A Very YEG Christmas: Danger De Lux Gift Guide – Swish Vintage

I am a huge fan of shopping local and independent. 90% of my wardrobe is from  local shops like Rowena or 2nd hand stores like Decadence. I especially  love to buy gifts from local shops and small businesses like The Wish List and The Junque Cellar. At a time like this, when we are all buying  gifts, big or small, a lot or a few, why not buy from an independent shop  instead of a huge corporation?

holiday guide

My YEG Gift  Guide  will help you  find the best local shops and gifts for everyone on your list! I want to start at Swish Vintage  as it is where I plan to get quite a few gifts for a lot of different  people…my secret Santa gift exchange, my good friends, my pen pals,  and  maybe something for myself ; )

Swish  is highly affordable and unique. The prices at Swish start at $5 and go up from there ( to a over a grand  depending on the exquisite item). I was able to get a handful of gifts for under $160; plus you will find many things on sale.

Here are my top gift picks from  Swish Vintage

These adorable green or yellow glasses/mini mugs. They come in a set of four and are just too cute. These little glasses would be perfect for new home owner, 60s lover, or tea lover! Plus they are only $35 for each set of 4.

20151208_150232 (2)Pill boxes have gone out of fashion and Im not sure why. When ever I take an advil out of my pill box, I feel oddly sophisticated! These gorgeous pill boxes are only $24, which means if you are on a budget, have to buy for a gift exchange, or just need a little something, Swish has you covered.

Swish also has an assortment of fun trinkets and household decor items. A recent addition, is this amazing poodle mail holder from the 1950s. It Made in Japan, which is even more lovely, as many of the good glass, porcelain, etc, pieces where made in Japan in the 50s. This darling piece would be perfect for writers, girly girls, collectors, and vintage lovers. This little poodle is only $35.

20151208_125414 (2)Every vintage loving gal swoons over good luggage! This travel hat case is divine and in perfect condition. This would look beautiful under the Christmas Tree! Any gals would love to receive one of this beautiful bracelets…a fiancee, a mother, a best friend. These are $140 each and oh so worth every penny.

20151208_125536My jaw dropped when I saw this hair late 1800’s hair comb. It is simply stunning and would be perfect for both a fashion and antique lover. The velvet and cameo choker is a lovely addition to the shop, and you know the 90s are back in fashion, so chokers are cool again! The haircomb is $98, while the chocker is a mere $35

20151208_125713

Swish Picks: We’ve Hit the Jackpot!

Have I a great Swish Picks for you this week!  Swish has hit the 80s earring jackpot! My goodness, if I could wear earrings ( mine are stretched) half of them would be mine! All of these earrings came from one miraculous and organized lady. They came in sectioned containers and were colour coded! Colour coded!! I counted believe my eyes – a hundred pairs, if not more!

20150908_122256Of course, there were tacky, over the top pairs, but most were quite spectacular. Many were 80’s does 50s, others were gloriously and unapologetically 80s.

20150908_122418Ive snapped photos of my absolute favorites. But really, if you are in Edmonton, you should go rummage through the marvelous collection yourself!

Nautical realness

20150908_122646These pink ones are too much!! I love them all…I would buy them all of I could wear them!! But because I cant, you should all go buy them up and flaunt them for me!! Those faux wooden ones on the bottom right scream tiki pinup! Pair them with a killer hawiian wiggle dress and bam! Tiki babe!!

20150908_12283120150908_12390220150908_123706Eeee, aren’t they delightful!!

These hoops are so fly! Like mega 80s urban girl!

20150908_123404

This picture does not accurately show just how big those gold jeweled ones are. They are pretty serious earrings, for a pretty serious girl!

20150908_123220

I was able to pick out two pairs of hoops, similar to those below, that I can wear through tunnels, so I am pumped about that!

20150908_123558There were a whole ton of black and white ones; the ones below are my favorite of the bunch  – very typical 80s styles.

20150908_124022And these fun, colourful, floral ones, which if styled right could be the perfect 50s earring.

20150908_124129

This was just a tiny snippet of the glory of this collection! Okay and the best part?! They are only $10 a pair! What?! Yes!!

I am way too excited about this magnificent collection and the organizer in me, loves how well this lady organized them all. I spent way too much time looking at all, and I mean all, of the earrings…and then looking at them all over again.

20150908_122250How do you store your jewelry?! And could you imagine owning this many pairs of earrings?!

Swish Picks: Vintage Jewels

Good vintage jewelry can be hard to find… there is tons of 80s crap, big plastic bangles, chunky beaded necklaces, and tacky earrings that look like they came from a jazzy jewelry set. Good vintage jewelry can also be extremely expensive, like bakelite, cameos, and seemingly whatever you love most in the display case.

Swish has divine jewelry in all price ranges and extravagance. She also has items from the early 1900s up to the 80s/90s, and occasionally, from today. Silver charm bracelets, bold red daisy brooches, classic cameos, rhinestone brooches, strings of pearls, screw back earrings, aurora borialis, and everything in between line the display shelves.

Swish has a beautiful collection of rhinestone brooches, many of them by Sherman, in all colours and shapes. You can also find gorgeous rhinestone and crystal clip on earrings…which make me sad I have stretched ears, otherwise they would all be mine!

Here are some of my favorite pieces in the shop, plus some pretty unique ones

These Chanel clip ons are to die for. They are quite big too, which makes them even better ( the bigger, the better, right?). For a pretty penny these darling sunhats could be yours!

20150811_131012I am really  into Amber  right now, so these delight me. These bracelets  are so pretty! Did you know Amber is made from sap and if it has bugs or bug wings in it, the piece is instantly worth more?!

20150811_133302 I love this necklace and  earring  set…I imagine a sassy lady like Joan (from Mad Men) wearing it. This tone of green is very bold and striking, surely to stand out among all the other boring jewelry in the room…why blend it, when you were born to stand out?!20150811_132929I love the  colors in this set. I want it! But again, I can’t  wear  earrings, even  if  they are clip ons. My loss is your gain!

20150811_131056These filigree butterflies  are so dreamy and dainty. They are antique and probably quite old….perhaps  early 1900s…? I would love for them to be mine…men of the world, are you listening 😉

20150811_131122One of the many sparkly  pieces in the shop. I love  when jewelry still has its tags attached. This one is from The Hudsons Bay Company. I also love to see what they originally cost!

(sorry this picture is so blurry…still getting used to the camera on my tablet…i guess you just have to come down to the shop to see it in person)

20150811_133204

I just love how sparkly this one is, especially when it catches the light…its divine!! Could you imagine pinning this to your jacket or frock for an evening out, or at a wedding, perhaps. It is guaranteed to get you many compliments, and what lady wouldn’t want that?

20150811_132809Swish has a beautiful collection of crystal pieces, that glitter in the sunlight. I love the two-string necklaces, like the one below; they are so elegant and feminine.

20150811_133119This black three string necklace is one I have been lusting after; it’s in near perfect condition and cost but a few pennies ( well more than that, but it is priced quite low). I love anything black, so vintage + black is a total win in my books. Plus it has that iridescent, mirror ball quality…its not just black, but has purple and pink and green!

20150811_133039Swish has plenty of darling brooches, some with matching earrings. I love this daisy cluster, which is pretty 60s. And the gold tone flower is one of my favorites! The red and black one is a great rockabilly piece; I could see it on a cardigan and blouse for a night out dancing! All three are in excellent condition and very affordable. Swish is a place where everyone, in every price range can shop, and find something they cheerish.

20150811_132800

20150811_131024

20150811_133438

Some of the unique and interesting pieces in the shop include this set of bracelets made of elephant tail hair! Apparently, Elephants scratch themselves against trees and their tail hair gets caught and falls off; so if this is correct, these bracelets are cruelty free, which is amazing!

20150811_133335Swish also has this pin made of Moose hair…how bizarre!

20150811_133402And one for the Disney lovers, like me…isn’t he just the cutest!

20150811_131240So, what do you think of this snippet of the collection at Swish?!

What’s your favorite piece of vintage jewelry?

Swish Picks: handbag heaven

Swish Vintage has a glorious collection  of handbags, in every shape, fabric , and price you  could  ask for. It takes everything I have to convince myself  each week that I do not need another bag…I don’t really believe myself,  but I  listen  anyway. Today’s  Swish Picks is full  of  all my favorite  handbags currently in the shop. Hold on to your seats lady and maybe grab a napkin go wipe away the impending drool.

20150804_142752Red, yellow, green, and blue…I see a rainbow,  don’t  you? Swish has a good range of colors, even though black still leads the way.

Many of the black handbags can be dated to the 40s and 50 with the very classic style of the time, as influenced by Coco Chanel, Hermès, Prada, and Gucci.

20150804_143411

20150804_143551

Classic  box purses, leather and fabric evening bags, metal and lucite findings, and decorative pieces…you can find it all! This is just a snippet of the black  handbags in  the shop…oh, and they are all on sale right now too!

You can find a beautiful  collection of  white and  beaded bags as well, some dating quite far back, like the 20s.

20150804_142918How perfect are these for a bride? I could imagine carrying something  like the above on my wedding  day.

20150804_142946Swish  has a handful of  divine tapestry bags in immaculate  condition. Tapestry bags were quite popular  in  the  1920s and would  be considered a key fashion  look of the time. One may also  find tapestry bags from the 1950s as they were often given  to gals from their solider boyfriends; they were hence  known as “sweetheart ” bags

20150804_143141Reptile skin become fashionable in the  1940s due to the restriction on leather, as it was to be used for wartime efforts only. Snakeskin was a popular choice among designers.Swish has a few snakeskin  handbags as well as a divine crocodile skin one, which below, is the biggest of the three shown.

20150804_143707Another fun fact of wartime handbags is that many of them were made with gas mask compartments,  so you could  be prepared  no matter  where  you  were. Unfortunately Swish does not have any but wouldn’t  that  be  interesting  to  see?

More beautiful  20s and 30s handbags below.  The  colourful  one is from the 1930s and is in mint condition.  Cloth evening  bags were very in fashion in the  30s, often  made of silk and satin crepe  de  chine, with beading or luxurious details and clasps. The one below is not as fancy as a typical evening bag but it is just beautiful…it is  my favorite  bag in  the shop. The black one below is a typical 1920s evening  bag with the beading and braided rope strap.

20150804_143239The floral tapestry handbags below are reminiscent  of the 50s and 60s. These three are in beautiful  condition and are very feminine purses. Again you see the box shape made popular in the 40s and 50s by influential designers Hermès and Chanel.

20150804_143040Below is a “Dorothy” bag found in Edwardian fashion of the early 1900s. These bags have drawstrings that gather at the top and are typically lavishly beaded. The user of this bag required  very little when going  out…calling cards, a handkerchief,  perhaps a small notepad and a pencil. Sometimes these bags were used in the drawing  room or for evening entertainment. The Dorothy  bag was named after the heroine in A J Munbys 1880 play.

20150804_143838And every  now and again Swish gets in something  unique , interesting,  or strange. Currently  in the  shop there is a Kenyan antelope  fur handbag. I don’t know how old it is, but it is in perfect  condition.

20150804_143755This is just a peak at the amazing collection  of  bags at Swish and she is constantly  bringing in new stock. If you  don’t  live in town head over to the Swish Facebook page  to find out about  ordering possibilities.

Do you carry a vintage  handbag?

Friday Finds: the most exquisite vintage handbag

One of the perks to working at a vintage shop is being surrounded by beautiful things and getting to buy them before anyone else! I am now the owner of the most beautiful vintage handbag I have seen…and I have a feeling it may not have been used, as it is in pristine condition.

While I did not buy this bag the first time I saw it, I had been lusting after it seen first laying eyes on it. I may have even gasped when I saw it on the shelf, sitting there so modestly. I was so surprised it lasted as long as it did in the shop. Each week when I came in for my shift, I would look to see if it was gone yet. I expelled a sign of relief when I saw it had not sold yet.

20150626_084307 (2)

I decided it was finally time to make it mine, when I purchased the Downtown Dames swing dress from Pinup Girl Clothing. I got the dress to wear to see Guys and Dolls. The blue in the handbag was a match to the blue of the dress, so of course I had to finally get it! I can’t believe that I forgot to take a photo of my outfit, so you will just have to wait until next time to see the pairing.

guysanddolls

This handbag was an absolute steal for the condition it was in…which is practically perfect. This is another reason why I was so surprised no one had snatched it up. I got a little discount which made it even sweeter. I plan to only use this beautiful handbag on special occasions, in order to preserve its beauty.

20150626_084357 (2)This divine handbag was purchased at Swish Vintage downtown. Swish has so many gorgeous vintage handbags from the 1920s upwards, all in varying condition; from the ones that have been very loved, to ones that may have only used used once or twice. Go, Kittens, and see  the wonder of vintage handbags at Swish!

Friday Finds: this weeks haul at the thrift store

I have been so darn busy lately that I haven’t had time to go to my favorite thrift shop as much as I would like, but I finally found some time this week!  One of my first stops in the store is the furniture section, where this trip I instantly saw a vintage credenza for only $50…it had a sold tag on it…of course. I let myself feel sad for just a moment and turned away and my eyes instantly found a kidney bean shaped coffee table!!! I have never seen one on real life, I practically ran over, and guess what?! It had a sold sign on it too, as well as the price… 20 freaking dollars. I almost started crying….why have I been so busy lately? why haven’t I been making time to thrift shop? why didn’t I get here sooner? For about the next half an hour, my stomach felt sick, that is until I found knick knacks to take my mind off of the loss. I spent just $19 and came away with an arm load of goodies! My haul consists mostly of vintage knick knacks, which I am in the market for anyway. So here we go, this is what I picked up this round:

A gold letter tray/sorter? I believe that is what this is… this lil guy was only a dollar. Im not sure what I will use it for yet, but I will let you know

20150603_220107 (2)

The next treasure I found was a golden fawn bank, that was made in Japan. I love the kitschy look of this Bambie and would you believe it only cost 50 cents!! This picture does not do it justice.

20150603_215850-1 (2)

This periwinkle blue violin vase can also be hung on the wall, which makes it that much more interesting. I dont have anything like it, but I was drawn to it for some reason.

20150603_215916-1 (2)

20150603_215909 (2)

I found this darling little dish which I thought would be just perfect for holding jewelry, don’t you think?! This was a great find at only $1! And it was made in the USA!

20150603_220325 20150603_220330 (2)

This crystal decanter will look perfect on my little tiki bar. Ive always wanted a fancy decanter to pretend I am suave like those in the golden days. For $4 I could not pass it up.

20150603_215943 (2)

This may be my favorite find of the day… this divine, white and delicate purple floral jar. It was half price, so was only $1.50…and I needed it!! Im not quite sure where I will put it or what I will use it for, so when I figure it out, I’ll post it on instagram ( so keep an eye out for that)

20150603_220041 (2) 20150603_220049 (2)20150603_220029 (2)

And my final find, what seems like a deadstock, suitcase. The inside is pristine, as well as the outside, which is what makes me believe it has never been used. I was on the look out for a suitcase to make into a bed for Cherry ( my boston terrier), but this one is just too perfect to mess around with. I plan to use this guy on weekend getaways…which one day, I may just have time for 😉
