Vertigo Go Designs: an Edmonton retro designer

On Saturday I went over my gal pals house to check out some of her amazing mod designs! I tried on a few styles she had already made and picked out the fabric for my party dress! Nicole A Go Go is an Edmonton based designer, who focuses on mod, retro styles, bringing life back to old patterns and fabrics. You can find her designs at Vertigo Go, plus read about her adventures in fashion!

Nicole A Go Go was nice enough to let me snap a few photos of her studio to share with you! She uses really fun fabrics in bright colours and fun patterns! 20160116_134506You will find lots of flowers, polka dots, hounds-tooth, and geometric prints! Expect to see mini skirts and dresses, cropped tops with matching skirts, faux fur bubble gum pink swing coats, playsuits, and more!

20160116_134418Nicole had a few outfits set aside for me, plus laid out a some fabrics for me to choose from. Once we figured out what fit me, I picked out my favorite fabric for my mod party dress! She had also picked out an orange mini skirt for me to try and is now going to make me a pencil skirt out of the same fabric. I am so excited to share my custom pieces with you when they are finished!

20160116_134355Vertigo Go designs makes affordable, quality, slow fashion pieces, to brighten up your wardrobe! She does custom work, as well, so if there is something you would really love to have, she can make it for you; she has made previous clients gorgeous play suits, mod dresses, and playboy bunny costumes.

20160116_134913I really want to focus on building a wardrobe full of quality pieces, that mean something to me and are going to stand the test of time. The longer I work at the mall, the more contempt I have for fast fashion. I want to support local shops and designers whenever I can. I want to spend more time shopping for vintage pieces and making the best choices for my budget and style. Nicole is making me a dress, a skirt, and a little something for Cherry for the cost of an outsourced dress from Guess or Aritzia. I am really excited and can’t wait to show you all when it is finished!!

Swish Picks  is a new weekly ( sometimes bi-weekly) feature on some of the amazing pieces found at Swish Vintage. I am constantly being blown away by the amazing pieces the owner finds. Every week when I go in for my shift, there is always something new that takes my breathe away. This weeks post was inspired by a beautiful psychedelic 60s mod dress that was on one of the mannequins. And so, the first Swish Picks is full of fantastic mod dresses and accessories, only available at Swish Vintage.

If this one would have fit my hips it would have been mine!! Made with black velvet, this piece would fit a modern day medium, so long as they have small than 40″ hips.

No outfit would be complete without accessories. 1960s accessories are very fun and bright, with interesting textures. Swish has the most vintage hats I have ever seen and probably ever will see. I picked out three to show which are pretty mod and very fun.

This hat is made of dyed Marabou feathers. It is so soft and fluffy too!

Beautiful and bright brooches to add to a collar, lapel, jacket, or cardigan.

And of course, no mod girls outfit is complete without a scarf, which Swish has an endless supply of. 20150630_141133 (2)While Swish does not have a website ( yet) I bet you can call or email the store and if you ask nicely, they may ship it out to you!!

Head over to their facebook page for all the contact info

Keep an eye out for more Swish picks in the near future! Next up will be Western Wear!!

what i wore: heartbreaker doreen

I fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it- the cut and the pattern, it was the perfect combination. But as luck would have it, both mediums were snatched up, so I had to wait patiently for it to come, special order for me. This dress is perfectly mod and so flattering and on lots of different body shapes too.

HEARTBREAKER 018

Like I mentioned above, I got a medium and it fits like a glove. The cut is so nice and I feel terrific in it. Its fun and flirty without being to risqué, so its the perfect little mod dress. There are so other patterns- plaid, an atomic, and black and white “optic”. The cosmic dot was my favorite, but I do have my eye on the black and white one. There is a tie in the back for that extra cinched waist look, that every gal wants.

I wore the Doreen to work the other day with a pair of black wedges and did my hair up in a messy mini beehive with a big turquoise flower in the back. I felt like a 60’s gal for sure.

I got mine at Rowena– they still have them in stock if you’re in the market for a super cute mod dress. This exact style is not on RetroGlam.com but they have a ton of other Heartbreaker styles.

Also check out the Heartbreaker website to see all the styles they offer.
