What I Wore: 1970s Italian Swing Skirt

Swish Vintage has stolen my heart. I can not walk in there without finding some treasure or another that I have to make mine. This time it was a skirt on a mannequin in the window. A wrap swing skirt, black with little white flowers, red lining along the inside, and a very full skirt -no crinoline necessary, only if you really want it.

70s12

This skirt was apparently handmade in Italy in the 70s. The construction is divine and it is in mint condition. I can not believe I scored this skirt and that no one else had snatched it up yet! It fits me perfectly too…it was fate! Its a very 50s style which is why I love it so much!

I wore it last Saturday when the sun was shinning and it was a beautiful early summer day. I headed down to a local park to soak up some rays and took advantage of the sunshine to snap a few photos…not the best, but they will do!70s32This is the perfect summer skirt. I know I am going to wear it all season long and then into the winter with tick tights and boots. I would probably style it a bit different if I were heading out with some gals or painting the town red (as I do) however this particular Saturday was a lazy, relaxed kind of day, to which this skirt was perfect for.

70s3

The red lining makes it fun to style. I wore a chunky vintage red bracelet, a german made brooch, and red hair flowers.

70s4Edmonton guys and gals, you have to go check out Swish Vintage this summer….My goodness, she has beautiful pieces in right now that will not wait around for you!

Laced Up Cabaret

Last Friday evening I attended Sweet Carousel Corsetry’s Laced Up Cabaret – an evening of decadent fashion and jaw dropping burlesque shows. I love any opportunity to get extra dolled up so as soon as I saw this event I knew I simply must go! Plus one of my besties was modeling!

1935544_10156540345220417_6571701509619404285_nThe acts of the evening were just spectacular. Special guest included Kira Von Sutra, Amber Ray, Raven Virginia, and Dangrrr Doll – my goodness these gals where fantastic. They way they moved, their costumes, and the acts themselves were beautiful!

Local talent were also present and included the likes of the stunning, Violette Coquette (one of my favorite – her costumes were so creative!), boylesque sensation Beau Creep, adorable and funny Cherry Monroe, Le Tabby Lexington who was cute as a button, and redheaded vixen Holly Von Sin.

I spent a lot of time figuring out what to wear….nothing was fitting me quite right and I really didn’t want to buy something new. I was beginning to worry….that is until I saw a fabulous vintage hat at Swish Vintage that I used for inspiration. From there everything fell into place.

20160513_201145

I ended up wearing my Oblong Box Shop pink tiki circle skirt,  HellBunny crinoline, black Fables by Barrie Bustier, Laura Byrnes shrug, Chelsea Crew mary jane heels, a vintage purse, vintage brooch, and that gorgeous vintage hat from Swish Vintage. The hat really encouraged the whole outfit – I don’t know what I would have done if I had not found it!

20160513_201136It was a lovely evening as well…summer has arrived early in Edmonton. No jacket was required for the night so I was able to display my outfit in full force.

A closer look at my outfit and my stunning gal pal who is wearing the design her wore in the Sweet Carousal show. All of the pieces were to die for and if money grew on trees, I would have them all!

20160513_214741My date and I stopped for a snack before the show and of course I had to snap photos, because well, we just looked so darling eating hot dogs!

20160513_194256isnt my friend a knockout?

20160513_194225Thanks again to Swish Vintage for the delish hat! Be sure to head over to their facebook page and stop in the shop to find some treasures for yourself!

Plus keep an eye out on The Oblong Box shop – she has some very fun new designs coming out soon, along with the very pretty ones released last summer, like the one I am wearing

Danger De Lux: all work and no play…

I wanted to write a little post since it has been so quite around here lately…a tumble weed just passed by!! I have so darn busy with work I haven’t had a moment to think! I have been working 9+ hours almost every day and then have to hit the gym after, so you could imagine, I have no energy left for creativity.

BUT! I have a few exciting blog posts in the works! This morning Hello June Photography and I got together for a 60s inspired photo shoot with some gorgeous frocks I borrowed from Swish Vintage, paired with a few pieces of my own.

Hello June shared one of the photos already and I am over the moon! I can not wait to see the rest!

12043049_1734264473477217_5012634156019698588_n

I need to make more time to do the things I truly enjoy doing…getting dolled up, organizing photo shoots, hunting for antiques, being creative, spend time with my gal pals… Right now, Im really just working and going to the gym; I love going to the gym, so no complaints there, but this work thing! haha

I know I have said this before, I am going to make more of an effort to post, even if they are short and sweet. So, stay tuned for some posts coming soon!

Saying Goodbye…

I’m sure most of you know that for the past three years I have  been working at one of the top rockabilly and pinup shops in Canada (and arguably  North America) and for the last 2 of those years I have been the manager, putting my heart and soul into Rowena. If you follow my Facebook  page you would have seen  my posts about how I was leaving and to come say goodbye. After three long years, it was time to move on. So with a lot of excitement and a little sadness, I am saying goodbye to Rowena, my home for the past three years. I graduated from school about a year ago and have found a potentially amazing job in my field. I’ve traded in my novelty print skirts, leopard print, and tight, low cut tops for running shoes, yoga pants, sports bras, and racer back tops. I am now the studio manager at a fitness studio, where I will also do private training and instruct group fitness  classes. It’s  a very different world from the pinup, rockabilly life I lead, but health and fitness are my passion in life. I am excited to start a new chapter in life but wanted to say goodbye to what has been my life for the past three years. While I knew I wouldn’t work at Rowena forever and there was very little growing left for me to do there, it was still sad to say  I was leaving. If you’ve been to the brick and mortar shop you know that it has gone through a lot of visual changes, which I worked very hard on. I’ve also met some amazing people there and made a few friends out of my favorite customers  (you know who you are ).

Not only do I love helping pretty gals find pretty dresses, I love helping myself  find pretty dresses 😉 I will definitely miss trying on all the fun new dresses and being the first to see it all. I’ll miss having the first pick, having an amazing wardrobe and the killer discount.

Ill miss my lovely coworkers who made the slow days and tedious tasks fun and silly.

10930941_10153044938117790_576738279206358002_nI’ve had some really great times at Rowena…and of course, there has been drama, we are just a bunch of girls after all 😉 There has been fun times, annoying customer times, tearful times, creepy dude and stalker times, and absolutely everything in between.

I’ve done a lot of growing while at Rowena. Ive loved being recognized as the girl who works at Rowena. Ive loved helping young girls find an outfit that makes them feel like a beautiful princess. I’ve loved playing dress-up with gals and having fun and giggling and making friends with them.

It was a fun job where I was able to develop a lot of my retail and merchandising skills but it was time to move on. I’ll miss making fun window displays; Ill miss dressing the mannequins; Ill miss making fun store displays; Ill miss putting together fun outfit; Ill miss impromptu cupcakes, photo shoots, and weekend re-caps. Thank you Rowena and associates for the lovely three years. Its been a blast!! I’ll be seeing you around!

Hair Tutorial: Suicide Roll

I’ve finally sat down and done another hair tutorial. I have been ho-ing and humming about my hair lately because, well, I am just bored with it!! Its been the same for ages, but I refuse to cut it! So what’s a gal to do? Well, learn a new hairstyle, that’s what! The suicide roll is so much easier than it looks and it a pretty badass style if you ask me! So I did a quick tutorial to show you all how to do it. When I am at work I always get asked how I do my rolls or get the sweetest compliments! I love making these videos to show you all how easy it is to have wicked hair, so enjoy!

Snapshot_20150307_9This style works best if your hair is dirty, as it is easier to work with. You will need a backcombing tool, a soft bristle comb or brush, hairspray, just a few bobby pins, and a flower or two if you like.

I am still working on my video execution and am moving around a lot in the end, but the main part where I show you how to do the roll is clear. Watch and let me know what you think! Also, if there is anything else you

I forgot to grab some flowers for the video, so here is the complete look, with three flowers on the one side. Seriously dolls, you need to try out this hair style!

Tatyana has me seeing spots.

Back in the summer I purchased a few dresses off of the Tatyana website. This was when they were switching from Bettie Page to Tatyana and had just listed a ton of super cute dresses in their clearance section. I had my eye on this little yellow number for a while but was scared to take the plunge – I usually stick to safer colours that I am familiar and comfortable with. Gosh, I can’t even recall the last time I had worn yellow! But at the price, I could not pass up this yellow wiggle dress

.taty1I was flipping through my closet trying to decide what to wear to work, when I thought, golly, I have only worn this dress once since I purchased it! I slipped it on and thought once more, why don’t I wear this dress more often?! It is super slinky, which usually makes me weary that it is going to show all my bits, but instead it hugs me just right. This yellow number is very stretchy ( it doesn’t even require a slit) and accentuates my hour glass figure.

taty2While I wore this dress to work, I think it would be equally fantastic for a night out. If there is one thing I love, its a low cut neckline and this dress does not disappoint. A pair of black heels, back-seam stockings, and vintage bangles complete my look; for an evening out, a black vinyl clutch would do the trick!

taty3

Tatyana still has a big clearance section on their website, which I believe is the brand clearing out the old Bettie Page items. Nonetheless, you can get a fantastic deal on a dress or two. I think I may have paid $20 for this dress and it was worth every dime. I purchased another one at the same time, but still have to get it tailored ( if you don’t see your size.consider buying one up to get it taken it- the price is right). I got this wiggle dress in a medium and it is the perfect fit. I find Tatyana usually fits true to size. I measure at 37-30-41.

taty4I can’t resist Cherries little face! She just wants to be a model ( it think she might just make it, don’t you?)

Below are the pretty bangle I paired with my dress- both gifts; one a glass olive bangle, and the other a yellow butterscotch carved Bakelite bangle.

What is your favorite wiggle dress? Or your favorite Tatyana dress?

What’s in Your Makeup Bag: Danger De Lux Revisited

I wanted to do another and final “whats in your makeup bag”, featuring my makeup bag again. Since my first post, I have changed most of the makeup I use, as I have been transitioning into a chemical free lifestyle. Its a sad truth that the makeup we use it chalk full of chemicals that are very harmful to our bodies. Its also a sad truth that most of use don’t even think twice before buying and using chemical laden products and cosmetics. I posted not too long ago about a book I read, There’s lead in your Lipstick by Gill Deacon, which opened my eyes to the harm of every day cosmetics. Since then, I have begun replacing all the products I use with ones that are chemical free. I have almost finished replacing all my makeup, which has proven to be the hardest part. I have found some really great, quality, chemical and cruelty free cosmetics that have now become part of my everyday beauty regime. You cannot find these products at the drug store or even Sephora; I’ve purchased them at my local organic grocery store and online at well.ca, which offers a ton of great chemical free options, at great prices ( plus if you spend $25 or more, you get free shipping).

1506989_10152608319530872_1073914276374264163_nI’d say about 90% of the makeup I use every day is chemical free, which means it doesn’t contain any sulphates, parabens, talcs, plastics, fragrance, pthalates, SLS, mercury or lead. By default it is also all natural, usually organic, and always cruelty free. I can feel good knowing I am not putting toxins into my blood stream or harming my organs with the cosmetics I am using. I am still using some of the cosmetics I had before, as I do not want to be wasteful or toss it out to simply harm the environment. The tranisition has been long and it is still continuing. Some items, like eyeliner and eye brow products, which are the most important to me, are harder to find;I need a good quality eyeliner and brown pencil to achieve my look, so I am still on the hunt for those.

Here is all the makeup I currently use

20150215_162252 (2)Pacifica Eyeshadow pallets – still in need of more colours though, especially browns, which is what I usually use

Pure Anada Mascara ( a Canadian Company)- while I usually opt for a water proof mascara, that is something I will probably have to give up. This mascara is really nice; its doesn’t clump, but goes on really smooth and is very black.

Pacifica eye highlighter

Pure Anada Foundation – very light and not cakey at all! I apply mine with a foundation sponge.

Pure Anada mineral bronzer – one of the nicest bronzers I’ve used to date; I know not everyone uses a bronzer, but I feel like with my freckles, its needed and looks nice.

Physcians Formula Mineral Powder – I need to replace this though, as Physicians forumla isn’t actually organic, despite it saying so ( companies are allowed to lie about being organic or all natural)

Annabelle Eyebrow pencil –  I need to replace this as well

Anastasia eyebrow pomade and shawdow- this stuff is great and is cruelty free, just not chemical free.

Pacificia finshing powder

Maybelline cream eyeliner and felt eyeliner – I ran out of mine and needed one quick, so both of these will get replaced when they run out

20150215_162136 (2)

Aubrey Moisturizer – which I love! It has the slightest scent and is one of the best moisturizers I’ve used.

Pacifica CC Cream with spf 17

20150215_162511 (2) 20150215_162549 (2)

20150215_162805 (2)

Beseme Lipsticks in Cherry Red, Red Velvet, and Dusty Rose –  I love beseme but once these are done, I probably wont use them again; they are cruelty free, but not chemical free

Boho Cosmetics in Capucine (light pink) and Groseille; I also have two lip liners from Boho, as this company is all natural. These lipsticks are also quite nice and have good staying power, especially with a liner

Green Beaver lip glosses ( a Canadian company) – these have great colour, are not sticky, and are pretty top notch for lip glosses

20150215_162652 (2)Pacifica Perfume- made with essential oils and not synthetic fragrances, cruelty free, vegan, paraben free, and made with just a handful of ingredients. Look at the ingredients list of your perfume and you will likely not recognize most of the ingredients.

20150207_111348 (2)Snapshot_20150216_6

I’ve heard some people say its hard to buy cruelty free, which would mean chemical free is even harder to buy… it is and it isn’t. Like I mentioned, you will not find this stuff at Sephora or the drug store, so it isn’t convenient to get. But it is worth the extra trip to the organ market to get it. Or order it online like I do, from Well.ca

The brands to look for are: Pure Anada, Green Beaver, Pacifica, Boho, Earth Lab, Gabriel, Sante, Weleda, Audrey, and Dr. Hauschka. Don’t be fooled by brands pretending to be organic or all natural. The regulations for this kind of branding isn’t really protected. Any brand can say they are all natural or organic if they have one, miniscule ingredient which is. Garnier Fructis advertises organic products, which are anything but. Be a smart consumer and know what ingredients are in a product. The chemicals and toxins found in most common cosmetics are known to cause cancer and other ailments; most of these products are also tested on animals, for no good reason.
