20151214_191644 (2)Uma is a lil worker bee at The Wish List…she greats everyone with a snort and sometimes a kiss! I love going to to visit  Uma and the owner and checking out all the new goodies! The Wish List brings in tons of seasonal stock to suit the time of year, so right now, expect to see lots of sparkly and unqiue holiday ornaments. They also carry Thomas Sabo jewelry, which is very drool worthy, and Lora Zombie prints which I have three of myself!!  You will also find housewares like fun plates or glasses, snuggle teddy bears, home decor of all sorts, more glittering jewelry, and kick knacks! This Downtown Abbey jewelry is so pretty! They are very vintage inspired, so naturally I am drawn to them! This collection includes bracelets, gorgeous earrings, brooches, hair clips and pins, and necklaces. All the pieces either come in a box or on a lovely card, so they make for a perfect gift! And they are so very reasonably priced, so you can get her something sparkly without breaking the bank!

20151214_190005 (2)Now, if you have a pretty penny or two to spare you might consider picking up a gemstone ring from Thomas Sabo. I love black stones and these beauties do not disappoint. And if you’d like something a little lighter, there are white and blue stones as well. These babies range from about $250 to $600 but are just divine!

20151214_190402 (2)Like I mentioned, The Wish List is known for their assortment of tree ornaments. They also have a great selection of retro ornaments, like Rudolph, Elvis, campers, and these Mickey and Minnie Mouse ones. Seriously, if anyone wants to know what to get me for Christmas, these are what I want! They are so much better in real life too…Mickey and Minnie on the tea cups – how perfect!! I was told these are not made anymore, so they are extra precious. They go for $34 and would make a lovely gift as a set.

20151214_185333 (2)The Wish List has a great selection of glass bottle glasses. Again any vintage or eclectic guy or gal would love these guys! They are sold separately so you can mix and match the different styles and brands. These are great tom collins glasses; id pick up a cocktail recipe book to go along with a few of these and bam! perfect gift for a retro girl or guy, college kid, bachelor, or that one person you just don’t know what to get! For around 20 bucks a piece, you can’t go wrong.

20151214_184919 (2)These little tins are great as stocking stuffers or to act as gift boxes, which the receiver can then use again! They are great gifts if you don’t want to spend a lot or want to spice something up. They come in a variety of sizes with a bunch of different pictures.

20151214_190703 (2)The Wish List has a great selection of novelty print socks. These are a super fun little gift and there are tons of different styles and patterns to choose from. You really can’t go wrong with unique socks and unless you are buying from someone mega boring, these would be great for just about everyone!

Rowena & The Junque Cellar

The other weekend I got to take part in a fabulous corroboration between Rowena and another local business, The Junque Cellar. The Junque Cellar has been around since I can remember and houses beautiful antique treasures! They are the only shop right on Whyte Ave that sells vintage furniture and housewares. On my walk home from work I often stop in and drool after all the beautiful pieces – they always have the best vintage couch sets! It’s a wonder why Rowena and The Junque Cellar didn’t collaborate sooner!

_DSC4467e

The shoot we did had more of a 60’s feel to it show casing some gorgeous Heart of Haute dresses and the always appropriate and timeless Erin from Pinup Girl Clothing! This shoot was extra cute because it involved a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead! The other two models are just adorable gals, who looked amazing in their dresses… like they were made for them!

_DSC4452e

Heart of Haute is easily becoming one of my favorite brands. The cuts are so flattering on so many body types and the patterns are always beautiful. They are also simple cotton dresses, so they are comfortable to wear and are so easy to dress up or wear casually.

The Monique is a very simple, a line dress, but it is a lovely fit and I am absolutely giddy over the harlequin print it just came in, in both pink and blue!

_DSC4436e

_DSC4446eget the new harlequin print here

Heart of Haute also did the Beverly in black, which I am over the moon about. Finally, a simple, black swing dress! I imagine myself wearing it all the time – you do not know how  often I search through my closet for a simple black swing dress, always to be reminded that I do not have one! Kristen is wearing it below and doesn’t it just look amazing on her?

_DSC4471e

Heart of Haute is known for its classic 50’s & 60s silhouettes and patterns, which are very wearable. Everything they make is in cotton and made in the USA, which means they are built to last.

The amazing Hello June Photography was pumped to get to shoot at The Junque Cellar, where we were able to use the pieces they have for sale as props, to give this shot a great 60’s feel.

You can get all of the dresses seen above at Rowena in Edmonton or at RetroGlam.com.

I’ve had a look at the the new spring collection from Heart of Haute and there are some great patterns coming! Florals are back again, but there are some great 60’s cuts and tropical prints too. This upcoming spring/summer season seems to be promisising for a lot of the brands Rowena carries – looks like Im going to have to get a 2nd job 😉

Dont forget to follow Hello June Photography to take advantage of contests she runs or find out how to book a session.

And follow The Junque Cellar too, especially if you are like me and like to be teased by amazing vintage house wares!

why shopping local matters

As I grow older, I think more consciously about my purchases- do i really need this? can I afford it? is it cruelty- free? is is organic or natural? could i find this somewhere local? I live in a bustling neighborhood- the hot spot of the city, if you will. Because of my locale it makes it easier to buy local and support independent business. Almost every thing  I need I can find in my community.

LOCO_Buy-Local_Infographic1-e1368214478188

There are three groceries stores in a 10 block radius- two of them being organic. I buy the majority of my clothing at the store I work at, which is an independently owned and run shop. I buy all my toiletries at the pharmacy in my neighborhood. I go to the yoga studio and gym near by. I buy all my book at the book stores a few blocks away or go to the library literally 2 blocks from my apartment. You get the idea.

When I see something in the mall I know I could also get at an independent retailer, I will usually wait to buy it. While I do occasionally shop at box stores, I prefer not to. Sometimes it will cost more to shop at a small business, but think about how your money is helping them and the neighborhood they are in thrive. Shopping local helps build the community, creates jobs, fuels the economy, and keeps small businesses open. When I buy produce at the Farmers Market I am giving my money to a person and not a corporation, I am helping to ensure they can keep growing the vegetables they do, I am eating seasonally ( which is so good for our bodies), I know I am buying quality products, and I supporting the endeavors of others in my community.

abe05290652e90c79e4ad716f8d67277As I mentioned, I work at a small, independent store, which sells rockabilly, pin-up, and vintage reproduction. I have heard many times, customers say they just want to try an item on so they can go buy it online or they saw it cheaper on line, so they refuse to buy it at the store. Blank stare. You’re kidding right? When people shop online they are NOT supporting their own community and in the long run, they are contributing to putting independent companies out of business. Yah, sometimes you can find something cheaper on line, but after the shipping and the possible duties, you don’t save much. Not only is it important to shop local, but if you do shop online, shop Canadian.

keep-it-local-logo-conceptsI can’t say I shop local 100% of the time or I buy from Canadian websites all of the time, but I do make the effort to do so. I think we all should. Why wouldn’t you want to support your own economy- the one you are directly effected by. I know that money sometimes is the issue…it is cheaper to shop at Walmart or a big box store than a small grocer or independent pet store, etc. Do some comparison shopping, sign up for newsletters, watch for sales, and get a ‘reward’ card.

I plan to compile a more complete list of Canadian companies and local, for Edmonton, companies, but here is a small start:

Barefoot Venus- made in Kelowna, British Columbia

Rowena and Retroglam.com– Edmonton, Alberta

Wild Prairie Natural Skin Care– Canadian made natural soap and other body care

Lux Beauty Bar–  boutique selling cosmetics and other beauty products in Edmonton, AB

Keep an eye out for a more complete list and feel free to comment with some Canadian companies you love!

The Heidi from Pinup Girl Clothing

Despite selling tons of Heidi’s at work, because of their ability to be so versatile and flattering on so many body types, I only just  bought my second one the other day. The Heidi, by Pinup Girl Clothing, should be a staple in every gals wardrobe- they come in a ton of different colors and patterns and can easily be worn to a wedding or a night out with the ladies.

Pinup Girl recently changed the leopard print pattern/fabric they use. I am in love with the new leopard and it is the reason I bought it.

heidi 008

It fit me perfectly and made me feel so pretty! Why did I wait so long to to get another one?! I’ve already picked out which Heidi I will be getting next- the new spider web print.

I wore this Heidi specifically for a lovely date I was going on with my boyfriend. We went to PackRat Louie, a fantastic high end restaurant just a few blocks from our place. They have super yummy martinis, including a tiramisu one, which was divine! They also had vegetarian options, which can be hard to find at fine dining. The atmosphere was romantic and sweet, with exposed brick walls and ambient lighting. Once we were done our meals the desert menu was hand stamped onto the brown paper that lined the table , which I thought was quite fun.

heidi 003heidi 006I wore a gorgeous Sweet Romance necklace, as well, that I have yet to have occasion to wear. It was a perfect match.

heidi 009

I got both my Heidi and Sweet Romance necklace at Rowena.

Don’t forget to check out RetroGlam.com if you don’t live in town!

And if you’re looking for somewhere nice, with delicious food and a great atmosphere for a date, a gals night out, or a special occasion, check out PackRat Louie
