Danger De Lux: all work and no play…

I wanted to write a little post since it has been so quite around here lately…a tumble weed just passed by!! I have so darn busy with work I haven’t had a moment to think! I have been working 9+ hours almost every day and then have to hit the gym after, so you could imagine, I have no energy left for creativity.

BUT! I have a few exciting blog posts in the works! This morning Hello June Photography and I got together for a 60s inspired photo shoot with some gorgeous frocks I borrowed from Swish Vintage, paired with a few pieces of my own.

Hello June shared one of the photos already and I am over the moon! I can not wait to see the rest!

I need to make more time to do the things I truly enjoy doing…getting dolled up, organizing photo shoots, hunting for antiques, being creative, spend time with my gal pals… Right now, Im really just working and going to the gym; I love going to the gym, so no complaints there, but this work thing! haha

I know I have said this before, I am going to make more of an effort to post, even if they are short and sweet. So, stay tuned for some posts coming soon!

Vertigo Go Designs: an Edmonton retro designer

On Saturday I went over my gal pals house to check out some of her amazing mod designs! I tried on a few styles she had already made and picked out the fabric for my party dress! Nicole A Go Go is an Edmonton based designer, who focuses on mod, retro styles, bringing life back to old patterns and fabrics. You can find her designs at Vertigo Go, plus read about her adventures in fashion!

Nicole A Go Go was nice enough to let me snap a few photos of her studio to share with you! She uses really fun fabrics in bright colours and fun patterns! 20160116_134506You will find lots of flowers, polka dots, hounds-tooth, and geometric prints! Expect to see mini skirts and dresses, cropped tops with matching skirts, faux fur bubble gum pink swing coats, playsuits, and more!

20160116_134627

20160116_134418Nicole had a few outfits set aside for me, plus laid out a some fabrics for me to choose from. Once we figured out what fit me, I picked out my favorite fabric for my mod party dress! She had also picked out an orange mini skirt for me to try and is now going to make me a pencil skirt out of the same fabric. I am so excited to share my custom pieces with you when they are finished!

20160116_134355Vertigo Go designs makes affordable, quality, slow fashion pieces, to brighten up your wardrobe! She does custom work, as well, so if there is something you would really love to have, she can make it for you; she has made previous clients gorgeous play suits, mod dresses, and playboy bunny costumes.

20160116_134913I really want to focus on building a wardrobe full of quality pieces, that mean something to me and are going to stand the test of time. The longer I work at the mall, the more contempt I have for fast fashion. I want to support local shops and designers whenever I can. I want to spend more time shopping for vintage pieces and making the best choices for my budget and style. Nicole is making me a dress, a skirt, and a little something for Cherry for the cost of an outsourced dress from Guess or Aritzia. I am really excited and can’t wait to show you all when it is finished!!

A Very YEG Christmas: Danger De Lux Gift Guide –Shambhala Tattoos

My very #yeg gift guide continues today with Shambhala Tattoos, a tattoo and piercings shop independently owned and operated, just off Whyte Ave. Shambhala is different than most of the other tattoo and piercing on shops on the ave – they place a high importance on quality. Im sure you’re thinking “duh”, but there are a few other shops around who offer deals like “buy one get one free” on piercings or “just pay for the jewelry” or “all piercings $25” or whatever it might be. Ladies and gents, those offers should be like a big red flag telling you not to go in!! Why do you think they can offer the services so cheap? They use cheap jewelry and tools. Shambhala, like the rest of the good shops, uses quality jewelry and equipment. They also take the time to get the job done right, the first time. Ive had a piercing or two done and have also purchased beautiful and sparkly jewelry from Shambhala. I wanted to feature Shambhala to show you the gorgeous jewelry they sell, but also to let you know about this fantastic little shop. Not only are the independent but they all completely female owned and operated. This is not a small feat my friends. The owners are female, the tattoo artists are female, and the shop piercer is female. You will not find a more friendly and professional shop on Whyte ave, where there is no prejudice or judgment and so much emphasis placed on quality work, both tattoos and piercings.

holiday guide

My Shambhala Tattoo gift guide is here!

Septum piercings are all the rage right now and for good reason…the jewelry that is available for them is to die for. Santa, all I want for Christmas is a sparkly septum clicker!! Shambhala has these beauties in the shop right now and one of them may just have to be mine. Now, these cost a pretty penny, but that is because they are high quality!! These babies are from Industrial Strength, a highly respected jewelry supplier. Guaranteed if your gal has her septum done, she is lusting after a clicker like these.

20151216_143806 (2)These hoops are simple and stunning. They have front facing gems, so when worn through tunnels hang beautiful. These would be a fantastic gift for someone who wears tunnels regularly. Coming from a gal who has had stretched ears for 12 years, it is so refreshing to see all the options now available! These hoops are a great example of the fun things we can do with out stretched ears. Pick up a set, put them in a fancy box, tie it with a ribbon, and you are set!

20151216_143729

These lil guys go perfectly with hoops, like shown above. They are so light, as in they actually weigh nothing and are a nice break from what are usually quite heavy pieces of jewelry. These wood make a great stocking stuffer!!

20151216_144352 (2)I have one of these flower gems on my medusa and I love it!! I love how sparkly it is and makes me feel so glam. These little guys can be worn on a variety of piercings and would be a lovely gift to receive. These are a hot commodity, so hurry up and get one before it’s too late.

20151216_144036 (2)Shambhala has a variety of gem lined tunnels in all sizes. They also carry fun shapes, like the tear drops shown below. I would love to get my hands on a pair of shaped tunnels. I am positive any lady or gent would love to unwrap a pair of these sparkly beauties this Christmas.

20151216_144244 (2)

20151216_144259 (2)Shambhala has a great selection of curved barbells and navel rings/bars, with big glittering gems in tons of colours. You can just imagine how sparkly these babies could be in the summer sunshine that’s going to show up in a few months. Again, get yourself a pretty little box and tie it up with a fancy ribbon, and bam, you’ve got yourself one heck of a gift!

20151216_14390920151216_144521

This picture does not do these pieces justice. These opal and gemstones are divine! These are things that most gals probably do not treat themselves too, even though they should – they are beautiful. Grab your girl one of these this year and she’ll be kissing you long into the new year!

20151216_143929 (2)I’ve asked Santa for tattoo time this year, as all i really want for Christmas (besides a septum clicker) is a new tattoo. And if you’re like me, that’s just what you want too! Shambhala has gift certificates, where you can decide how much you want to contribute, and the receiver can then go get whatever tattoo tickles their fancy

20151216_145308 (2)

While you’re at it, why not treat yourself to a little something as well! Stop in to get a new piercing or tattoo to celebrate the New Year!

All Natural Pinup: My Favorite Skin Care Products

About 8 months ago, around my birthday, I began getting really bad breakouts. I had never suffered from acne as a teenager and rarely broke out. I always considered my skin to be ‘pretty good’. But of course, when I turn 29, all hell breaks loose! This was also about the time I become interested in using chemical free products – it would be a few months still until I changed my skin care products. But I was determined to get my face under control! I have never been good at covering up blemishes, so to get the pinup up face I wanted, I needed to have clear skin.

11693965_10153051056710872_2183776103872876915_nIf you have used any acne or breakout products, you have to know they are over flowing with chemicals! They smell of pure chemical. And this is not what I want to be putting on my skin. So I searched elsewhere, outside of the drug store, for a chemical and cruelty free product. I had read about Rocky Mountain Soap Company – that they are chemical free, Canadian company, with good practices- so when I stumbled upon them in the mall one day, I stopped in and bought a few items.

11987043_10155993431100008_6424575976049632147_nI was very impressed with the simplicity of their store. Minimal packaging, how it was laid out, things were easy to find, and when I checked out I was given a fancy pamphlet listing “no-no” ingredients that one should look for and avoid in products.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company products are now in my daily regime. My skin is back on track, which means no more breakouts! Oh sure I get the odd blemish here or there, but nothing like what was happening a few months ago.

So, what to know my favorite products?!

Avocado Facial Soap $5.25

indexI use this soap both in the morning and in the evening. It’s a gentle soap, that does not dry out my skin. And for the price, you really cant go wrong

Bamboo Brightening Face Polish $16

scba

I use this polish in the morning ( or in the evening if I have forgotten to use it earlier). It makes my skin feel refreshed and invigorated. It gets rid of all the dead skin and helps clear out my pores

Breakout Buster $9

static1.squarespace.com

This little stick in made anti-bacterial via the tea tree in it. It smells gently of tea tree, and we all know tea tree is a great anti bacterial and anti inflammatory agent. Its used as a spot treatment, so whenever I do have a blemish or feel one coming on, I use this guy, day or night

Beech Tree Bud Eye Cream $35

scec

I also use this amazing eye cream in the morning and the evening, before bed. It is nice and light and also very gentle, which is important for an eye cream.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company has some other products I really want to try, like their cleansers for example, so when I do Ill let you know how I like them!

I do use a few other skin care products from derma-e, aubrey organics, and green beaver, but I am really loving Rocky Mountain stuff right now.

They only have stores in B.C, Alberta, and Manitoba, but you can buy it all online! And, they also send a free gift, usually a whole bar of soap – I love when companies do that.

Like I said, my breakouts are now totally under controlled and my skin is back to normal! No need for chemicals, just all natural goodness!

Swish Picks: We’ve Hit the Jackpot!

Have I a great Swish Picks for you this week!  Swish has hit the 80s earring jackpot! My goodness, if I could wear earrings ( mine are stretched) half of them would be mine! All of these earrings came from one miraculous and organized lady. They came in sectioned containers and were colour coded! Colour coded!! I counted believe my eyes – a hundred pairs, if not more!

20150908_122256Of course, there were tacky, over the top pairs, but most were quite spectacular. Many were 80’s does 50s, others were gloriously and unapologetically 80s.

20150908_122418Ive snapped photos of my absolute favorites. But really, if you are in Edmonton, you should go rummage through the marvelous collection yourself!

Nautical realness

20150908_122646These pink ones are too much!! I love them all…I would buy them all of I could wear them!! But because I cant, you should all go buy them up and flaunt them for me!! Those faux wooden ones on the bottom right scream tiki pinup! Pair them with a killer hawiian wiggle dress and bam! Tiki babe!!

20150908_12283120150908_12390220150908_123706Eeee, aren’t they delightful!!

These hoops are so fly! Like mega 80s urban girl!

20150908_123404

This picture does not accurately show just how big those gold jeweled ones are. They are pretty serious earrings, for a pretty serious girl!

20150908_123220

I was able to pick out two pairs of hoops, similar to those below, that I can wear through tunnels, so I am pumped about that!

20150908_123558There were a whole ton of black and white ones; the ones below are my favorite of the bunch  – very typical 80s styles.

20150908_124022And these fun, colourful, floral ones, which if styled right could be the perfect 50s earring.

20150908_124129

This was just a tiny snippet of the glory of this collection! Okay and the best part?! They are only $10 a pair! What?! Yes!!

I am way too excited about this magnificent collection and the organizer in me, loves how well this lady organized them all. I spent way too much time looking at all, and I mean all, of the earrings…and then looking at them all over again.

20150908_122250How do you store your jewelry?! And could you imagine owning this many pairs of earrings?!

Friday Finds: Thrift Store Vintage

Every now and again I find amazing vintage at thrift stores…and not 80s or 90s vintage, but real vintage gold! I was at a small thrift shop about a month ago, not expecting to find much, but my eye caught something glittering among the h&m tunic dresses and beer box t-shirts. It was a gorgeous handmade shift dress…and would you believe it fit me perfectly?! I could not believe my luck! Whomever gave this frock away had no idea the joy it would bring one vintage loving pinup.

_DSC6576e (2)I was even more excited about the price I paid for this lovely dress… $3.50!! Can you believe it?! Goodwill colour codes their items and each week switches which colour is 50% off and it was just my luck that this one was on sale that day.

_DSC6575eHow did I know it was vintage and handmade? First of all, it had a metal zipper, which is a big giveaway. It also did not have a label indicating is was probably handmade. And it had a lot of extra fabric on the inside, to allow for it to be let out if need be; this is something that stopped as mass production become more and more popular. You will never see this kind of extra fabric in clothing nowadays.

_DSC6579e_DSC6578e (2)

Doesn’t it look like it was made for me? It is rare to find a vintage piece that fits so pristine.

I also found a little dress jacket at the vintage shop next to Rowena, called Decadence. And can we check out those amazing Bakelite bangles! Aren’t they divine?!

_DSC6584eIm sure this jacket had a matching dress back in its hay day. Now, its a nice, light, and lovely jacket to pair with an evening dress.

_DSC6581eI feel like a total catalog model in these shots! I love it! So cheesy. But hey, this jacket is just so cute! I paid $12 for this gem and can’t wait to find the perfect occasion to debut it.

_DSC6582eI have more Friday Finds in the works for you lovelies, so stay tuned!!

What was your best vintage dress find?

All Natural Pinup: My Favorite Mascara

For the last 8 months or so, I have been switching over all my cosmetics and toiletries to all natural, chemical and cruelty free versions (read more about it here). I have converted almost all of my makeup now to the natural version of what I once used. While some of it is quite different ( the lipsticks), some of it is very much the same (eye shadow). One of my favorite conversions so far so been the mascara.

Pure Anada is my favorite all natural cosmetics company- they have everything you need to make the switch, plus are Canadian and budget friendly ( read more about them here). Today I want to dedicate a whole post to their mascara…oh boy, do I love their mascara.

10987314_875939745806055_7817043415040917192_nSince I was a teenager,  I have been constantly looking for the perfect mascara. Something that will give me volume, without clumping. Something that will give me length and will stay on. And of course, it had to be the blackest black.

I bought Pure Anada’s mascara without reading any reviews or even knowing if it would be good. All I knew was that Pure Anada was a chemical free company and was on Jill Deacons list of good cosmetic companies to buy.  I bought it off of well.ca, where I get most of my natural cosmetics. It was only $14 so I didn’t think it was too much of an investment if it didn’t work out.

690ada796e8418d70e7ed33925561466_ra,w403,h403_pa,w403,h403It did work out. And it was amazing. Just think, you can get drug store brand mascaras for the same price ( sometimes more) and those ones are filled with cancer causing chemicals. Pure Anadas mascara is paraban, mercury, and gluten free. Instead it is made with coconut oil, olive oil, and rice bran wax. It has a small list of ingredients which you can pronounce!

As a pinup gal, your makeup is a huge part of your look. And, for me, the eyes are the most important – a good cat eye, strong, shaped brows, and luscious lashes. A lot of gals wear false eyelashes, and believe me, if I could just master it, I would too. But let’s me honest, I do not have the time and at my new job, they aren’t really appropriate. So, I turn to mascara to give me the lashes I need to complete my look. Pure Anada mascara makes my lashes long and voluminous and oh so black.

11898588_972422856157743_3661863588802776548_nWhile, in the past I always bought water proof eye makeup, this mascara is not waterproof, which is fine. It has great staying power despite not actually being water proof. I can teach a class and get sweaty and still not have raccoon eyes. That being said, it is easy to take off too- I use Green Beaver Makeup Remover.

Well.ca carries almost all of Pure Anadas products, but if you head over to Pure Anadas website you can see actual stores that sell their products. I have tried a bunch of their products and have loved every one…I have yet to have a bad experience with any of their cosmetics – ive tried their eye shadow, concealer, bronzer, eye brow powder, mascara, lipsticks, brushes, and tinted moisturizer and I have loved it all!

11130177_914311358635560_4274429871939484649_nHave you tried any chemical free cosmetics yet? Which are your favorites?

Don’t forget to use #allnaturalpinup on social media to let the world know you’re using chemcial free cosmetics
