Vertigo Go Designs: an Edmonton retro designer

On Saturday I went over my gal pals house to check out some of her amazing mod designs! I tried on a few styles she had already made and picked out the fabric for my party dress! Nicole A Go Go is an Edmonton based designer, who focuses on mod, retro styles, bringing life back to old patterns and fabrics. You can find her designs at Vertigo Go, plus read about her adventures in fashion!

Nicole A Go Go was nice enough to let me snap a few photos of her studio to share with you! She uses really fun fabrics in bright colours and fun patterns! 20160116_134506You will find lots of flowers, polka dots, hounds-tooth, and geometric prints! Expect to see mini skirts and dresses, cropped tops with matching skirts, faux fur bubble gum pink swing coats, playsuits, and more!

20160116_134627

20160116_134418Nicole had a few outfits set aside for me, plus laid out a some fabrics for me to choose from. Once we figured out what fit me, I picked out my favorite fabric for my mod party dress! She had also picked out an orange mini skirt for me to try and is now going to make me a pencil skirt out of the same fabric. I am so excited to share my custom pieces with you when they are finished!

20160116_134355Vertigo Go designs makes affordable, quality, slow fashion pieces, to brighten up your wardrobe! She does custom work, as well, so if there is something you would really love to have, she can make it for you; she has made previous clients gorgeous play suits, mod dresses, and playboy bunny costumes.

20160116_134913I really want to focus on building a wardrobe full of quality pieces, that mean something to me and are going to stand the test of time. The longer I work at the mall, the more contempt I have for fast fashion. I want to support local shops and designers whenever I can. I want to spend more time shopping for vintage pieces and making the best choices for my budget and style. Nicole is making me a dress, a skirt, and a little something for Cherry for the cost of an outsourced dress from Guess or Aritzia. I am really excited and can’t wait to show you all when it is finished!!

My Wish List Gift guide is here!

This Downtown Abbey jewelry is so pretty! They are very vintage inspired, so naturally I am drawn to them! This collection includes bracelets, gorgeous earrings, brooches, hair clips and pins, and necklaces. All the pieces either come in a box or on a lovely card, so they make for a perfect gift! And they are so very reasonably priced, so you can get her something sparkly without breaking the bank!

20151214_190005 (2)Now, if you have a pretty penny or two to spare you might consider picking up a gemstone ring from Thomas Sabo. I love black stones and these beauties do not disappoint. And if you’d like something a little lighter, there are white and blue stones as well. These babies range from about $250 to $600 but are just divine!

20151214_190402 (2)Like I mentioned, The Wish List is known for their assortment of tree ornaments. They also have a great selection of retro ornaments, like Rudolph, Elvis, campers, and these Mickey and Minnie Mouse ones. Seriously, if anyone wants to know what to get me for Christmas, these are what I want! They are so much better in real life too…Mickey and Minnie on the tea cups – how perfect!! I was told these are not made anymore, so they are extra precious. They go for $34 and would make a lovely gift as a set.

20151214_190937 (2)These retro reindeer are too cute! The whole gang is there, so you can get them all!! At only$18 these lil guys would be great for a gift exchange, a stocking stuffer, or for the hostess of a holiday party.

20151214_190119 (2)For the rockabilly guy or gal, inked couple, new parents, or old school lovers, these tattoo flash style ornaments are beyond perfect! Sold separate, so you can get one or the other…or go big, and get both!

20151214_185457 (2)The instant I saw these rockets I knew they had to be in the guide! These guys are heavy duty and would be a great gift for any vintage lover. I know  I went ga-ga for them! These bad boys go for around $50 but would absolutely make someone very happy

20151214_185333 (2)The Wish List has a great selection of glass bottle glasses. Again any vintage or eclectic guy or gal would love these guys! They are sold separately so you can mix and match the different styles and brands. These are great tom collins glasses; id pick up a cocktail recipe book to go along with a few of these and bam! perfect gift for a retro girl or guy, college kid, bachelor, or that one person you just don’t know what to get! For around 20 bucks a piece, you can’t go wrong.

20151214_184919 (2)These little tins are great as stocking stuffers or to act as gift boxes, which the receiver can then use again! They are great gifts if you don’t want to spend a lot or want to spice something up. They come in a variety of sizes with a bunch of different pictures.

20151214_190703 (2)The Wish List has a great selection of novelty print socks. These are a super fun little gift and there are tons of different styles and patterns to choose from. You really can’t go wrong with unique socks and unless you are buying from someone mega boring, these would be great for just about everyone!

20151214_184820 (2)There a bunch of fun mugs like this Robot one, which are right side up when flipped over. You can get animal ones too! Grab a tin of tea, a pretty gift bag, and you are good to go!! Perfect for a last minute gift, a exchange, a co-worker,

Get ready for Diner En Blanc with Danger De Lux & Swish Vintage

Diner en Blanc Edmonton  is right around  the corner, coming up on September  3rd. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, follow this link (https://www.facebook.com/DinerEnBlanc.Edmonton?fref=ts&__nodl), then come right back here. The main component or aspect  of  this fancy outdoor  dinner  party is that  all guests must wear white…from head to toe. For someone  who stears clear of white at all times this dinner party is both  a  challenge and the perfect opportunity  to actually  wear white with no inhibitions.

The instructions  were very clear that all items of clothing must be white…not ivory or cream, not off white or egg shell…white. This too can be a challenge…finding something purely white. Well, Danger De Lux to the rescue! I’ve picked out all of the beautiful  white things Swish Vintage has that you could wear to Diner En Blanc. For those who don’t  know, Swish  Vintage  is my favorite vintage  boutique and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown, in Manulife Place

aviary_1440531418953Swish has tons of white accessories to complete  your outfit. Necklaces, clip on earrings, bangles, and brooches all in crisp, clean white. When you have such a stark canvas, like a white dress, accessories play a  big part in making your outfit even more interesting. While dressing head to toe in white makes a big statement, layering necklaces and bangles help to make that statement scream.

No post involving  Swish would be complete without a few vintage hats. And of course  Swish has white hats perfect for a dinner party. Not only are hats way too much fun, you also don’t have to  do as much with your hair!

20150825_121827Sadly our summer nights are getting chilly, which means you should probably bring a cardigan or shawl with you, especially to an outdoor  dinner party. Plus you get extra elegance points when you have a gorgeous shawl draped over your shoulders. Swish has just a few white ones and at excellent price points.

20150825_121554

Don’t forget about a small, quaint evening bag to hold your lipstick and phone, cause you  know  you’re  going to want to document this night. I didn’t find any in the mall (like, duh) so where better to look  than an antique shop?!

20150825_121143I’ve put together  a few lovely white outfits for those last minute to the game. Swish has just a few white dresses and separates but they are beautiful and perfect  for the  occasion.

This stunning white party dress would have been my outfit if only it had fit. My goodness it is beautiful. It even has a built  in  crinoline and gorgeous structure. This is what white dress dreams are made of.

20150825_122645

20150825_122535For a more dramatic look, this 20s-esque beaded frock is ideal. It is simply divine and grande and elegant. It is quite delicate so this one may be best worn for a drink or two rather than worn late partying  into the night…but then again, when in Rome…

20150825_123230

20150825_123237Swish has in store a bridal crinoline in white, which I’ve paired four different tops and accessories to show some of the  different looks you can achieve with one staple piece. This crinoline  can easily be worn as an external piece and manipulated to convey different styles.

Friday Finds: this weeks haul at the thrift store

I have been so darn busy lately that I haven’t had time to go to my favorite thrift shop as much as I would like, but I finally found some time this week!  One of my first stops in the store is the furniture section, where this trip I instantly saw a vintage credenza for only $50…it had a sold tag on it…of course. I let myself feel sad for just a moment and turned away and my eyes instantly found a kidney bean shaped coffee table!!! I have never seen one on real life, I practically ran over, and guess what?! It had a sold sign on it too, as well as the price… 20 freaking dollars. I almost started crying….why have I been so busy lately? why haven’t I been making time to thrift shop? why didn’t I get here sooner? For about the next half an hour, my stomach felt sick, that is until I found knick knacks to take my mind off of the loss. I spent just $19 and came away with an arm load of goodies! My haul consists mostly of vintage knick knacks, which I am in the market for anyway. So here we go, this is what I picked up this round:

A gold letter tray/sorter? I believe that is what this is… this lil guy was only a dollar. Im not sure what I will use it for yet, but I will let you know

20150603_220107 (2)

The next treasure I found was a golden fawn bank, that was made in Japan. I love the kitschy look of this Bambie and would you believe it only cost 50 cents!! This picture does not do it justice.

20150603_215850-1 (2)

This periwinkle blue violin vase can also be hung on the wall, which makes it that much more interesting. I dont have anything like it, but I was drawn to it for some reason.

20150603_215916-1 (2)

20150603_215909 (2)

I found this darling little dish which I thought would be just perfect for holding jewelry, don’t you think?! This was a great find at only $1! And it was made in the USA!

20150603_220325 20150603_220330 (2)

This crystal decanter will look perfect on my little tiki bar. Ive always wanted a fancy decanter to pretend I am suave like those in the golden days. For $4 I could not pass it up.

20150603_215943 (2)

This may be my favorite find of the day… this divine, white and delicate purple floral jar. It was half price, so was only $1.50…and I needed it!! Im not quite sure where I will put it or what I will use it for, so when I figure it out, I’ll post it on instagram ( so keep an eye out for that)

20150603_220041 (2) 20150603_220049 (2)20150603_220029 (2)

And my final find, what seems like a deadstock, suitcase. The inside is pristine, as well as the outside, which is what makes me believe it has never been used. I was on the look out for a suitcase to make into a bed for Cherry ( my boston terrier), but this one is just too perfect to mess around with. I plan to use this guy on weekend getaways…which one day, I may just have time for 😉

What is the best gem you’ve found lately?

Friday Finds: vintage jewelry

Hello Kittens!! I have decided that every Friday will feature my newest and best thrift store and vintage finds. I seem to have such good luck whenever I go to the thrift store, garage sales, antique mall, ect and I figured you all might like to see what new treasure I have found…and maybe learn a few things about finding gems for yourself.

This past Monday the Old Strathcona Antique Mall was having a parking lot sale with a ton of vendors/tables selling all sorts of vintage ( and not) items. At these finds of things there is bound to be a lot of junk, but if you get there early enough and really look, you will find fantastic pieces. I am one of those people who will take ages looking through jewelry or bins or shelves just to be sure I don’t miss something fantastic.

I don’t usually get to go to many garage sales or the parking lot sale at the Antique Mall because I am literally always working, but because it was a holiday we opened later than normal at the shop so I made sure I was all ready to go to get down to the parking lot sale as soon as it opened.

I found some really great jewelry, which I know I got a crazy deal on. I wish I could have bought more, but it just wasn’t in my budget. Here is what I did get

A divine amber and gold tone necklace. This piece is quite flashy and gorgeous so will be reserved for a special occasion or a fancy night out. And can you believe it only cos t$12! There was no way I way leaving this piece behind!

necklace

The second item I found was very sparkly, purple, green, and gold brooch. Since starting at Swish my love for brooches has only grown, but now to include big crystal type ones like the one I found. When I saw the price tag, I knew it would be fine. I am certain I got an insane deal on this piece, as it was just $7!!

sparkle1

The last piece of jewelry I got because I went back to a vendors able for a second look, as he had so many brooches! I think this is my best find in a while…a 5.5″ long lucite parrot, by Buch + Deichmann for $5. I cannot wait to wear this piece! It is the best addition to my brooch collection yet.

 20150520_095929

bird2So, what do you think? Some good finds, hey?!! Keep an eye out every Friday for my latest finds… I have definitely got some good ones lined up for you!

When buying vintage jewelry, its a good idea to look long and hard anything and everything. Look for signatures on the back indicating it may be a designer piece. If something looks vintage and is plastic, there is a decent chance it is Lucite or Bakelite, so if its cheap, buy now and research later.

What great find have you come across lately?

Swish Vintage- a fab boutique full of vintage finds

I’ve recently begun a new job at a fabulous vintage shop downtown. Swish Vintage is chock full of beautiful vintage dresses from the 1910 onwards. You will find the most styles within the 40s to 70s and in a wide range of sizes! Along side dresses and other items of clothing, you will find tons of gorgeous handbags, beautiful jewelry, shoes, hair scarves, furniture, and knick-knacks. Oh, and hats! I have never seen so many amazing vintage hats…Swish is the mecca of vintage hats!

swisj 001

Swish is located in the heart of downtown, along 101 avenue and 102 street. It is a beautiful shop, owned by a lovely lady who does all the hunting and procuring herself. Swish has been in its current location for an amazing 6 years and before that in the highlands.

swisj 003

Every time I walk into Swish, I search the racks for new treasures. And I find something new and beautiful every time! The vintage dresses in the shop make my heart skip a beat… oh gawd, they are so beautiful! Most of the ones I love the most are too small for me…especially my hips! If any of you Edmonton gal reading this are small, hurry up and get down to Swish to find some amazing dresses at fantastic price. That being said, there are a ton of great frocks in bigger sizes…meaning larger than a 26″ waist.

swisj 002

You can also find some great vintage coats, fur and otherwise, at Swish. I tried almost all of them on one day…I couldn’t help myself, they were all so pretty! And warm! Which, if you live where we do, you need a warm winter coat.

I always find something to covet when I scour the racks at Swish and you can bet you will be seeing it all on my blog and social media!

swisj 007swisj 018Now, lets get to the hats! Oh my goodness! The hats at Swish are divine! I also tried a bunch on one day… I want them all! Most are in fabulous condition too! There are felt hats, ostrich feather hats, hats with veils and bird feathers, sunhats, turbans, day hats, evening hats…and on it goes

swisj 008

swisj 009And the holy grail of vintage hats….a 1970s vintage Christian Dior turban, with its original box! Excuse me while I wipe away my drool!
