Vertigo Go Designs: an Edmonton retro designer

On Saturday I went over my gal pals house to check out some of her amazing mod designs! I tried on a few styles she had already made and picked out the fabric for my party dress! Nicole A Go Go is an Edmonton based designer, who focuses on mod, retro styles, bringing life back to old patterns and fabrics. You can find her designs at Vertigo Go, plus read about her adventures in fashion!

Nicole A Go Go was nice enough to let me snap a few photos of her studio to share with you! She uses really fun fabrics in bright colours and fun patterns! 20160116_134506You will find lots of flowers, polka dots, hounds-tooth, and geometric prints! Expect to see mini skirts and dresses, cropped tops with matching skirts, faux fur bubble gum pink swing coats, playsuits, and more!

20160116_134418Nicole had a few outfits set aside for me, plus laid out a some fabrics for me to choose from. Once we figured out what fit me, I picked out my favorite fabric for my mod party dress! She had also picked out an orange mini skirt for me to try and is now going to make me a pencil skirt out of the same fabric. I am so excited to share my custom pieces with you when they are finished!

20160116_134355Vertigo Go designs makes affordable, quality, slow fashion pieces, to brighten up your wardrobe! She does custom work, as well, so if there is something you would really love to have, she can make it for you; she has made previous clients gorgeous play suits, mod dresses, and playboy bunny costumes.

20160116_134913I really want to focus on building a wardrobe full of quality pieces, that mean something to me and are going to stand the test of time. The longer I work at the mall, the more contempt I have for fast fashion. I want to support local shops and designers whenever I can. I want to spend more time shopping for vintage pieces and making the best choices for my budget and style. Nicole is making me a dress, a skirt, and a little something for Cherry for the cost of an outsourced dress from Guess or Aritzia. I am really excited and can’t wait to show you all when it is finished!!

Swish Picks: We’ve Hit the Jackpot!

Have I a great Swish Picks for you this week!  Swish has hit the 80s earring jackpot! My goodness, if I could wear earrings ( mine are stretched) half of them would be mine! All of these earrings came from one miraculous and organized lady. They came in sectioned containers and were colour coded! Colour coded!! I counted believe my eyes – a hundred pairs, if not more!

20150908_122256Of course, there were tacky, over the top pairs, but most were quite spectacular. Many were 80’s does 50s, others were gloriously and unapologetically 80s.

20150908_122418Ive snapped photos of my absolute favorites. But really, if you are in Edmonton, you should go rummage through the marvelous collection yourself!

Nautical realness

20150908_122646These pink ones are too much!! I love them all…I would buy them all of I could wear them!! But because I cant, you should all go buy them up and flaunt them for me!! Those faux wooden ones on the bottom right scream tiki pinup! Pair them with a killer hawiian wiggle dress and bam! Tiki babe!!

20150908_12283120150908_12390220150908_123706Eeee, aren’t they delightful!!

These hoops are so fly! Like mega 80s urban girl!

20150908_123404

This picture does not accurately show just how big those gold jeweled ones are. They are pretty serious earrings, for a pretty serious girl!

20150908_123220

I was able to pick out two pairs of hoops, similar to those below, that I can wear through tunnels, so I am pumped about that!

20150908_123558There were a whole ton of black and white ones; the ones below are my favorite of the bunch  – very typical 80s styles.

20150908_124022And these fun, colourful, floral ones, which if styled right could be the perfect 50s earring.

20150908_124129

This was just a tiny snippet of the glory of this collection! Okay and the best part?! They are only $10 a pair! What?! Yes!!

I am way too excited about this magnificent collection and the organizer in me, loves how well this lady organized them all. I spent way too much time looking at all, and I mean all, of the earrings…and then looking at them all over again.

20150908_122250How do you store your jewelry?! And could you imagine owning this many pairs of earrings?!

No outfit would be complete without accessories. 1960s accessories are very fun and bright, with interesting textures. Swish has the most vintage hats I have ever seen and probably ever will see. I picked out three to show which are pretty mod and very fun.

20150630_130829 (2)

This hat is made of dyed Marabou feathers. It is so soft and fluffy too!

No holiday ensemble is complete without the right accessories….from hair flowers and fasinators to handbags and heels.

Rowena always has the best and biggest selection of handbags and what I have here is only a tiny piece of the selection available in store and online.

Sourpuss has come out with some adorable handbags, which retail at amazingly low prices! These are in their Bettie Page line so are extra glam!

These handbags come in: black, gold, oxblood, and bubblegum pink and in two sizes!

sppu56_cover_girl_purse_black_1sppu52_ceterfold_purse_gold_1indexkkkkkkTatyana has made a divine coffin shaped vintage inspired handbag, that I drool over every time I see it. You can’t see it in the photo below but there are copper flecks in the black, which makes this retro handbag even more delicious!

Lux De Ville has come out with limited edition flame diablo darling clutches which I can not get enough of. These clutches are the perfect size too- big enough to fit more than just your lipstick and phone, but still compact enough to not take up too much room; the handle is a great size too and actually functional. If you have your eye on one of these, snatch it up quick, because they are  limited addition. You can find them in the store or for phone order.

Trashy Diva- the perfect black dress

Trashy Diva makes gorgeous dresses, in fantastic fabrics and patterns. I know of many girls who lust after Trashy Diva dresses because of their vintage look and appeal. I feel in love with the Deb dress instantly. Never has a dress felt more perfect- the fit is amazing, the fabric thick and beautiful, and the cut is very feminine. I imagine Audrey Hepburn might have worn something much like the Deb.

A few weeks ago I did a photo shoot with Photography by Safauna. I chose to wear the Deb dress because it is so classic and I feel amazing in it. The shots she sent me from our shoot  blew me away.

_DSC1116-Edit_DSC1124-Edit

I am wearing an 8 in the Deb and like I said, it fits like a glove. My measurements for comparison are: 36-29-40.

_DSC1129-EditI got my Trashy Diva Deb at Rowena in Edmonton. They still have a few in the shop and online at RetroGlam.com. The quality and fabulousness of this dress is worth every single penny, so brake open your piggy bank and snatch one up for yourself. This is the perfect little black swing dress. This beauty can be worn to an event, a celebration or party, a wedding, grad, or holiday party, a night out with the girls or out to dinner with your fella…the options are endless!

Pinup Girl Clothing- The Lydia

The new Lydia by Pinup Girl Clothing is to die for. The design and cut of this dress is amazing. I have not been so excited for a dress in quite some time. My co-workers and myself went gaga for the Lydia in the Burlesque print. None of us could wait to try it on and almost all of us bought one.

indexThe border features a curvacious burlesque dancer doing a little striptease The colour combination of pink, blue, and black are perfect and really pop.

pc-lydia-bur_fI do not own anything like the Lydia…not even close. This dress shines in my closet and I feel so pretty when I wear it. I am so lucky to work with a lovely photographer, who snapped a few photos of me and my Lydia.

_DSC1100-Edit

Look at those colours!

_DSC1106-Edit

I almost always wear a medium in Pinup Girl Clothing, but had to size up in the Lydia to a large. My measurements are: 36-29-40. The large fit me good and I feel good in it. A few of my co-workers had to size up as well, while a couple were able to fit in their usual size. If you’re unsure of fit, please ask and I’ll help you out!

You can get your very own Lydia at Rowena in Edmonton or online at RetroGlam.com
