Saying Goodbye…

I’m sure most of you know that for the past three years I have  been working at one of the top rockabilly and pinup shops in Canada (and arguably  North America) and for the last 2 of those years I have been the manager, putting my heart and soul into Rowena. If you follow my Facebook  page you would have seen  my posts about how I was leaving and to come say goodbye. After three long years, it was time to move on. So with a lot of excitement and a little sadness, I am saying goodbye to Rowena, my home for the past three years. I graduated from school about a year ago and have found a potentially amazing job in my field. I’ve traded in my novelty print skirts, leopard print, and tight, low cut tops for running shoes, yoga pants, sports bras, and racer back tops. I am now the studio manager at a fitness studio, where I will also do private training and instruct group fitness  classes. It’s  a very different world from the pinup, rockabilly life I lead, but health and fitness are my passion in life. I am excited to start a new chapter in life but wanted to say goodbye to what has been my life for the past three years. While I knew I wouldn’t work at Rowena forever and there was very little growing left for me to do there, it was still sad to say  I was leaving. If you’ve been to the brick and mortar shop you know that it has gone through a lot of visual changes, which I worked very hard on. I’ve also met some amazing people there and made a few friends out of my favorite customers  (you know who you are ).

Not only do I love helping pretty gals find pretty dresses, I love helping myself  find pretty dresses 😉 I will definitely miss trying on all the fun new dresses and being the first to see it all. I’ll miss having the first pick, having an amazing wardrobe and the killer discount.

Ill miss my lovely coworkers who made the slow days and tedious tasks fun and silly.

10930941_10153044938117790_576738279206358002_nI’ve had some really great times at Rowena…and of course, there has been drama, we are just a bunch of girls after all 😉 There has been fun times, annoying customer times, tearful times, creepy dude and stalker times, and absolutely everything in between.

I’ve done a lot of growing while at Rowena. Ive loved being recognized as the girl who works at Rowena. Ive loved helping young girls find an outfit that makes them feel like a beautiful princess. I’ve loved playing dress-up with gals and having fun and giggling and making friends with them.

It was a fun job where I was able to develop a lot of my retail and merchandising skills but it was time to move on. I’ll miss making fun window displays; Ill miss dressing the mannequins; Ill miss making fun store displays; Ill miss putting together fun outfit; Ill miss impromptu cupcakes, photo shoots, and weekend re-caps. Thank you Rowena and associates for the lovely three years. Its been a blast!! I’ll be seeing you around!

Danger De Lux gets a new tattoo!

I have been waiting for what seems like ages to get a new tattoo! And this past Friday I was finally able to get what I have been lusting after! A pineapple tattoo!!

I’ve been following Julie from Lucky Strike Tattoos on instagram for a while and fell in love with her style. Top that off with glowing reviews and I knew I wanted this girl to do my next tattoo. Her style reminds me of Mimsy of Mimsys Trailer Trash tattoo in Australia, and boy would I ever love to get tattooed there! But Julies style is exactly what I wanted and I am so in love with her work and especially the pineapple she did for me!

Here are a couple pieces she did for some other lucky folks

julieAlso I snuck some photos of her room in the studio ( I hope she doesn’t mind). It was too cute not to! Its retro and girly and sweet like sugar!

20150403_124319 (2)20150403_110448 (2)The pictures don’t do it justice…its really just the sweetest and totally suited to her personality! She was wearing a top with pizza slices all over it, a bow in her hair, heart shaped ear weights, and red lipstick! So cute!

I emailed Julie a little while back asking her for a pineapple and what she drew was absolutely perfect! And with the colour its even better!

20150403_114936 (2)

the linework.

20150403_124327 (2)and the colour!!

Eeee I love it! Seriously gals (and guys) go see Julie at Lucky Strike Tattoo

I intend to finish up the bottom of my leg in the next few months with more tropical themed pieces, like tikis, cocktail drinks, etc, all done by Julie!

This is probably my new favorite piece. Do you have a favorite tattoo?

Tatyana has me seeing spots.

Back in the summer I purchased a few dresses off of the Tatyana website. This was when they were switching from Bettie Page to Tatyana and had just listed a ton of super cute dresses in their clearance section. I had my eye on this little yellow number for a while but was scared to take the plunge – I usually stick to safer colours that I am familiar and comfortable with. Gosh, I can’t even recall the last time I had worn yellow! But at the price, I could not pass up this yellow wiggle dress

.taty1I was flipping through my closet trying to decide what to wear to work, when I thought, golly, I have only worn this dress once since I purchased it! I slipped it on and thought once more, why don’t I wear this dress more often?! It is super slinky, which usually makes me weary that it is going to show all my bits, but instead it hugs me just right. This yellow number is very stretchy ( it doesn’t even require a slit) and accentuates my hour glass figure.

taty2While I wore this dress to work, I think it would be equally fantastic for a night out. If there is one thing I love, its a low cut neckline and this dress does not disappoint. A pair of black heels, back-seam stockings, and vintage bangles complete my look; for an evening out, a black vinyl clutch would do the trick!

taty3

Tatyana still has a big clearance section on their website, which I believe is the brand clearing out the old Bettie Page items. Nonetheless, you can get a fantastic deal on a dress or two. I think I may have paid $20 for this dress and it was worth every dime. I purchased another one at the same time, but still have to get it tailored ( if you don’t see your size.consider buying one up to get it taken it- the price is right). I got this wiggle dress in a medium and it is the perfect fit. I find Tatyana usually fits true to size. I measure at 37-30-41.

taty4I can’t resist Cherries little face! She just wants to be a model ( it think she might just make it, don’t you?)

Below are the pretty bangle I paired with my dress- both gifts; one a glass olive bangle, and the other a yellow butterscotch carved Bakelite bangle.

What is your favorite wiggle dress? Or your favorite Tatyana dress?

What’s in your makeup bag: Kerosene Deluxe

Bombshell Kerosene Deluxe is on the blog today sharing her favorite makeup with us. This mega babe hails from Vancouver, Canada, but is originally from Amsterdam. She is a highly successful plus size model, whose work ranges from pinup to gothic to fetish. Kerosene Deluxe is always looking fabulous and I cannot wait to share with you what makeup she uses – she even studied cosmetology in Amsterdam! Kerosene Deluxe also support body positivity, which in our world, is extremely important- love your body and all bodies equally – it sounds simple, but its not being practiced very well by a lot of people out there.

Here is what Kerosene Deluxe had to say about her look

“I have always had a flair for the dramatic and glamorous but also the dark and macabre. I’d say my ‘look’ tends to walk a line between classic Pin-Up glamor with a dose of Gothic chique.
I strongly believe I’d be a drag queen if I was born a man, haha. I like make-up, a lot…and have never been ashamed to admit that I wear a lot of it. I’ve been intrigued by it since I was a small child. My mother was a very glamorous woman and I used to love watching her getting ready (and rummaging through her cosmetics when she wasn’t home). I started wearing make-up at a young age, much to the dismay of my teachers. For my 8th birthday I received a beauty case filled with make up, I remember being overcome with joy with this treasure! 10 years later I put myself through cosmetology school to become a make-up artist. I do my own photo shoot make-up 99% of the time. I actually enjoy this process and taking my time getting ready, it get’s me into the character I will be portraying in the shoot.
For me make-up has always been more about art rather than vanity. (I feel equally comfortable barefaced as I do dolled up). I love experimenting with colors and avant-garde looks. I don’t believe in ‘trends’, seasonal or age appropriate propaganda…I believe in wearing what you love and doing so with pride. “
KeroseneBijouxJune2013-3004805-Edit (2)Kerosene broke down her look between day and evening for us as well!
Daytime Make-Up:
“I will start off with a smooth and even canvas. A lightweight foundation, concealer under the eyes, a light dusting of setting powder and some soft contouring with bronzer, I’ll pop a bit of a coral blush on my cheeks and a bit of highlighter on my cheekbones, under the brow bone and cupids bow (above the lips)
For the eyes I’ll apply a champagne tone (slight sheen) on the eyelid and a medium beige shade into the crease and lower lash line. I’ll finish it with winged black eyeliner (I tend to wear mine quite thick) and mascara (top lashes only) followed by filling my eyebrows.
My lip color that day depends on mood and what I’m wearing. Bold ruby red’s, vibrant pink’s and soft peachy shades are my go to’s.”
sf (2)Evening and Photo shoot Looks:
“Honestly anything goes for this and I tend to pull out all the stops. I’ll substitute the lightweight foundation for a fuller coverage cream based one (Cover FX total cover cream foundation), amp up the contouring and highlighting and dramatize the eyes by adding shades of black eye shadow (and/or a variety of other fun colors) and further extending the wings and width of my eyeliner.
I will often wear multiple pairs of false eyelashes for special events. Yes at once..I’ll stick and stack a couple on top of each other for extravagant drama. My brows don’t go through a drastic change for an evening look as I enjoy a strong and sharply filled and shaped brow day or night..
I’ll wear whatever lipstick shade suits my fancy; red, black, green..You name it!”
DSC_8401 copyweb (2)Here are Kerosene’s favorite products…are you ready for it?! S
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
This is how it all starts, a good make up needs a smooth canvas. A pea-sized amount of this applied all over the skin will ensure a smooth and even application of your foundation but also increases the longevity of your make up. Smashbox for me, is the king of primer and this one is my all time favorite.
Guerlain Lingerie de Peau foundation
This foundation provides medium coverage and feels like air..Seriously, it feels like you are wearing nothing! It is SO beautiful and has a nice glowy finish. Perfect for a polished daytime look (but would totally work for evening too) I love this stuff..
NYX Stay matte but not flat powder
I love this powder because it’s super versatile (and also suuuper inexpensive!), it can be applied with a brush and make a great light setting powder but when applied by powder puff actually gives you a decent bit of coverage. I has  a nice non chalky finish. Because of that it makes a great little compact..I always have this one me..(car, purse, gym bag or in my husband’s pocket when I don’t feel like carrying a purse)
Smashbox Contouring Palette
So they actually discontinued this a while ago but after much uproar from fellow beauty fiends decided to bring it back. (Thanks goodness, I just couldn’t even….) It has 3 shades inside; a deeper contouring shade (for a dramatic contour), a bronzer shade (for adding warmth, glow or a soft contour) and an ivory shade (which can be used for subtle highlighting) All shades are matte which is perfect. The tones work really well as neutral eye shadows too should you have limited make-up bag space or need a multi-purpose product. It comes with a great little angled contouring brush ❤ I hope they extend the shade range for these in the future so that a variety of people with different skin tones can enjoy them too.

Stila Custom Color Blush ‘Self adjusting Coral’
This is a great blush that gives you a lovely healthy glow..I adore coral shades because they bring such life to the skin and look great on all complexions. You can layer and ‘build’ the pigment of this blush too, to get the desired level of drama an color.
Estee Lauder Double Wear ‘stay in place flawless’ concealer
Concealer would probably be my number 1 ‘must have’ cosmetic item. I have terrible dark circles (no matter how much sleep) under my eyes and your average concealer just doesn’t quite cut it for me. I love this particular one because of it’s great coverage yet complete lack of creasing or settling into lines due to it’s long-wear, no transfer formula. It’s great for vacation too as this concealer is waterproof..Trust me I’ve tried and tested!
542233_10200716211010784_1039784132_n (2)
Smashbox ‘Fade to Black’ eyeshadow palette
Sadly this palette was a limited edition item from Fall 2013 and no longer available, which is sad because it’s a fantastic palette with shades suitable for soft daytime to dramatic evening looks. Due to the depth of pigment this palette lasts pretty long (as you don’t need a lot of product), which is great because I treasure it and don’t want it to run out. This is usually the shadow palette I’ll take with me when I travel, because it’s so versatile and compact in size so easy to fit into a smaller cosmetic bag.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color
I cannot even begin to say how much I love this product. It’s phenomenal. If you like super precise and neat brows this is a great product for you, because it’s liquid eyeliner like brush will give you the cleanest lines ever. You can softly feather in strokes or just go full on dramatic statement brow with this and it’ll all look fab..Best part, it will literally stay alllll day (as the name suggests), it’s sweatproof, waterproof, rubproof…It seriously won’t budge…LOVE
Geisha Ink Liquid Liner
I have a major love affair with eyeliners that don’t smudge or run..This is because I have year-round allergies which often leads to watery eyes. This amazing liner will not disappoint on that front, because once it’s on, it will stay there (until it meets Mr waterproof make-up remover). It’s hard to say what my favorite thing is about this liner because it’s just a total package of awesome. I can safely say I’m an eyeliner aficionado and this one is by far the best liquid liner I’ve ever used. The super precise microfiber brush tip gives an easy and superior application and the liner itself is jet black, so you don’t have to layer it to get that intense black finish. Bonus: Geisha Ink is a Canadian brand:)
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner in ‘Snow’
This is a new product in the Stila range and therefor new to my happy make-up collection. I find myself asking where this has been my whole life, because I’m obsessed with it. What it is is a waterproof white liquid eyeliner. I use it right above my black eyeliner to give it pop. I love the contrast and the 60’s mod-like/vintage barbie look it gives.
Guerlain Cils d’Enfer Maxi Lash Mascara
I was never blessed with full luscious lashes, so good mascara is a big deal to me. This mascara is great because it provides everything I want; A jet black finish, lots of volume, lift and curl.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick ‘Beso’
Another stellar product in Stila’s ‘stay all day’ line. This is my absolute favorite red! It’s super matte and long wearing, the perfect shade and lasts through nibbles and smoochies. Because of it’s lasting formula you don’t even need to use a lip liner with it, as it won’t ‘bleed’ ever…
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Matte in ‘Pagan’
I’ve always been a big fan of OCC’s ‘lip tars’ because they are super awesome glosses with great color and hold. This shade is a new favorite of mine, it’s a black with undertones of purple and super dramatic. I’ll wear it on it’s own if I’m serving up Goth realness or I mix in a drop with my other lipsticks to darken them and create custom shades. It gives a nice fresh feel on the lips too due to the peppermint oil ingredient.
Dior’s Dior Addict Extreme lipstick in Pink Icon
This is my favorite neutral pink shade for a soft shiny daytime pout. It makes my lips feel moisturized and plump.  I love Dior lipsticks…
Rodial Dragon’s Blood Hyaluronic Tonic mist
Last but not least, the one that seals the deal…So this is actually a toner (a great toner) but I use it as a finishing mist. It’s refreshing, smells nice but also set’s my make up. The hyaluronic acid ingredient is great for your skin and provides moisture and plumpness, while the dragons blood (not actual dragon’s blood but a tree sap) is a great skin soother and healer. I always carry this around because aside from a wonderful setting spray it also works great when I have allergic skin flareup’s and redness.

What a great and complete list of products! I am interested in checking out the Stila brow color and Geisha Ink eyeliner (my eyes tend to water a lot as well). I am a huge fan of Canadian or American made products, especially as this means the products are more likely to be cruelty-free. The Geisha Ink website list the stores that carry their brand and there are 9 shops in Edmonton that do ( including Lux Beauty Boutique) and you bet I am going to go pick up an eyeliner! I’ll let you know what I think. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to do this series- to find out about new, amazing products I had no notion of- thanks Kerosene!
unnamedA huge thank you to Kerosene Deluxe for sharing a few of her beauty secrets with us. Not only is she delightfully gorgeous and talented, Kerosene seems like a real down to earth gal – someone I would want to be friends with. I wish all the best and even more success to her!

Adeline’s Attic- handpicked vintage clothing

Adeline’s Attic is an Edmonton based vintage clothing shop. Adeline’s Attic has been open for 5 years; in fact, this month marks their 5th birthday! Adeline’s Attic opened shop in 2009 on Etsy and you can still find her and all her gorgeous vintage there.

Vintage loving owner, Jill, who looks like shes stepped right off the Atlantic boardwalk, has a deep appreciation for vintage aesthetic. Her shop carries a wide range of wares, ranging from the 1920s to the 1990’s. The bulk of her collection falls within in the 20s to 50s, with a wide variety of styles and sizes.

Jill asked me if I would like to model some of her vintage pieces and with delight, I said I would love to. As a vintage loving girl living in a modern world I have difficulty finding vintage pieces that fit my waist. It is common to find pieces with a 25-27″ waist, however 29-30″ is much rarer. Adeline’s Attic carries a a ton of different sizes, which makes me oh so happy, as I would love to add more vintage pieces to my wardrobe.

1919626_10154685024635618_5265573623224326381_nThis 1940s gown fit like it was made for me. This is something I could see myself getting married in- it is just divine.

I love the colour of this gorgeous set ( jacket and dress). This dress felt so lovely on and would be a great addition to any gals wardrobe.

10606276_10154685043750618_6324600747658341722_nThe photos were taken by the owner herself, at an old building at the University of Alberta, which provided the perfect setting. This gal does it all herself- picking, cleaning, photography, uploading, packing, and shipping.

This skirt also fit like it was made for me… vintage cashmere, how fantastic! I have had a very hard time finding vintage items that fit me like they should. All of the pieces I modeled fit like a dream! I have a feeling I will be visiting Adeline’s Attic quite a bit, especially as Viva Las Vegas approaches ( a little birdie told me she has some 50’s and 60’s swimsuits to sell)

Head over to Adeline’s Attic on Etsy to shop some drool worthy vintage pieces. You can also find her on facebook where you can keep up to date on new items added to the shop, see photos from shoots, and hear any news.

A big thank you to Jill, from Adeline’s Attic for asking me to model her amazing vintage dresses and separates.

Q & A with Ruby Roxx

I am so excited for todays post, which  features the stunning Ruby Roxx – an internationally published bombshell of a model.

Not only is she going to share with us what is in her makeup bag, she also so kindly answered a few questions for us. I was going to put it all in one post, but Ruby’s answers to my questions were so well thought out, I am splitting it into two posts.

Before we get to the Q & A, I just want to say a big ‘thank-you’ to Ruby for taking the time to share with us not only her makeup, but some great tips on getting into pinup modelling, how to get a perfect pin-up leg, and a few interesting facts about herself.

ruby-26-X2 (2)(photo credit: Cat Tetreault Photography)

  1. How did you get into pinup modelling? Where did Ruby Roxx begin?

7 years ago, I was asked by a friend to be a model for her hair salon. I had never modeled before, but agreed to do it in exchange for a free cut and colour. When I was at the shoot, I just fell in love with being in front of the camera. I had always had a passion for vintage and retro. I loved the classic looks of movie stars and pinups from the 40’s and 50’s. I asked the photographer if he would be interested in shooting me as a pinup. He agreed. I spent a month practicing my poses in the mirror, and buying just the right outfits. When the day of my shoot came along, I was ready. I had so much fun, and that was the start of Ruby the pinup.

2626_60787270681_3385663_n (2)(photo credit: Mike Chatwin)

2.What advice can you give to gals looking to break into the pinup world?

Do your research. Practice your faces and posing in the mirror. Hire a PROFESSIONAL pinup photographer. You will likely get hair and makeup, pose coaching, and even sometimes, wardrobe included. This is the best way to beef up your portfolio. It is an investment in your career. I spend a lot of time online, networking, updating my facebook and other social media, planning shoots etc. It’s a great hobby for someone to do for fun, and its also an amazing career. But as with any career, it takes time, patience, motivation, skill and hard work. Most of all, have fun! That is the most important part.

  1. What are your wardrobe staples? Your favorite brands and favorite place to shop?

For pinup, my wardrobe staples are what goes on underneath. My support wear and stockings. Proper support wear will give you the flawless shape that is so important when it comes to pinup. Whenever I shoot, I wear support wear (my favourite are from Rago or Orchard Corset), full pantyhose to make my legs look flawless, and thigh high, back seam nylons on top (my favourites are from Kix’ies and Secrets in Lace). Not only does it even out your skin tone and curves but it gives you a true vintage look.

  1. As a curvy model, whats your take on all the body positive and shaming happening in the pinup community right now?

I can not stand body shaming, but a lot of people have it mixed up. They think by telling me that I am “a real woman” that is a compliment. ALL women are real women, regardless of size, shape, age, or anything else. It’s just as offensive to tell a slim person to eat a cheese burger as it is to tell me to lose weight. Some people seem to think that by telling me I’m better than someone who is slim, that they are being body positive, but I find that terribly offensive. Body positivity is not tearing one body type down to bring up another. In fact, that is body shaming in its truest form.

I am very confident in my own skin, but just like everyone else, I have bad days. It’s upsetting when someone calls me a “pig” or “unhealthy”. I am a very healthy person. My health has nothing to do with my size, just as my beauty doesn’t depend on a dress size. I just try to remember however on those bad days that most of the people that comment those things are just trolls looking for a reaction from me. Its easily fixed with “block and delete” combo.

DSC_4668_fb (2)(photo credit: Pinup Perfection)

  1. When you are not being fabulous in front of the camera, what else might you up to?

I just had a wonderful summer traveling down the west coast. I love to travel. I got a beautiful camera for my birthday, so im trying to figure out how to use it. When I’m at home, I love to relax with my boyfriend, or friends, with a glass of wine and some good food. Maybe go listen to live music or visit a tiki bar.

I also just started a brand new magazine called “Beauty Mark Magazine”, so that has been keeping me busy. I wanted to create a magazine that was a different kind of fashion/beauty publication. I wanted to challenge people to see their true beauty in all their imperfections and uniqueness, instead of the idealized version of beauty we see in so many magazines right now. It will also include stories, interviews, product reviews and more. It is scheduled to release in November 2014, so that has been keeping me very busy. I’m very excited to see where this new adventure will lead me!

6.Do you have any quirks or hidden talents we should know about?

I used to be a professional chef, so I love to cook. I don’t do it professionally anymore, but I love to cook whenever I get the chance. I also can make a mean cocktail. I have my own mini web series “Retro Recipes with Ruby Roxx” that I am hoping to film more of in the next few months. You can find them on my website at www.rubyroxxmodel.com

My goodness, doesn’t Ruby sound like one fun gal?! If I’m ever in Vancouver, I’m definitely going to have to see how ‘mean’ your cocktails actually are! Make sure you all check out Ruby Roxx on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rubyroxxmodel.

I just had to look up some of her videos, because I love retro cocktails… And of course, I had to share with you… Learn from Ruby how to make a classic Mai Tai below. And stay tuned for part 2 with Ruby Roxx and her makeup bag
