All Natural Pinup: My Favorite Skin Care Products

About 8 months ago, around my birthday, I began getting really bad breakouts. I had never suffered from acne as a teenager and rarely broke out. I always considered my skin to be ‘pretty good’. But of course, when I turn 29, all hell breaks loose! This was also about the time I become interested in using chemical free products – it would be a few months still until I changed my skin care products. But I was determined to get my face under control! I have never been good at covering up blemishes, so to get the pinup up face I wanted, I needed to have clear skin.

11693965_10153051056710872_2183776103872876915_nIf you have used any acne or breakout products, you have to know they are over flowing with chemicals! They smell of pure chemical. And this is not what I want to be putting on my skin. So I searched elsewhere, outside of the drug store, for a chemical and cruelty free product. I had read about Rocky Mountain Soap Company – that they are chemical free, Canadian company, with good practices- so when I stumbled upon them in the mall one day, I stopped in and bought a few items.

11987043_10155993431100008_6424575976049632147_nI was very impressed with the simplicity of their store. Minimal packaging, how it was laid out, things were easy to find, and when I checked out I was given a fancy pamphlet listing “no-no” ingredients that one should look for and avoid in products.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company products are now in my daily regime. My skin is back on track, which means no more breakouts! Oh sure I get the odd blemish here or there, but nothing like what was happening a few months ago.

So, what to know my favorite products?!

Avocado Facial Soap $5.25

indexI use this soap both in the morning and in the evening. It’s a gentle soap, that does not dry out my skin. And for the price, you really cant go wrong

Bamboo Brightening Face Polish $16

scba

I use this polish in the morning ( or in the evening if I have forgotten to use it earlier). It makes my skin feel refreshed and invigorated. It gets rid of all the dead skin and helps clear out my pores

Breakout Buster $9

static1.squarespace.com

This little stick in made anti-bacterial via the tea tree in it. It smells gently of tea tree, and we all know tea tree is a great anti bacterial and anti inflammatory agent. Its used as a spot treatment, so whenever I do have a blemish or feel one coming on, I use this guy, day or night

Beech Tree Bud Eye Cream $35

scec

I also use this amazing eye cream in the morning and the evening, before bed. It is nice and light and also very gentle, which is important for an eye cream.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company has some other products I really want to try, like their cleansers for example, so when I do Ill let you know how I like them!

I do use a few other skin care products from derma-e, aubrey organics, and green beaver, but I am really loving Rocky Mountain stuff right now.

They only have stores in B.C, Alberta, and Manitoba, but you can buy it all online! And, they also send a free gift, usually a whole bar of soap – I love when companies do that.

Like I said, my breakouts are now totally under controlled and my skin is back to normal! No need for chemicals, just all natural goodness!

Danger De Lux loves: Pure Anada

If you’ve been following me on facebook and instagram, and been keeping on  my posts, then you know I’ve switched to chemical free cosmetics. By now I have found a few really great brands and products. One brand which I cannot get enough of is Pure Anada, who are also a Canadian company (bonus!).

Pure Anada is based out of Morden, Manitoba, where they make all the product themselves and have their boutique…which one day I hope to visit! Pure Anada is not a big box company; in fact the founder of this amazing brand is a mother of two with a passion for clean cosmetics. This is what she says about her products:

“Since the inception of Pure Anada, my goal has been to create a natural, safer alternative to traditional, mainstream cosmetics.  I love the beauty of nature, and enjoy the challenge of assembling luxurious, organic ingredients into products for you to enjoy.”

Their products are truly of great quality and are not expensive…which I think is key for a lot of people. You can buy their mascara, for example, for around $14- this is one of the best mascaras I have ever used ( I usually use waterproof but am trying to get away from it); this mascara it light, but you can build it by layering it on; it doesn’t clump or flake off; and it’s paraben and mercury free!

Now, lets talk about ingredients for a minute!  Pure Anada stands proud behind the words: chemical free. Their products do not contain any of the following:

parabens, formaldehyde, petrochemicals, nano/micronized particles, carmine, lakes and dyes, or synthetic fragrances, gluten, or bismuth oxychloride

They use truly natural ingredients in their cosmetics, like mica, jojoba, rice bran wax, olive oil, seseme, coconut, and sweet almond oils. They use plant based minerals and oils and ingredients known to be safe to use on the skin.

Pure Anada is also a cruelty free company!! Which is something I highly support. I think everyone should be using cruelty free products. They have been certified by The Leaping Bunny Program, which sets a standard for companies in order to be certified. Pure Anada also does not buy ingredients from companies who test on animals, so therefore truly are cruelty free.

Danger De Lux shows you how to: make a face mask to treat acne

For some reason lately my skin has been misbehaving! Maybe its getting use to the transition and the new lotions I have been using or maybe i am being reminded this is my last year in my 20’s! Either way I have been breaking out more often than usual as of late, and while this simply will not do, I have looked up home remedies and chemical free treatments.

c826d5f0ebf44df4623c32270efd1d03

A co-worker lent me a great book full of home remedies to treat anything you could think of. It is full of great remedies and recipes but one I have been using as of late is one to treat this silly acne I have been getting. It is so simple and costs basically nothing. It is effective, chemical and cruelty free, and makes my skin feel great

If you have sensitive skin this may not be the best mask for you as the baking soda will  exfoliate to get rid of dry or flaky skin. Apple Cider Vinegar is an astringent that will kill bacteria and draw out impurities, but it may sting just a little, especially when reacting with the baking soda.

What you need:

acv 004

Baking Soda

Apple Cider Vinegar ( I put mine in a small spray bottle to leave in the bathroom)

Water

Vit E oil

What to do

Cleanse face

Make a paste in the palm of your hand or a little bowl with baking soda and little bit of water; adjust accordingly. Apply to your face and leave on for 5 minutes

Rinse off with apple cider vinegar- I use a spray bottle to spray it over my face a few times; a chemical reaction will happen which is kinda fun and super tingly

Rinse off really well with water

Apply a thin layer of vitamin e oil20150306_221409 (2)

After using this mask, my skin feels so refreshed and uber clean. This mask is super easy to make and apply, so there is no reason why you shouldn’t try it! Small steps are still steps in the right direction to eliminating chemicals from your cosmetics and daily routine.

0c0bfb3dfbc6a1628e6f6703ea01b67a

I use this mask at least once a week to help control my acne and so far it has been working quite nicely. You can control what you use on you skin, what you buy, and who you support! Treat yourself to some chemical and cruelty free beauty regimes!

Let me know if you try it and what you think

What’s in Your Makeup Bag: Danger De Lux Revisited

I wanted to do another and final “whats in your makeup bag”, featuring my makeup bag again. Since my first post, I have changed most of the makeup I use, as I have been transitioning into a chemical free lifestyle. Its a sad truth that the makeup we use it chalk full of chemicals that are very harmful to our bodies. Its also a sad truth that most of use don’t even think twice before buying and using chemical laden products and cosmetics. I posted not too long ago about a book I read, There’s lead in your Lipstick by Gill Deacon, which opened my eyes to the harm of every day cosmetics. Since then, I have begun replacing all the products I use with ones that are chemical free. I have almost finished replacing all my makeup, which has proven to be the hardest part. I have found some really great, quality, chemical and cruelty free cosmetics that have now become part of my everyday beauty regime. You cannot find these products at the drug store or even Sephora; I’ve purchased them at my local organic grocery store and online at well.ca, which offers a ton of great chemical free options, at great prices ( plus if you spend $25 or more, you get free shipping).

1506989_10152608319530872_1073914276374264163_nI’d say about 90% of the makeup I use every day is chemical free, which means it doesn’t contain any sulphates, parabens, talcs, plastics, fragrance, pthalates, SLS, mercury or lead. By default it is also all natural, usually organic, and always cruelty free. I can feel good knowing I am not putting toxins into my blood stream or harming my organs with the cosmetics I am using. I am still using some of the cosmetics I had before, as I do not want to be wasteful or toss it out to simply harm the environment. The tranisition has been long and it is still continuing. Some items, like eyeliner and eye brow products, which are the most important to me, are harder to find;I need a good quality eyeliner and brown pencil to achieve my look, so I am still on the hunt for those.

Here is all the makeup I currently use

20150215_162252 (2)Pacifica Eyeshadow pallets – still in need of more colours though, especially browns, which is what I usually use

Pure Anada Mascara ( a Canadian Company)- while I usually opt for a water proof mascara, that is something I will probably have to give up. This mascara is really nice; its doesn’t clump, but goes on really smooth and is very black.

Pacifica eye highlighter

Pure Anada Foundation – very light and not cakey at all! I apply mine with a foundation sponge.

Pure Anada mineral bronzer – one of the nicest bronzers I’ve used to date; I know not everyone uses a bronzer, but I feel like with my freckles, its needed and looks nice.

Physcians Formula Mineral Powder – I need to replace this though, as Physicians forumla isn’t actually organic, despite it saying so ( companies are allowed to lie about being organic or all natural)

Annabelle Eyebrow pencil –  I need to replace this as well

Anastasia eyebrow pomade and shawdow- this stuff is great and is cruelty free, just not chemical free.

Pacificia finshing powder

Maybelline cream eyeliner and felt eyeliner – I ran out of mine and needed one quick, so both of these will get replaced when they run out

20150215_162136 (2)

Aubrey Moisturizer – which I love! It has the slightest scent and is one of the best moisturizers I’ve used.

Pacifica CC Cream with spf 17

20150215_162511 (2) 20150215_162549 (2)

20150215_162805 (2)

Beseme Lipsticks in Cherry Red, Red Velvet, and Dusty Rose –  I love beseme but once these are done, I probably wont use them again; they are cruelty free, but not chemical free

Boho Cosmetics in Capucine (light pink) and Groseille; I also have two lip liners from Boho, as this company is all natural. These lipsticks are also quite nice and have good staying power, especially with a liner

Green Beaver lip glosses ( a Canadian company) – these have great colour, are not sticky, and are pretty top notch for lip glosses

20150215_162652 (2)Pacifica Perfume- made with essential oils and not synthetic fragrances, cruelty free, vegan, paraben free, and made with just a handful of ingredients. Look at the ingredients list of your perfume and you will likely not recognize most of the ingredients.

20150207_111348 (2)Snapshot_20150216_6

I’ve heard some people say its hard to buy cruelty free, which would mean chemical free is even harder to buy… it is and it isn’t. Like I mentioned, you will not find this stuff at Sephora or the drug store, so it isn’t convenient to get. But it is worth the extra trip to the organ market to get it. Or order it online like I do, from Well.ca

The brands to look for are: Pure Anada, Green Beaver, Pacifica, Boho, Earth Lab, Gabriel, Sante, Weleda, Audrey, and Dr. Hauschka. Don’t be fooled by brands pretending to be organic or all natural. The regulations for this kind of branding isn’t really protected. Any brand can say they are all natural or organic if they have one, miniscule ingredient which is. Garnier Fructis advertises organic products, which are anything but. Be a smart consumer and know what ingredients are in a product. The chemicals and toxins found in most common cosmetics are known to cause cancer and other ailments; most of these products are also tested on animals, for no good reason.

Danger De Lux goes all natural

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have noticed lately I have been posting about natural cosmetics…face wash, feminine products, shampoo, toothpaste, perfume…. It is all because I read a book I had heard about years ago. I saw it in the Library last month and figured I may as well read it ( I love to read, btw). The book that has changed every thing for me was There is Lead in Your Lipstick by Gillian Deacon… Now I know it sounds silly to say one book has changed my whole perspective on makeup and toiletries, but it completely opened my eyes to how much chemicals are in our beauty products and how most companies are lying to us about the ingredients they are using.

lipstick-coverCompanies are allowed to say they are all natural or use natural ingredients even if they arn’t or don’t. Cosmetic companies are allowed to use ingredients that cause cancer and illness and sometimes don’t even list this ingredients. There is some special loop hole that a product with a scent can simply list perfume or fragrance, as it is the brands ” secret scent”….one which is usually laden with chemicals. It’s a shame because so many people believe companies when they say they are natural or organic, when most of the time its a lie, or perhaps one or two ingredients are natural. I think it is important to know what you are putting on your body and essentially in your body as your skin absorbs all those chemicals.

cosmetics-inline-5Some of the most common chemicals in cosmetics include SLS, parabens, phthalates, tar, formaldehyde, and well, I could go on. In the very basic form of it, these toxins cause cancer, hormone disruption, damage to vital organs such as the liver, etc. It’s really scary when you think about it… How many chemicals are you using every day? Gillian Deacon states that the average women uses/applies 126 chemicals before leaving the house each day. I am not okay with this and that is why I am changing my entire beauty and body care regime. I poured out most of my old chemical filled products and have replaced them with homemade ones or truly 100% natural, chemical free ones.

dangers_of_lipstick_heavy_metalsThe cosmetics industry is not required to prove an ingredient is safe for human health before it is used in a consumer producthttp://www.gilldeacon.ca/projects-lipstick.php

I have switched about half or more of my products over to 100% natural, and while yes, some are more expensive ( like deodorant and toothpaste)  I have found some great deals and quality products at great prices. Thus far I have been shopping at Planet Organic ( my local organic grocery store) and Well.ca. Planet Organic carries essential oils and all the ingredients to make my own products- and they often have products on sale or offer 10% customer appreciation days. Well.ca offers free shipping on orders over $25 and are always having sales. I have found great products at both of these places without breaking the bank. All the products are also Cruelty Free, which is something I think is very important- no animals should have to suffer for our vanity…ever!

lead-in-lipstickI highly recommend you all read There’s Lead in Your Lipstick by G. Deacon and really think about what you are putting on and in your body. Keep an eye out for more posts on specific products and beauty rituals- shampoo and hair washing. nail polish. feminine products. getting a pinup look with all natural makeup. perfume…oh goodness how I love perfume!

why shopping local matters

As I grow older, I think more consciously about my purchases- do i really need this? can I afford it? is it cruelty- free? is is organic or natural? could i find this somewhere local? I live in a bustling neighborhood- the hot spot of the city, if you will. Because of my locale it makes it easier to buy local and support independent business. Almost every thing  I need I can find in my community.

LOCO_Buy-Local_Infographic1-e1368214478188

There are three groceries stores in a 10 block radius- two of them being organic. I buy the majority of my clothing at the store I work at, which is an independently owned and run shop. I buy all my toiletries at the pharmacy in my neighborhood. I go to the yoga studio and gym near by. I buy all my book at the book stores a few blocks away or go to the library literally 2 blocks from my apartment. You get the idea.

When I see something in the mall I know I could also get at an independent retailer, I will usually wait to buy it. While I do occasionally shop at box stores, I prefer not to. Sometimes it will cost more to shop at a small business, but think about how your money is helping them and the neighborhood they are in thrive. Shopping local helps build the community, creates jobs, fuels the economy, and keeps small businesses open. When I buy produce at the Farmers Market I am giving my money to a person and not a corporation, I am helping to ensure they can keep growing the vegetables they do, I am eating seasonally ( which is so good for our bodies), I know I am buying quality products, and I supporting the endeavors of others in my community.

abe05290652e90c79e4ad716f8d67277As I mentioned, I work at a small, independent store, which sells rockabilly, pin-up, and vintage reproduction. I have heard many times, customers say they just want to try an item on so they can go buy it online or they saw it cheaper on line, so they refuse to buy it at the store. Blank stare. You’re kidding right? When people shop online they are NOT supporting their own community and in the long run, they are contributing to putting independent companies out of business. Yah, sometimes you can find something cheaper on line, but after the shipping and the possible duties, you don’t save much. Not only is it important to shop local, but if you do shop online, shop Canadian.

keep-it-local-logo-conceptsI can’t say I shop local 100% of the time or I buy from Canadian websites all of the time, but I do make the effort to do so. I think we all should. Why wouldn’t you want to support your own economy- the one you are directly effected by. I know that money sometimes is the issue…it is cheaper to shop at Walmart or a big box store than a small grocer or independent pet store, etc. Do some comparison shopping, sign up for newsletters, watch for sales, and get a ‘reward’ card.

I plan to compile a more complete list of Canadian companies and local, for Edmonton, companies, but here is a small start:

Barefoot Venus- made in Kelowna, British Columbia

Rowena and Retroglam.com– Edmonton, Alberta

Wild Prairie Natural Skin Care– Canadian made natural soap and other body care

Lux Beauty Bar–  boutique selling cosmetics and other beauty products in Edmonton, AB

Keep an eye out for a more complete list and feel free to comment with some Canadian companies you love!

Barefoot Venus: making your skin silky smooth, the natural way

I first fell for Barefoot Venus a few years ago, when a good friend gifted me some of their luxurious lotion for my birthday. I am a sucker for anything natural, organic, or cruelty free…In fact, I tcruelty-free-beauty-300x336hink every one should be. I don’t believe animals should suffer so we can wear pretty lipsticks and eyeshadow, wash our hair and face, or indulge in body lotions. We can do all of those things with products that are cruelty free, by companies who have a conscious and are able to provide outstanding products without harming animal.

Barefoot Venus makes a wide variety of products: body lotion, facial cleansers, body wash, bubble bath and salts, lip balms, hand and foot lotions, and more. Their products are made without parabens, sulfates, synthetic colours, propylene glycol, all those unnecessary unnatural ingredients. Instead, Barefoot Venus uses shea and cocoa butter, natural fruit and herb oils and extracts, green tea, and all the yummy, natural things. You can feel the difference when using this product. Their body lotions are so rich and actually moisturizing; when using a drugstore lotion, they feel sparse and watery and not at all moisturizing.

index4444

Barefoot Venus is also made in Canada! I rejoice when I can find a quality product I love and in purchasing it can support the economy I live in.

17_large_2_largeNot only does Barefoot Venus have an amazing product, they have the cutest packaging! A bunch of their products feature adorable pinup girls… how perfect! With scents like Vanilla Shake, Lemon Freckle, Coconut Kiss, Hunny Mango, and Wild Ginger & Sweet Orange, there is something to delight everyone. Just listing all the scents is making my mouth water… goodness me, I need to get more Barefoot Venus lotions and quick! Barefoot Venus also makes for a delightful gift for birthdays, weddings showers or gifts, for the hard to buy for, for the just because, for gift exchanges…for any occasion.

Barefoot Venus is just divine, plain and simple. And what pin-up girl does not want to feel divine?

vanilla_bliss_largeoat_soak_web_large

I can’t stress enough how important I think it is to buy cruelty free and natural products. Yes, they are more expensive, sometimes significantly, so they can be a luxury. That being said you can definitely find makeup, soaps, tooth pastes, and cleansers for a similar price to the unethical ones society has accepted as the norm. In regards to body lotions like Barefoot Venus, you use less of the products because it works so well, so it will last longer. And if it is still out of your budget… you can also ask for it for your birthday or Christmas, like I will be doing this year! Or you can use the coupon code Barefoot Venus has so graciously offered for my lovely readers! Head over to their website and at the checkout use the coupon code: DDELUX-01P. This code will get you 15% off your order, but hurry, it expires October 31st, 2014

Barefoot Venus has a website where you can buy of their lovely products. If you live in Edmonton, you can find it at When Pigs Fly on Whyte Ave. The Barefoot Venus website also has a store locator, so you can find out who sells it in your town.
