Friday Finds: this weeks haul at the thrift store

I have been so darn busy lately that I haven’t had time to go to my favorite thrift shop as much as I would like, but I finally found some time this week!  One of my first stops in the store is the furniture section, where this trip I instantly saw a vintage credenza for only $50…it had a sold tag on it…of course. I let myself feel sad for just a moment and turned away and my eyes instantly found a kidney bean shaped coffee table!!! I have never seen one on real life, I practically ran over, and guess what?! It had a sold sign on it too, as well as the price… 20 freaking dollars. I almost started crying….why have I been so busy lately? why haven’t I been making time to thrift shop? why didn’t I get here sooner? For about the next half an hour, my stomach felt sick, that is until I found knick knacks to take my mind off of the loss. I spent just $19 and came away with an arm load of goodies! My haul consists mostly of vintage knick knacks, which I am in the market for anyway. So here we go, this is what I picked up this round:

A gold letter tray/sorter? I believe that is what this is… this lil guy was only a dollar. Im not sure what I will use it for yet, but I will let you know

20150603_220107 (2)

The next treasure I found was a golden fawn bank, that was made in Japan. I love the kitschy look of this Bambie and would you believe it only cost 50 cents!! This picture does not do it justice.

20150603_215850-1 (2)

This periwinkle blue violin vase can also be hung on the wall, which makes it that much more interesting. I dont have anything like it, but I was drawn to it for some reason.

20150603_215916-1 (2)

20150603_215909 (2)

I found this darling little dish which I thought would be just perfect for holding jewelry, don’t you think?! This was a great find at only $1! And it was made in the USA!

20150603_220325 20150603_220330 (2)

This crystal decanter will look perfect on my little tiki bar. Ive always wanted a fancy decanter to pretend I am suave like those in the golden days. For $4 I could not pass it up.

20150603_215943 (2)

This may be my favorite find of the day… this divine, white and delicate purple floral jar. It was half price, so was only $1.50…and I needed it!! Im not quite sure where I will put it or what I will use it for, so when I figure it out, I’ll post it on instagram ( so keep an eye out for that)

20150603_220041 (2) 20150603_220049 (2)20150603_220029 (2)

And my final find, what seems like a deadstock, suitcase. The inside is pristine, as well as the outside, which is what makes me believe it has never been used. I was on the look out for a suitcase to make into a bed for Cherry ( my boston terrier), but this one is just too perfect to mess around with. I plan to use this guy on weekend getaways…which one day, I may just have time for 😉

What is the best gem you’ve found lately?

Swish Vintage- a fab boutique full of vintage finds

I’ve recently begun a new job at a fabulous vintage shop downtown. Swish Vintage is chock full of beautiful vintage dresses from the 1910 onwards. You will find the most styles within the 40s to 70s and in a wide range of sizes! Along side dresses and other items of clothing, you will find tons of gorgeous handbags, beautiful jewelry, shoes, hair scarves, furniture, and knick-knacks. Oh, and hats! I have never seen so many amazing vintage hats…Swish is the mecca of vintage hats!

swisj 001

Swish is located in the heart of downtown, along 101 avenue and 102 street. It is a beautiful shop, owned by a lovely lady who does all the hunting and procuring herself. Swish has been in its current location for an amazing 6 years and before that in the highlands.

swisj 003

Every time I walk into Swish, I search the racks for new treasures. And I find something new and beautiful every time! The vintage dresses in the shop make my heart skip a beat… oh gawd, they are so beautiful! Most of the ones I love the most are too small for me…especially my hips! If any of you Edmonton gal reading this are small, hurry up and get down to Swish to find some amazing dresses at fantastic price. That being said, there are a ton of great frocks in bigger sizes…meaning larger than a 26″ waist.

swisj 002

You can also find some great vintage coats, fur and otherwise, at Swish. I tried almost all of them on one day…I couldn’t help myself, they were all so pretty! And warm! Which, if you live where we do, you need a warm winter coat.

I always find something to covet when I scour the racks at Swish and you can bet you will be seeing it all on my blog and social media!

swisj 007swisj 018Now, lets get to the hats! Oh my goodness! The hats at Swish are divine! I also tried a bunch on one day… I want them all! Most are in fabulous condition too! There are felt hats, ostrich feather hats, hats with veils and bird feathers, sunhats, turbans, day hats, evening hats…and on it goes

swisj 008

swisj 009And the holy grail of vintage hats….a 1970s vintage Christian Dior turban, with its original box! Excuse me while I wipe away my drool!

swisj 011I am just so happy to be working at such a beautiful, fun shop that is new and exciting every week. If you are on the hunt for quality vintage you need to come down to Swish! Weather you are in need of an outfit for an event, wear vintage on a daily basis, are looking for a gift, or just love the hunt, Swish is your destination! And if you come on a Tuesday, I’ll be there!!

Danger De Lux Re-Decorates

I live in a city that has really high rental rates, even in bad parts of the city. I totally lucked out 6 years ago and got a good apartment in one of the the best parts of town for a really good price. This apartment has seen me through a university degree, a personal training diploma, a horrible breakup, girl parties, good times, bad times, living alone, with others, a puppy and a kitty. I have a love-hate relationship with this apartment. Its too small, its old, and has some problems. That being said, I have no plans to move. So what is one to do? De-decorate!

Over the years my apartment has seen many transformations and now it is all finally coming together in a style I truly love. As I finish some other rooms, I will share them too! Today though, I am simply sharing a wall. A wall, which makes me happy every time I look at it now. A wall which has changed the whole mood of the apartment and has set the stage for things to come.

I also wanted to share this particular wall to let you know how affordable it was to re-decorate. All the pieces on the wall were thrifted and the paint cost $15, which makes me even prouder of my little wall.

mint wall 016While most of my apartment is outfitted in mid-century modern style, this wall has a very 1950s feminine style to it, which reflects one side of my personality and taste. Opposite of this wall is another, bigger wall which is covered in photos of Bettie Page, pinup girls, vintage ads, chalkware fish, etc. Having a sweet and simple wall contrast with a very busy wall, in a way that meshes pleases me.

Here is a break down of the cost to do this wall:

I found the beautiful gold mirror at a garage sale for $10!! You really just got to keep looking and you will find great pieces like this.

mint wall 012

The three crotchet pictures cost $11 all together. I found them at goodwill – it looked like someone had just cleared a bunch out because there were quite a few of them. I go to my local thrift stores quite often, which is what you need to do in order to find gems!

The two golden floral hangings I found at Value Village. I looked them up and they are from the 60’s – a total score. They cost me $6.

mint wall 011

mint wall 022

I got a one liter can of mint paint from the hardware store for $15

So in total, this project cost me: $42

I also purchased the phone/chair stand pictured a while back for probably $8-10 and reupholstered it with the leopard fabric, which I got at the bargain section of the fabric store.

mint wall 014 mint wall 015

If you look hard enough and give yourself the time to hunt and be patient until you find the right pieces, you do not need to spend a ton to decorate.

My bedroom, because it is a much bigger space cost more, but still an appropriate amount relative to its size. I’m hoping to finish it up soon to share with you all as well.

What do you guys think?! I am so pleased with myself 😉
