What I Wore: 1970s Italian Swing Skirt

Swish Vintage has stolen my heart. I can not walk in there without finding some treasure or another that I have to make mine. This time it was a skirt on a mannequin in the window. A wrap swing skirt, black with little white flowers, red lining along the inside, and a very full skirt -no crinoline necessary, only if you really want it.

70s12

This skirt was apparently handmade in Italy in the 70s. The construction is divine and it is in mint condition. I can not believe I scored this skirt and that no one else had snatched it up yet! It fits me perfectly too…it was fate! Its a very 50s style which is why I love it so much!

I wore it last Saturday when the sun was shinning and it was a beautiful early summer day. I headed down to a local park to soak up some rays and took advantage of the sunshine to snap a few photos…not the best, but they will do!70s32This is the perfect summer skirt. I know I am going to wear it all season long and then into the winter with tick tights and boots. I would probably style it a bit different if I were heading out with some gals or painting the town red (as I do) however this particular Saturday was a lazy, relaxed kind of day, to which this skirt was perfect for.

70s3

The red lining makes it fun to style. I wore a chunky vintage red bracelet, a german made brooch, and red hair flowers.

70s4Edmonton guys and gals, you have to go check out Swish Vintage this summer….My goodness, she has beautiful pieces in right now that will not wait around for you!

Swish Picks: Mod-ly In Love

Swish Picks  is a new weekly ( sometimes bi-weekly) feature on some of the amazing pieces found at Swish Vintage. I am constantly being blown away by the amazing pieces the owner finds. Every week when I go in for my shift, there is always something new that takes my breathe away. This weeks post was inspired by a beautiful psychedelic 60s mod dress that was on one of the mannequins. And so, the first Swish Picks is full of fantastic mod dresses and accessories, only available at Swish Vintage.

No outfit would be complete without accessories. 1960s accessories are very fun and bright, with interesting textures. Swish has the most vintage hats I have ever seen and probably ever will see. I picked out three to show which are pretty mod and very fun.

This hat is made of dyed Marabou feathers. It is so soft and fluffy too!

Friday Finds: the most exquisite vintage handbag

One of the perks to working at a vintage shop is being surrounded by beautiful things and getting to buy them before anyone else! I am now the owner of the most beautiful vintage handbag I have seen…and I have a feeling it may not have been used, as it is in pristine condition.

While I did not buy this bag the first time I saw it, I had been lusting after it seen first laying eyes on it. I may have even gasped when I saw it on the shelf, sitting there so modestly. I was so surprised it lasted as long as it did in the shop. Each week when I came in for my shift, I would look to see if it was gone yet. I expelled a sign of relief when I saw it had not sold yet.

20150626_084307 (2)

I decided it was finally time to make it mine, when I purchased the Downtown Dames swing dress from Pinup Girl Clothing. I got the dress to wear to see Guys and Dolls. The blue in the handbag was a match to the blue of the dress, so of course I had to finally get it! I can’t believe that I forgot to take a photo of my outfit, so you will just have to wait until next time to see the pairing.

guysanddolls

This handbag was an absolute steal for the condition it was in…which is practically perfect. This is another reason why I was so surprised no one had snatched it up. I got a little discount which made it even sweeter. I plan to only use this beautiful handbag on special occasions, in order to preserve its beauty.

20150626_084357 (2)This divine handbag was purchased at Swish Vintage downtown. Swish has so many gorgeous vintage handbags from the 1920s upwards, all in varying condition; from the ones that have been very loved, to ones that may have only used used once or twice. Go, Kittens, and see  the wonder of vintage handbags at Swish!

Pinup Couture: Make me Blush

Pinup Couture really hit it out of the park with this gorgeous blush halter swing dress. It oozes Hollywood glamor of the Monroe era. The fabric is so silky and luxurious; it hangs beautifully; it is smooth and velvety; it is perfection.

11009487_901327579887380_1447437912_o (2)I felt just like Marilyn Monroe when I put it on. In fact, I said, get me a heating grate to stand over! I want to be just like Marilyn!

This dress is a beautiful blush champagne colour – it is sweetly and gently pink. It has a huge skirt, which means there is tons of room for crinoline. I am only wearing one, but if this dress is worn by a bride or to a prom, it could easily fit a few crinolines. The bust line has plenty of pleats to accentuate the bust

11001085_901327566554048_1570387324_o (2)I was shocked when I saw the price tag of this beauty. It is only $138! This is an insane deal, considering the detail and weight of the piece and of course, it is made in the United States, which means it is a quality garment.

I fit a medium in the blush halter, I measure 37-30-41 and it was a perfect fit for me. This dress runs fairly true to size, so you should be fine to order your usual size. You can find this beauty at RetroGlam.com  and at Rowena.

I didn’t get many photos in it, so had to search the internet for a few more photos to share with you. If ever you wanted to feel like a vintage Hollywood starlet, this is the dress to do it!

What’s in Your Makeup Bag: Danger De Lux Revisited

I wanted to do another and final “whats in your makeup bag”, featuring my makeup bag again. Since my first post, I have changed most of the makeup I use, as I have been transitioning into a chemical free lifestyle. Its a sad truth that the makeup we use it chalk full of chemicals that are very harmful to our bodies. Its also a sad truth that most of use don’t even think twice before buying and using chemical laden products and cosmetics. I posted not too long ago about a book I read, There’s lead in your Lipstick by Gill Deacon, which opened my eyes to the harm of every day cosmetics. Since then, I have begun replacing all the products I use with ones that are chemical free. I have almost finished replacing all my makeup, which has proven to be the hardest part. I have found some really great, quality, chemical and cruelty free cosmetics that have now become part of my everyday beauty regime. You cannot find these products at the drug store or even Sephora; I’ve purchased them at my local organic grocery store and online at well.ca, which offers a ton of great chemical free options, at great prices ( plus if you spend $25 or more, you get free shipping).

1506989_10152608319530872_1073914276374264163_nI’d say about 90% of the makeup I use every day is chemical free, which means it doesn’t contain any sulphates, parabens, talcs, plastics, fragrance, pthalates, SLS, mercury or lead. By default it is also all natural, usually organic, and always cruelty free. I can feel good knowing I am not putting toxins into my blood stream or harming my organs with the cosmetics I am using. I am still using some of the cosmetics I had before, as I do not want to be wasteful or toss it out to simply harm the environment. The tranisition has been long and it is still continuing. Some items, like eyeliner and eye brow products, which are the most important to me, are harder to find;I need a good quality eyeliner and brown pencil to achieve my look, so I am still on the hunt for those.

Here is all the makeup I currently use

20150215_162252 (2)Pacifica Eyeshadow pallets – still in need of more colours though, especially browns, which is what I usually use

Pure Anada Mascara ( a Canadian Company)- while I usually opt for a water proof mascara, that is something I will probably have to give up. This mascara is really nice; its doesn’t clump, but goes on really smooth and is very black.

Pacifica eye highlighter

Pure Anada Foundation – very light and not cakey at all! I apply mine with a foundation sponge.

Pure Anada mineral bronzer – one of the nicest bronzers I’ve used to date; I know not everyone uses a bronzer, but I feel like with my freckles, its needed and looks nice.

Physcians Formula Mineral Powder – I need to replace this though, as Physicians forumla isn’t actually organic, despite it saying so ( companies are allowed to lie about being organic or all natural)

Annabelle Eyebrow pencil –  I need to replace this as well

Anastasia eyebrow pomade and shawdow- this stuff is great and is cruelty free, just not chemical free.

Pacificia finshing powder

Maybelline cream eyeliner and felt eyeliner – I ran out of mine and needed one quick, so both of these will get replaced when they run out

20150215_162136 (2)

Aubrey Moisturizer – which I love! It has the slightest scent and is one of the best moisturizers I’ve used.

Pacifica CC Cream with spf 17

20150215_162511 (2) 20150215_162549 (2)

20150215_162805 (2)

Beseme Lipsticks in Cherry Red, Red Velvet, and Dusty Rose –  I love beseme but once these are done, I probably wont use them again; they are cruelty free, but not chemical free

Boho Cosmetics in Capucine (light pink) and Groseille; I also have two lip liners from Boho, as this company is all natural. These lipsticks are also quite nice and have good staying power, especially with a liner

Green Beaver lip glosses ( a Canadian company) – these have great colour, are not sticky, and are pretty top notch for lip glosses

20150215_162652 (2)Pacifica Perfume- made with essential oils and not synthetic fragrances, cruelty free, vegan, paraben free, and made with just a handful of ingredients. Look at the ingredients list of your perfume and you will likely not recognize most of the ingredients.

20150207_111348 (2)Snapshot_20150216_6

I’ve heard some people say its hard to buy cruelty free, which would mean chemical free is even harder to buy… it is and it isn’t. Like I mentioned, you will not find this stuff at Sephora or the drug store, so it isn’t convenient to get. But it is worth the extra trip to the organ market to get it. Or order it online like I do, from Well.ca

The brands to look for are: Pure Anada, Green Beaver, Pacifica, Boho, Earth Lab, Gabriel, Sante, Weleda, Audrey, and Dr. Hauschka. Don’t be fooled by brands pretending to be organic or all natural. The regulations for this kind of branding isn’t really protected. Any brand can say they are all natural or organic if they have one, miniscule ingredient which is. Garnier Fructis advertises organic products, which are anything but. Be a smart consumer and know what ingredients are in a product. The chemicals and toxins found in most common cosmetics are known to cause cancer and other ailments; most of these products are also tested on animals, for no good reason.

Fall for B.A.I.T this Autumn

Rowena just got in a new shipment of B.A.I.T for the fall season. And I fell hard.  I can usually take or leave a lot of shoes…I am being more picky these days with the ones I do buy- they have to be practical, comfortable, stylish, and good quality. As we unpacked the new shipment of B.A.I.T, I squeed at each and every style.

BAIT AND BANNED 014B.A.I.T is known for making very cute, retro inspired shoes, which are comfortable and reasonably priced. Rowena always carries a handful of the cutest styles, that everyone falls for. I took home a pair with me the same day they came in and I don’t expect these styles to stick around long.

Alright, lets break it down…

The Valentine comes in black and burgandy and are just divine!

BAIT AND BANNED 002 BAIT AND BANNED 005BAIT AND BANNED 004These have a little higher heel than the other styles and are very sleek. As a dressier shoes, these are perfect for the upcoming holiday and party season

Next, my favorite, the Roberta

BAIT AND BANNED 008 BAIT AND BANNED 009These have a thick heel and are so comfortable. I wore them all day three days in a row and they were fine! Nice and comfy, just how I like my shoes to be. These are just adorable little mary-jane style heels, which look super cute with a swing skirt.

Last,  the Hazels are a great pair of boots for the fall.

BAIT AND BANNED 010 BAIT AND BANNED 012These boots have a great Victorian look to them and are are very comfortable. They have a zipper along the inside and are laced up the front. What I loved most about these boots is that they fit my calves- this is very rare and I know I am not the only one. These are the perfect boots for the gals who have wide calves; I even had room to spare, which means these boots are guaranteed to fit the biggest of calves. These also have a thick heel, which make them easier to walk in and very wearable.

BAIT AND BANNED 001Come on down to Rowena and check out the great selection of B.A.I.T and all the other great shoes in stock for the season. And don’t forget to shop local – get these new B.A.I.T shoes at Rowena instead of online and if you don’t live in town, give the shop a call and pay over the phone to have them shipped out to you.

Banned Apparel: Sweet and Simple

I first saw Banned in the London Edge trade show catalog…. A model was holding the most gorgeous flamingo purse; I looked at the small print and saw the brand was Banned Apparel. Fast forward a few months and I am unpacking a new shipment from a new brand at Rowena. That brand was Banned Apparel.

BAIT AND BANNED 022Banned Apparel is based out of the UK and is the result of the dismemberment of Living Dead Souls. While some of their stuff is alternative/gothic style clothing… some of it is amazing retro reproduction. The cardigans I have seen are just beautiful – the appliques, the detailing, and the fabric are all very pretty and have a vintage touch to them. They are so sweet and so simple – just what every pin up girl needs. But what I was most looking forward to was that handbag that initially caught my attention.

BAIT AND BANNED 021

Are they not just the most beautiful handbag you have ever seen…well, pretty close anyway. They are even better in person. And they are so functional. They actually open up fairly wide, have a few compartments, zip closed, have a handle and a cross body strap. And they are only $63! I may have just have to get all three colours… that’s normal right?

We filmed a little video at Rowena yesterday, to show off all the new Banned we got in. This is my first video like this- usually I’m doing my hair or showing exercises- so please don’t judge my slight awkwardness 😉

I plan on doing a lot more videos like this one, so keep an eye out for those or give me suggestions for things you would like to see.

A big thank you to my lovely co-workers who helped to the video- you gals are the best…for real!

BAIT AND BANNED 020( look how pretty my co-worker is!)

Come into Rowena and pick up a cardigan and matching handbag or head to RetroGlam.com to get yours! Flat rate shipping in Canada is available for $8, so really there is no reason not to order!

And here is our little video!
