watery and not at all moisturizing.

Barefoot Venus is also made in Canada! I rejoice when I can find a quality product I love and in purchasing it can support the economy I live in.

17_large_2_largeNot only does Barefoot Venus have an amazing product, they have the cutest packaging! A bunch of their products feature adorable pinup girls… how perfect! With scents like Vanilla Shake, Lemon Freckle, Coconut Kiss, Hunny Mango, and Wild Ginger & Sweet Orange, there is something to delight everyone. Just listing all the scents is making my mouth water… goodness me, I need to get more Barefoot Venus lotions and quick! Barefoot Venus also makes for a delightful gift for birthdays, weddings showers or gifts, for the hard to buy for, for the just because, for gift exchanges…for any occasion.

Barefoot Venus is just divine, plain and simple. And what pin-up girl does not want to feel divine?

vanilla_bliss_largeoat_soak_web_large

I can’t stress enough how important I think it is to buy cruelty free and natural products. Yes, they are more expensive, sometimes significantly, so they can be a luxury. That being said you can definitely find makeup, soaps, tooth pastes, and cleansers for a similar price to the unethical ones society has accepted as the norm. In regards to body lotions like Barefoot Venus, you use less of the products because it works so well, so it will last longer. And if it is still out of your budget… you can also ask for it for your birthday or Christmas, like I will be doing this year! Or you can use the coupon code Barefoot Venus has so graciously offered for my lovely readers! Head over to their website and at the checkout use the coupon code: DDELUX-01P. This code will get you 15% off your order, but hurry, it expires October 31st, 2014

If you live in Edmonton, you can find it at When Pigs Fly on Whyte Ave. The Barefoot Venus website also has a store locator, so you can find out who sells it in your town. And don’t forget to take advantage of the fantastic coupon code Barefoot Venus has for us! DDELUX-01P

A day out with Sourpuss

It was a beautiful day out and after a big run, all I wanted was to spend even more time outside soaking up the sun. It was the perfect day to head down to Fort Edmonton Park- a step back in time! I wanted to wear something cute and light, so of course I wore my Floozy dress from Sourpuss Clothing.

fort edm park 003

The first stop in the fort in The Midway Park, which I absolutely love! In fact I was thinking what a great place it would be to have a wedding ( I’m not getting married…yet). There was a Ferris Wheel, a lovely carousal, and a bunch of old fashioned midway games!

fort edm park 004

Everyone who works at Fort Edmonton Park are dressed for the era they are working in and are in character the whole time. One gal told me I looked very pretty, but next time I wear a short dress, I should be wearing stockings! It was quite cute.

fort edm park 010

The Floozy dress is comfortable, but still cute, which is what I want in a little day dress. The dress comes with the red belt shown, which I love – I think polka dots and red are like chocolate and peanut butter. I wore a little anchor necklace, which matched the colors of the dress, and a couple little black roses in my hair.

fort edm park 016There are tons of old cars to go with the different eras represented. This was an old fire hall, this thus the vintage fire trucks.

fort edm park 018I love old signs like these ones! I had to snap a photo in front of the Coca Cola billboard – I thought it was a great pair with my dress, don’t you?!

Like the previous Sourpuss dresses I have reviewed, this one is a medium. It fits good, just like it should. My measurements are: 36-29-40. This little dress is such a good summer frock, especially when it is priced so reasonably. Check out Rowena or RetroGlam.com to find the Floozy and other sweet summer dresses from Sourpuss Clothing

fort edm park 021

Sourpuss makes great little pinup dresses, that are so affordable but still good quality. I always feel cute when I am wearing one of their dresses! I have one more little Sourpuss dress to review, so keep an eye out for that! In the meantime, follow me on:

the Gil by Sourpuss Clothing

I had mentioned in a previous post I had four Sourpuss dresses I wanted to share and review. The first was the Pillaging Puppies Rizzo dress, and the second is the Gil. The Gil has this new age spacey look, mixed with retro stewardess – it is nothing like anything else I own.

2014-05-31 01.05.48 (2)

The Gil is super fun and flirty, with red piping, cute princess-type cap sleeves, and a sassy cut out on the front. A co-worker and I wore the Gil to the Alberta Bound Tattoo Convention, where we worked the Rowena booth. We got so many compliments on our outfits and a handful of people who wanted our photos.

tattoo convention 005We wanted to make our outfits extra special by making some giant hair flowers, so we went to the craft store, loaded up on flowers, and went to town.

2014-05-31 01.06.01 (2)2014-05-31 01.01.37 (2)We wore these dresses all night and they were so comfortable. I felt so fun and pretty. This is a great little dress, which can be super casual when worn with flats and a pony tail, or more formal with heels and some fancy hair. The Gil has a cute retro costume feel to it, but don’t let that deter you, instead let that be the reason you get it! It is so much fun!

tattoo convention 004I’m wearing a medium in the Gil and it fits to a ‘t’. My measurements are:

36-29-40

Sandra is wearing a large, which fit her perfectly as well. Her measurements are:

38-31-41.5

Get your hands on one of these dresses while you still can, because I don’t anticipate them lasting long. This dress is an absolute steal at $57- it is the perfect addition to any pinup gals wardbrobe. Head down to Rowena or RetroGlam.com to get one for yourself

the alberta bound tattoo convention

This past weekend was the Alberta Bound Tattoo Convention. Because the shop I work at is pretty cool, we had a booth at the convention to advertise all the wicked clothes we sell and also sell some of those wicked clothes. I had the fortune ( or misfortune…) of setting up, tearing down, and running the rodeo! But the best part of it was getting all dolled up with the other gals from the shop and showing off all the pin up dresses we sell at Rowena! I made sure to get lots of photos to show you our fancy outfits.

tattoo convention 003

Each day, me and the other gal(s) wore matching outfits, had our hair done up and big smiles on our faces. So lets get to it…

Day 1: Friday night was “Adults Night”. A bunch of burlesque performers put on a show -most notably the gorgeous Ophelia Overdose performed two fantastic numbers.

My gal pal and I wore the Gil by Sourpuss. We also made some pretty wicked hair flowers to match our dresses. I don’t want to go too much in to detail about this lil number, because I want to review it for you all later.

tattoo convention 007

I snapped a few photos of Ophelia too…

tattoo convention 009tattoo convention 012Isn’t she adorable?

Day 2:  Saturday, the day that would not end…. this was the longest day, coming in at 10 hours ( the longest working the show…Friday was a 12 hour day). There were three of us working and we all wore the Dames Dress by Deadly Dames/Pinup Girl Clothing. For all you Cry Baby fans, this dress was based off of the one Wanda wore in the film. I found some gorgeous black orchids at the craft store, so made them in to hair flowers to wear with the Dames dress.

Day 3: The final day of the convention. We didn’t have quite matching dresses, but we both wore leopard by Pinup Girl Clothing. Mine is the leopard Heidi and Meagan wore the retro leopard Vamp. I through my hair up in a PUG nylon scarf and it was a mess from the other two days; I’m really into that whole mini beehive I mentioned in a previous post.

10373947_10152239038588224_2104106952553043253_nIt was fun to see all the different artists and performers, even if the days were long. It was also nice to get out of the shop for the weekend- a change of scenery is always good. After three very long days, I am left exhausted, but at least I got to get dressed up, meet some nice people, and let every one know about the best pin-up shop in Alberta…Rowena of course!
