Laced Up Cabaret

Last Friday evening I attended Sweet Carousel Corsetry’s Laced Up Cabaret – an evening of decadent fashion and jaw dropping burlesque shows. I love any opportunity to get extra dolled up so as soon as I saw this event I knew I simply must go! Plus one of my besties was modeling!

1935544_10156540345220417_6571701509619404285_nThe acts of the evening were just spectacular. Special guest included Kira Von Sutra, Amber Ray, Raven Virginia, and Dangrrr Doll – my goodness these gals where fantastic. They way they moved, their costumes, and the acts themselves were beautiful!

Local talent were also present and included the likes of the stunning, Violette Coquette (one of my favorite – her costumes were so creative!), boylesque sensation Beau Creep, adorable and funny Cherry Monroe, Le Tabby Lexington who was cute as a button, and redheaded vixen Holly Von Sin.

I spent a lot of time figuring out what to wear….nothing was fitting me quite right and I really didn’t want to buy something new. I was beginning to worry….that is until I saw a fabulous vintage hat at Swish Vintage that I used for inspiration. From there everything fell into place.

20160513_201145

I ended up wearing my Oblong Box Shop pink tiki circle skirt,  HellBunny crinoline, black Fables by Barrie Bustier, Laura Byrnes shrug, Chelsea Crew mary jane heels, a vintage purse, vintage brooch, and that gorgeous vintage hat from Swish Vintage. The hat really encouraged the whole outfit – I don’t know what I would have done if I had not found it!

20160513_201136It was a lovely evening as well…summer has arrived early in Edmonton. No jacket was required for the night so I was able to display my outfit in full force.

A closer look at my outfit and my stunning gal pal who is wearing the design her wore in the Sweet Carousal show. All of the pieces were to die for and if money grew on trees, I would have them all!

20160513_214741My date and I stopped for a snack before the show and of course I had to snap photos, because well, we just looked so darling eating hot dogs!

20160513_194256isnt my friend a knockout?

20160513_194225Thanks again to Swish Vintage for the delish hat! Be sure to head over to their facebook page and stop in the shop to find some treasures for yourself!

Plus keep an eye out on The Oblong Box shop – she has some very fun new designs coming out soon, along with the very pretty ones released last summer, like the one I am wearing

Danger De Lux: all work and no play…

I wanted to write a little post since it has been so quite around here lately…a tumble weed just passed by!! I have so darn busy with work I haven’t had a moment to think! I have been working 9+ hours almost every day and then have to hit the gym after, so you could imagine, I have no energy left for creativity.

BUT! I have a few exciting blog posts in the works! This morning Hello June Photography and I got together for a 60s inspired photo shoot with some gorgeous frocks I borrowed from Swish Vintage, paired with a few pieces of my own.

Hello June shared one of the photos already and I am over the moon! I can not wait to see the rest!

12043049_1734264473477217_5012634156019698588_n

I need to make more time to do the things I truly enjoy doing…getting dolled up, organizing photo shoots, hunting for antiques, being creative, spend time with my gal pals… Right now, Im really just working and going to the gym; I love going to the gym, so no complaints there, but this work thing! haha

I know I have said this before, I am going to make more of an effort to post, even if they are short and sweet. So, stay tuned for some posts coming soon!

danger de lux: where i’ve been

I’m sure you have noticed the crickets chirping around here lately, perhaps you’ve seen a tumbleweed or two? I would love to say I’ve been off having the time of my life and thus just have not had time to write, but that’s not why it’s been so quite around here. The truth is I’ve changed jobs….AGAIN! And this time around, I have been busy with work…I am always busy with work, but its different this time. I work 6 days a week and sometimes pick up extra shifts at ol’ Rowena if I can, which means, working 14-16 days in a row, which is fine, it’s what I am use to. My new job however is in the corporate retail world…don’t judge…and it is draining! Plus I am struggling with the fact that I am back in the mall….right where I started 12 years ago.

The company I work far is great thus far…it’s a small big box store, which means, you are not just a number. But alas, I do not get to dress nice at work….something I have been missing since the summer. It is a casual clothing store, which means leggings, hoodies, converse, etc. This is fine every now and again, but I am back to where I was at the gym….just not feeling myself.

safe_image.php

My lack of personal identity and the draining, soul sucking environment that is retail, in the mall, at the holidays, has gotten me feeling blue. Stick on top of that my moral hate for the mall and over consumption of fast fashion goods, and you best believe  I have been feeling unmotivated to blog. But, it pays the bills…and that is what is important, right….? If you could see me right now, you would notice I am shaking my head “no” as I write.

8048da528c90a09ed8e7976dcff0fea6But every morning, I pull on my big girl pants and make the best of it, because everything is temporary and I know there is a lot I can learn from  my new job, which may come in handy one day, if I ever get around to opening my own store ( a very far fetched dream)

I hope to make more time to blog and have some post ideas ready to go, so here’s to the new year, full of new experiences and new opportunities! This year I am hoping to do more photoshoots ( photographers, Im looking at you), take some time to relax ( vegas, anyone?), reach my fitness goals ( buns of steel, here I come), and really grow my blog into what I know it can be!

Don’t stray too far cats and kittens, because I promise ( i mean it this time) I have more posts coming up real soon!

xoxo

Danger De Lux: MIA

I haven’t been posting much lately…or at all for that matter. I started a new job about 2 months ago, which means I am no longer surrounded by pinup dresses and gals, but instead am working 10- 12 hours a day at a gym. As I am transitioning and figuring out how to balance work and life, I have found little to no time to be creative. I am also trying to figure out what I want to do with this blog…if I want to keep it, changing up the content, or just stop all together.

11898650_974511375948891_5806583080278900380_n

At the end of my day, I have no energy left to try to write about clothing I don’t even get to wear anymore. You see, I wear gym clothes all day everyday now… well, except for Tuesdays when I work at Swish. I didn’t think it would be such a big deal, not dressing up everyday…but I really miss it. By the time Saturday night rolls around, I’m usually exhausted from my week and would rather stay in. I have been making more of an effort though to go out and wear my dresses, that now hang sadly in the closet.

12049686_991609810905714_4142826876113917567_n

I have also been feeling overwhelmed with life and some of the choices I need to make in the upcoming months as I approach my 30th birthday (eeks!) My mind has been working over time thinking, thinking, thinking!

So, that is where I have been…at the gym, in my gym clothes! And trying to sort out life and what I intend on doing with it. I’m hoping to get back into the swing of blogging things here shortly

All Natural Pinup: My Favorite Skin Care Products

About 8 months ago, around my birthday, I began getting really bad breakouts. I had never suffered from acne as a teenager and rarely broke out. I always considered my skin to be ‘pretty good’. But of course, when I turn 29, all hell breaks loose! This was also about the time I become interested in using chemical free products – it would be a few months still until I changed my skin care products. But I was determined to get my face under control! I have never been good at covering up blemishes, so to get the pinup up face I wanted, I needed to have clear skin.

11693965_10153051056710872_2183776103872876915_nIf you have used any acne or breakout products, you have to know they are over flowing with chemicals! They smell of pure chemical. And this is not what I want to be putting on my skin. So I searched elsewhere, outside of the drug store, for a chemical and cruelty free product. I had read about Rocky Mountain Soap Company – that they are chemical free, Canadian company, with good practices- so when I stumbled upon them in the mall one day, I stopped in and bought a few items.

11987043_10155993431100008_6424575976049632147_nI was very impressed with the simplicity of their store. Minimal packaging, how it was laid out, things were easy to find, and when I checked out I was given a fancy pamphlet listing “no-no” ingredients that one should look for and avoid in products.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company products are now in my daily regime. My skin is back on track, which means no more breakouts! Oh sure I get the odd blemish here or there, but nothing like what was happening a few months ago.

So, what to know my favorite products?!

Avocado Facial Soap $5.25

indexI use this soap both in the morning and in the evening. It’s a gentle soap, that does not dry out my skin. And for the price, you really cant go wrong

Bamboo Brightening Face Polish $16

scba

I use this polish in the morning ( or in the evening if I have forgotten to use it earlier). It makes my skin feel refreshed and invigorated. It gets rid of all the dead skin and helps clear out my pores

Breakout Buster $9

static1.squarespace.com

This little stick in made anti-bacterial via the tea tree in it. It smells gently of tea tree, and we all know tea tree is a great anti bacterial and anti inflammatory agent. Its used as a spot treatment, so whenever I do have a blemish or feel one coming on, I use this guy, day or night

Beech Tree Bud Eye Cream $35

scec

I also use this amazing eye cream in the morning and the evening, before bed. It is nice and light and also very gentle, which is important for an eye cream.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company has some other products I really want to try, like their cleansers for example, so when I do Ill let you know how I like them!

I do use a few other skin care products from derma-e, aubrey organics, and green beaver, but I am really loving Rocky Mountain stuff right now.

They only have stores in B.C, Alberta, and Manitoba, but you can buy it all online! And, they also send a free gift, usually a whole bar of soap – I love when companies do that.

Like I said, my breakouts are now totally under controlled and my skin is back to normal! No need for chemicals, just all natural goodness!

Friday Finds: Thrift Store Vintage

Every now and again I find amazing vintage at thrift stores…and not 80s or 90s vintage, but real vintage gold! I was at a small thrift shop about a month ago, not expecting to find much, but my eye caught something glittering among the h&m tunic dresses and beer box t-shirts. It was a gorgeous handmade shift dress…and would you believe it fit me perfectly?! I could not believe my luck! Whomever gave this frock away had no idea the joy it would bring one vintage loving pinup.

_DSC6576e (2)I was even more excited about the price I paid for this lovely dress… $3.50!! Can you believe it?! Goodwill colour codes their items and each week switches which colour is 50% off and it was just my luck that this one was on sale that day.

_DSC6575eHow did I know it was vintage and handmade? First of all, it had a metal zipper, which is a big giveaway. It also did not have a label indicating is was probably handmade. And it had a lot of extra fabric on the inside, to allow for it to be let out if need be; this is something that stopped as mass production become more and more popular. You will never see this kind of extra fabric in clothing nowadays.

_DSC6579e_DSC6578e (2)

Doesn’t it look like it was made for me? It is rare to find a vintage piece that fits so pristine.

I also found a little dress jacket at the vintage shop next to Rowena, called Decadence. And can we check out those amazing Bakelite bangles! Aren’t they divine?!

_DSC6584eIm sure this jacket had a matching dress back in its hay day. Now, its a nice, light, and lovely jacket to pair with an evening dress.

_DSC6581eI feel like a total catalog model in these shots! I love it! So cheesy. But hey, this jacket is just so cute! I paid $12 for this gem and can’t wait to find the perfect occasion to debut it.

_DSC6582eI have more Friday Finds in the works for you lovelies, so stay tuned!!

What was your best vintage dress find?

All Natural Pinup: My Favorite Mascara

For the last 8 months or so, I have been switching over all my cosmetics and toiletries to all natural, chemical and cruelty free versions (read more about it here). I have converted almost all of my makeup now to the natural version of what I once used. While some of it is quite different ( the lipsticks), some of it is very much the same (eye shadow). One of my favorite conversions so far so been the mascara.

Pure Anada is my favorite all natural cosmetics company- they have everything you need to make the switch, plus are Canadian and budget friendly ( read more about them here). Today I want to dedicate a whole post to their mascara…oh boy, do I love their mascara.

10987314_875939745806055_7817043415040917192_nSince I was a teenager,  I have been constantly looking for the perfect mascara. Something that will give me volume, without clumping. Something that will give me length and will stay on. And of course, it had to be the blackest black.

I bought Pure Anada’s mascara without reading any reviews or even knowing if it would be good. All I knew was that Pure Anada was a chemical free company and was on Jill Deacons list of good cosmetic companies to buy.  I bought it off of well.ca, where I get most of my natural cosmetics. It was only $14 so I didn’t think it was too much of an investment if it didn’t work out.

690ada796e8418d70e7ed33925561466_ra,w403,h403_pa,w403,h403It did work out. And it was amazing. Just think, you can get drug store brand mascaras for the same price ( sometimes more) and those ones are filled with cancer causing chemicals. Pure Anadas mascara is paraban, mercury, and gluten free. Instead it is made with coconut oil, olive oil, and rice bran wax. It has a small list of ingredients which you can pronounce!

As a pinup gal, your makeup is a huge part of your look. And, for me, the eyes are the most important – a good cat eye, strong, shaped brows, and luscious lashes. A lot of gals wear false eyelashes, and believe me, if I could just master it, I would too. But let’s me honest, I do not have the time and at my new job, they aren’t really appropriate. So, I turn to mascara to give me the lashes I need to complete my look. Pure Anada mascara makes my lashes long and voluminous and oh so black.

11898588_972422856157743_3661863588802776548_nWhile, in the past I always bought water proof eye makeup, this mascara is not waterproof, which is fine. It has great staying power despite not actually being water proof. I can teach a class and get sweaty and still not have raccoon eyes. That being said, it is easy to take off too- I use Green Beaver Makeup Remover.

Well.ca carries almost all of Pure Anadas products, but if you head over to Pure Anadas website you can see actual stores that sell their products. I have tried a bunch of their products and have loved every one…I have yet to have a bad experience with any of their cosmetics – ive tried their eye shadow, concealer, bronzer, eye brow powder, mascara, lipsticks, brushes, and tinted moisturizer and I have loved it all!

11130177_914311358635560_4274429871939484649_nHave you tried any chemical free cosmetics yet? Which are your favorites?

Don’t forget to use #allnaturalpinup on social media to let the world know you’re using chemcial free cosmetics
